I read what people say, then check it out for myself. Sometimes a prior headsup about a problem is helpful. If several people have had problems, it can sure raise red flags, but then you have to look at the nature of complaints also. I also pay attention to whether or not the person does nothing but complain, or if they ever say anything positive about stuff on here also. So I would have to have a "sometimes" category in order to vote.

I didn't vote because noneof the choices reflect my opinion. I believe some but not all of the claims.

I agree that each post has its own level of validity. For the most part, yes I think about everyones opinions here before I go to a local business. However, some posts just seem more like an angry employee or something. I try to disregard those. There are some people here that I really value their opinion, some... not so much.

i grew up in north fork and learned quickly that the best way to get something done is by word of mouth.
if i'm looking for an oil change, dentist, diner, or whatever, i always ask around first.
i just use what i call "open-minded skepticism" - or take what others say with a grain of salt.
has generally worked well for me.

I tend to ignore reviews from people that know the owners of the business http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/wink2.gif
I HATE it when an owner/employee/friend posts a bad review on competition and a good review on their business. IMO: This looks bad on the business they are trying to promote.
And yes, you can easily tell when someone is/knows the owner.

By coming in here a lot, I've got to recognize who always seems negative and who seems rational - from there I can take advice or leave it...
Just one bad experience doesn't mean a business is always bad... but multiple bad reviews makes me start to wonder.
