I don't think this joke makes fun of Catholics or the Pope. It makes fun of two things, IMO... 1.) The fact that his clothing looks like Santas clothes and 2.) George W. Bush isn't the smartest man.
Mainly... I see it as making fun of Bush.
You have to have humor in this life. I laugh at myself often. I try not to take things too seriously.

Bad taste is just that, bad taste.

Sometimes when I laugh at something, other people think it's awful, but my type of humor is usually from a "don't analyze, judge or think about social repercussions, right/wrong, moral/immoral, etc." viewpoint. Once I start to do all those things, I can see that yeah, maybe there is a more reverent core in the subject matter.
I must admit that my instant reaction to citizen's post was to laugh out loud. After that, I read the other reactions and I can fully understand why most people probably would not think it's funny.
We could get into a long, drawn-out discussion of the Pope and all he meant to the world, and it could then get political as we explore President Bush, but really, that red outfit did look sorta Santa-ish. I didn't feel it was a slam on anybody -- just like I don't think that blonde jokes are taken as serious attacks on real blonde women, and all those "yo momma" jokes aren't really meant as attacks on or disrespect of mothers.
One time I laughed during a Beavis and Butthead movie in Fresno and people turned around and glared at me. It was during a scene where the hippie teacher was playing his guitar and singing, "Lesbian Seagull" and the bird was blasted into a puff of feathers. I couldn't believe that people who would go see a B & B movie would take that scene so seriously and feel sad! Geez!
But like I said, I can see both sides here.

I'm not Catholic but I still feel this "joke" was in bad taste, IMHO.

My aunt got that as a Christmas Card this year. I laughed when she showed it to me at her house in San Francisco a few weeks ago.

It is a good put down of Bush. I do not think it denigrates Pope John Paul II.
