I can't comment on the Oakhurst Castillos which I think is run by the kids, however, I love the Bass Lake Castillos. The food and service is great. The only shame is, due to local politics, Castillos is still fighting for a liquor license. Unfortunately you can't enjoy a nice margurita with your enchiladas. Strange since the local bar is about 100 yards away. I'd love to hear the rational for denying the license.

isn't there a law about the number of places that can sell alchohol in a certain area?

i seem to remember hearing that as the reason given for the lack of liquor license

I've heard that it was the Bass Lake homeowners Assoc that has refused them the liquor license. I could understand it if Castillo's was just a bar, but with the main focus on the food, and the length of the owners having a business in the mountains, it seems silly to me.
I've eaten there a couple of times and both the food and service were good, but would have been better if I could have gotten a Tecate!

Castillos in Bass Lake is great! They have a liquor license now. The mother of the family owns this one. I heard they sold the Oakhurst location this month.

Where exactly is Castillo's at Bass Lake?

I moved the comments about the Oakhurst Castillos to the topic for that location. It is true that the Oakhurst location is no longer owned by the family. The kids sold it this month.

I have went to Castillos at Bass Lake a lot lately and always get great service.

YEAH!! I can have my margarita with my chips & salsa!!

(Before I get too excited...is it a full liquor licence, or just beer/wine???)

No Wine Margarita's for me its gotta be the real thing http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/yes.gif so hopefully its a full license

Its next to Ditton Realty, on the side of the so called antique place.. I forget the name, but its across from Good Ole Days.

Yes... they server Margaritas, so it must be the full license. Please also remember that Tina is open in the winter and relies on locals to keep her open. Please support this new Bass Lake restaurant all year.

They are located near the Pines... near Beaver St.. From the Pines, drive on the low road towards The Falls and you'll see a redish building on the right side.

BTW: Tell Tina you read her reviews on Oakhurst Online! She asks me what people are saying every time I go in there. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/wink2.gif

Oh goodie!! We were there last year just after Labor Day, and the food was great, service was great (well, no one else was there! They were going to close, but we came with a group of 12), but missing the margarita!

Going up in about 9 days (not that I'm counting) so I'm sure we make it there at least once!

Hi all!

Well, We were up at the lake last week, planning on going to Castillos, but alas, they couldn't take our size group (23)...or rather they wouldn't take a reservation (and we weren't going to take a chance waiting). Oh well, I understand though, the place isn't really that big to begin with. Maybe over Labor Day!

Why are the comments about Castillos at Bass Lake so old. The food is fantastic since Efran and his wife bought it over from Tina.

Real authentic mexican food and the prices are great too.

Gotta try it.

We went in there one time. The service was really good and the food was yummy. The only issue that I had is that it was pretty pricey. We stick with El Cid's.

Castillos is good, but would much rather head over to La Cabana in North Fork.

After driving around looking at houses today we decided to eat out. Since it seems obscene to eat at El Cid every weekend we decided to try something new. So, this was our first time at Castillo's in Bass Lake. We got up and walked out due to awful service, which I've never done before. After twenty minutes of sitting down waiting in vain for our DRINK order to be taken, we decided not to see how long we would have to wait for our food. Off we went to El Cid after all, where we enjoyed the food, service, and wonderful new restrooms.

Casa Castillios at the lake seems to be changing to Casa Valescos, the actual owners name. My wife and I have gone there for lunch many times and always have enjoyed their food. It is our favorite mexican food on the mountain. One of the waitresses can be a little cold at lunch hour and we have taken that in stride and laughed it off, but the food is always consistantly good. If you get anyone other than the grumpy person waiting on you the service is great. I need to mention the grumpy one to the owner as I would be doing a dis-service not to say anything since it is obviously hurting their business given the last post...
If you are up for it, give it another try and I am sure you won't be let down by the food or the service if you are there when the owner (Yolanda) is around!

That's one thing that I have always hated...if I have a bad experience the first time it's not likely that I'll be returning to test the waters again.

They are the same restaurant, with the same good food, and a great selection of foriegn and domestic beer. I don't know about liquor. The name is now Casa Velasco. Castillos was the name when they bought it, but it is not their name. I like the food and the people at Casa Velasco, and I eat there often.

Wow, so glad to hear that. I like Mexican food and have passed back and forth so many days lately, wondering if that place was good or just a "clip joint" aka "tourist trap." Can't wait to go in, thanks for the info.

I have their fish tacos often. It is my FAVORITE on their menu! They use cod, or sometimes tilapia and they sear the tiny pieces brown and serve them traditional style on double corn tortillas with finely chopped cabbage and onion and cilantro. Their salsa is very good too. I usually have a Modelo Negro beer with them.

You made me so hungry for fish tacos that my husband and daughter and I went there for lunch today. The service was so good, our waitress came back several times to check on us and was very efficient and pleasant. Two of us had the fish tacos and we talked about them all the way back to our daughters apartment, now my husband wants to go back soon because he feels as if he missed out. He had the chicken bowl which he really enjoyed but we really LOVED our fish tacos. One thing that was different than the ones we had in Mexico is that they serve them with lemon wedges, I asked for lime and it was at the table in about 2 seconds. We also liked the Castillo's in Oakhurst. They catered my 60th birthday party here at the house and did a wonderful job. I understand that they are out of business because of a disputes over the condition of the flooring in the kitchen, not because their food was not good.

You are exactly right. I have known Mike for years, and they were doing ok until th building began to sink. You could see the earth between the gap in the floors wher it was sinking. Madera County closed them down because of it. The repairs were too costly and they decided to hang it up. I'm glad you had a good time at Casa Velasco. Yolanda and Efrain will be happy that they made a new friend.

We are hoping that Mike is reopening it, we really like their food and service. Not only in the restaurant but their catering is outstanding. They do a beautiful job.

Being that he liquidated EVERYTHING in that resturant, I find it hard to believe he would repurchase all the tables, the entire kitchen contents etc to open again.
Not to mention, the place was a ghost town, before he first took over from the previous owner, we would eat there at least once a week, after the takeover, the service was terrible, and wait times were so huge we stopped going, so did the rest of the community it seems... kind of like Katies!
My wife and I were bummed, two of our favorite places were trashed by new owners.

I'm a little confused... Will someone clarify this a bit for me? It's been so long since I've been to either Castillos locations -- Oakhurst or Bass Lake. From what I'm reading, I understand Castillos' Oakhurst restaurant is closed, but potentially reopening as Casa Vallarta, correct? The Castillos Bass Lake restaurant IS still in operation or is it also closed? Casa Vallarta, I thought, was in Oakhurst. In the shopping center that is sandwiched between the Best Value Inn and Taqueria (where The Three Sisters restaurant was originally). But someone referred to it as the Bass Lake Casa Vallarta... do they have two locations? Argh. I really need to get off this property and drive into town more often.

When the owner of the Bass Lake Castillos purchased Tina's share of the business he changed the name to Casa Vallarta and now they are saying he wants to open another in the old Oakhurst Castillo's location. I hope he doesn't change anything...I love his food and hope he remains in Bass Lake and small because expansion sometimes wreaks havoc on small businesses.
Case in point is Tina's original Castillo's at the old caboose.......it was sooooooo much better when SHE could supervise it properly. After she built the big one behind Ditton's.....it was still good but there were far more variables to deal with and it was not as personal which I think made a great deal of difference.

Casa Velasco is the old Casa Castillo's in Bass Lake. Casa Vallarta is across from Vons shopping center on 41. The owner of Casa Velasco is opening up old Oakhurst Castillo's. He is Tina's family member, (brother in law or something???) You almost had it right, people just had the names mixed up. Velasco, Vallarta

More Mexican food rolleyes:

We need Indian Food, Thai Food, anything as long as its new. Too many Mexican Restaurants and Pizza joints in this town.

I must say, however, I enjoy going to the Bass Lake Velsaco's restaurant when I'm in that area. The food and service are always good.
