I just picked up DSL equipment to put on our home computer and I am having problems. I have a Dell 2400 has anyone else had problems installing their DSL? My daughter called STI Technical support and they said when we plug in the red connection cable something else should come up and it's not. My daughter called Dell Support and they want $99 for a phone call. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Something else should come up? Did they give you anything more specific than that? That can mean all sorts of things. My first guess would be a firewall issue or a virus that prevents you from getting an IP, but more specific info is needed to accurately diagnose the issue. STI should be able to help you.

Thanks Sandman, I believe it is a firewall of some sort so after work I will be once again trying to get it right. It's something that needs to be enabled I believe.

You need to go to the hardware manager and check to make sure you network adapter is enabled.
From the start button button go to control panel. Dbl click on system click on hardware tab dbl click device manager check to see that the network adapter is enabled

Steve says to call tech support again if you still have problems. PM me if that doesn't work out and we'll see if there's any other help he can give you. (He may have been at the desk when you picked up your modem.)

When I got my DSL, a tech came to the house and delivered my equipment, phone filters and checked the phone lines. He then handed me the box with DSL router in it and smiled and went on his merry way. (If I wanted the guy to install the router, woulda cost me 99dollars). I just followed the written directions in the box and voila. But my point is: Make sure you change the puter's connection from dialup to LAN setting. (find this in the control panal under Network connections.)
