View Full Version : Live Footage of Eagle Hatchings

I don't know if any of you have been following this event on the Eagle in Canada. She has two eggs that were supposed to be hatched on 4/26 but no baby eagles yet! It's fascinating. Occasionally her mate will take over and lay on the eggs. There are two eggs and as of today there is a hole in each egg (you can see when she gets up to change positions). Go to link below:

I'm amazed at how sturdy their nest is. It's really windy right now and it doesn't even appear to move even though the branches of the tree are moving like crazy.

I open it and leave it running on my computer and then when I hear them doing a lot of chatting I'll come back to watch and see what's going on. When they are really animated it seems they're calling to each other and you can actually hear the one who's away from the nest call back and then when they fly into the nest it's awesome.

It took awhile for the mom to move, but she finally did and I could see the new eaglet! She is rearranging some of the nesting material now. If you click on the screen a new window will open that shows the video window again, along with a chat window to the left, with comments going on live time among watchers. They will also post "seek-points" of specific events of interest that are recorded.
This is the url for the recording of the hatching this morning:
http://www.zaplive.tv/web/hornby-island2?streamId=hornby-island2%2F2009%2F04%2F27%2F2009-04-27-07-48_hornby-island2.flv&start=167
Also, if you go to that url, there are other 'seekpoints' of significant events that are posted which you can click on.
This live cam is just amazing - very fascinating. I've checked in every now and then to watch - often you can hear chainsaws going in the area - maybe the folks in the house that is visible doing work!
A big thanks to the person that originally posted the url for us!

DANG it!! I was watching all weekend to see if they were still eggs or Eaglets and then I read your post. I could see mom's really tidying the nest and I think I saw one Bald little head but she won't get off enough for me to see!! I think there are two  That is just awesome!! Will watch from work so I can see better maybe later when she gets off of them for a bit...feeding time should be really exciting!! Thanks for posting lazywolf!!

Screen Porch Girl,
I'm glad you posted the link you did, its showing the recorded version from earlier with both of the parents and the eggs being visible with the hatchling! Very cool, since I wasnt able to watch it earlier!
The real time recording (directly at Hornby) is only showing one parent on the nest...keeping things and babys all "covered" up~! ......lol ~
I also swear they *know* when I'm watching....:D HA!
When you reach the end of the recording and if you want to watch the eagles live, you can go here ~ :)

Finally got to see the baby Chick...there is only 1 and 1 egg is still unhatched. I think they lay the eggs a week apart so maybe in a week or so Chick #2 will make an appearance.
Here are the links. The first one is a wide angle view. The second one is a close up of the nest.
What a cutie pie and mom caught something earlier and it's in the next too. She'll pick pieces off of it to feed the baby who reminds me of a "Weebles Wobble but they don't fall down".

Sometimes the links for some reason are on "recorded video". When that happens I'm guessing they are changing the tapes or something. So I just try back later and I'm able to get the live feed. I'm watching live right now and daddy just flew in.

"Weebles Wobble but they don't fall down".
Absolutely perfect :D
And let's hope it doesn't fall down - that first step is quite a doozy!
This link is to a recorded view that shows the baby really well - from 2:14 yesterday 4/27:
http://www.zaplive.tv/web/hornby-island2?streamId=hornby-island2%2F2009%2F04%2F27%2F2009-04-27-14-14_hornby-island2.flv&start=375
This link is a recorded view (from 7:28 this morning) that show the baby being fed by Mom - apparently Dad brought a fish to the nest yesterday, and it will stay in the nest quite a while, and they feed the baby from it. It looks like viewers that are chatting while they watch have named the eaglet Hope.
http://www.zaplive.tv/web/hornby-island2?streamId=hornby-island2%2F2009%2F04%2F28%2F2009-04-28-07-28_hornby-island2.flv&start=0

Re: getting back to the live shot - I have these two urls saved in my Favorites of my browser -
This is the wide angle view:
http://www.hancockwildlifechannel.org/staticpages/index.php/20080302140549584
This is the close-up view:
http://www.hancockwildlifechannel.org/staticpages/index.php/20080401010059972
I start by clicking on one of them (usually the close-up) and once I am watching the closeup, I click on the video screen and a new browser window opens up that has the live cam window again, and another window next to it of conversation by chatters that are watching. If you scroll down on the page you will see a big list of "seekpoints" that are recorded views that have been captured, and are named as to what is shown in the recording. When you are done watching a recording, your previous window of the live view is still there, waiting for you.
Hope this helps!
Now, I'm shutting down- really I am - and getting some work done.
oh well, maybe not- I'll skim thru the rest of the new posts in the forums first.
THEN I'm working.

2nd Eaglette was hatched today about 1:48pm. They named the 2nd one Echo and the 1st one is Hope. Hope has not been very nice to her/his new sibling thus far...think he/she is jealous
The Wide Angle came is down until the Eaglettes start moving around the nest more but you can still view the close up cam. Something about not enough bandwidth to run both right now.

Welcome Only1 I was able to see mom move off the nest after I posted and got a "birds-eye" view of both Eaglettes!! I also got to see Hope beat up on Echo...bad little Eagle!! They both ate well although Echo is a Wobbly little Weeble and has a really hard time staying up right long enough to get a morsel. He exhausts himself working so hard. Can't wait to see them as they grow. This is truely, at least for me the most facinating thing I've seen in ages!

Lazywolf...I was wondering the same thing but I have to remind myself that Hope is a full week older than Echo. I watched the feeding to night to and it seemed that Echo got the majority of the food. I think s/he will be fine but yes it freaks me out that s/he's so tiny and doesn't seem to have much strength. I went to the forum and read the posts and it doesn't seem that anyone else is concerned. Since this is my first time watching something like this I'm sure that those on the Eagle forum are more used to what they see and that could be why they don't seem concerned...at least I hope so

Thanks for the update. I know, sometimes I can't even watch and have to turn the sound off so I don't hear them screaming. Sometimes Hope just grabs Echo and shakes him and he (she) just lays there and I just can't watch anymore. I am overly sensitive when it comes to animals. Thanks for the response.

Again this year we face the scientific and emotional tugs about how to handle a perceived difficulty in our favorite birds. As with all raptors sibling rivalry again raises its ugly head -- sometimes more grossly apparent than at others.

All of a sudden a fish started jumping around under Pa and then a fish...the one Ma had been feeding to the younguns started jumping around. Two fishes for lunch!! What a nice way to start the afternoon. What a tragic day at the Hornby nest. As Lazywolf mentioned this morning little Echo some how got stuck to mom's leg. From what I've read they at this point have no explaination as to how or with what little Echo got stuck. This all started about 7am. Around 930am or so mom flew of with Echo still attached and via the video I clearly saw Echo fall off. At that point I don't know if she/he was still alive or not. Doug Carrick, who lives just below this Eagle came was aware of the happenings and went out in search of Echo. This is what he posted to the site....
Doug Carrick wrote:
IN MEMORY OF LITTLE "ECHO"
At 10:30 this morning I looked under the eagle tree and found Echo lying on the ground. I picked him up. He was soft and warm but absolutely still - no signs of life.
Just when we realized that Echo was managing very well in dealing with his big sister and was getting his share of the food, this totally unexpected tragedy occurred.
We are all upset. It reminds us how tenuous life is, especially in the wild. We will miss little Echo but still have Hope.

I so understand your feelings Browser. I just can't bare to look at the nest right now either. I was so cheering for little Echo who was so tiny and frail and was just beginning to hold his own and make sure he wasn't left out at meal time. He had my heart!! This was a post I found from yesterday, offering up a "possible" explanation for what could have caused this, but they really arent sure, even after reviewing the video footage over and over again.
From the Hornby forum-
"Hi all :
What a sad day. Our followers and Doug have really said it all. The few calls I have just had were tear laced and provoked the same in me. Sure hard -- bloody impossible actually -- to be an un-compassionate and objective scientist under these circumstances.
This is of course a very unusual accident. In fact this is such an unusual twist of fate that I have never heard of it happening just like this before. Here where we have so many viewers, such good opportunity for observation and analysis by replaying the archival cams, and yet no clear answers.
How in fact did this accident occur? In the past there are examples of adults bringing string (binder twine left in the fields kills hundreds of raptors annually this way), small fish net pieces attached to a fish entangle the young, and there is even suspicion of a broken egg in the nest acting as a binder or glue to fix feathers to chicks and cause a similar tragedy. But none of this seems to be at play here. So what is a logical explanation?
My best guess at this point or suspicion is that either chick excavated (pooped!) while it was under mom. This excrement stuck her underbelly and possibly underwing covets -- a few long trailing feathers -- together and poor Echo had the misfortune of getting entangled in them.
Certainly the excrement can be a strong binding agent. I have seen captive reared chicks stuck firmly to the nest with excrement. However, to have seen her fly off with the chick and then return safely with the chick still attached seemed a miracle in the making. The downside was of course that the timing for the chick or mom still did not permit the separation.
Life in the wild is not easy and we are constantly reminded in our viewing opportunities of this. The miracle seems more that some survive. I hope for some heavy rains so mom gets her belly feathers cleaned.
Maybe others examining the footage will detect something I have missed in my quick replay and we will have a slightly more complete explanation.
Best regards
David"

That is exactly what my theory was as to how Echo got stuck. It had to be some excretion that stuck Echo to the caregiver at that time. It's sad because Echo was doing so well and got our hopes up so high and then this freakish thing happen right before our eyes. Hope this doesn't discourage you Boo Boo bear and browser to not watch this marvelous thing that we are so fortunate to be able to watch. Believe me if something happens to Hope and he falls out of the nest, that Doug Carrick will be there to help the situation. I guess this nest has been on his property for 14 years. He will be there to help.

LITTLE ECHO'S FINAL RESTING PLACE
At 12:30 today I buried our little Echo. He is now, and always will be, in a beautiful corner of our garden. A "forest flame" shrub is on one side of him and a scented azalea on the other side. He is surrounded by blue bells, hyacinth and bleeding hearts. A deep red rose and a white rose grow up the fence behind him.
The beach can be seen from here, the deep blue water and the distant mountains - lovely surroundings for our lovely little eaglet. He is now resting in peace.

Just read that Hope pooped on the camera lens. That's why it is fuzzy. Wonder how they are going to clean it. LOL !!!

I hadn't visited this site in a long time...since Echo's untimely passing. I went today to check things out and my goodness...how big Hope has gotten. Here's the link again if you want to take a look...
