View Full Version : barking dogs in the night

What can be done about dogs who bark continously, and loudly, all night long? How can the owners or the neighbors stand the all-night barking? Will Madero Co animal control respond? We have CC&Rs, but no HOA.
We're moving to the mts. for the peace and quiet we anticipated. The problem dog seems to be at least 1/2 mile away. We haven't had time to try to track him (and his owner) down.

I would try the Owner first if possible. Sometimes they are just so used to the noise they are oblivious to it. I'm sure if it is a problem with you, then other Neighbors are probably feeling the same way.
The Sherrif's Dept. will be able to tell you what ordinance/violation it is and how to procede further.

bark collars work great. I put one on my young dog.. and he no longer barks.... Madera Co. doesnt do CRAP except ticket dogs for cruising without an owner and leash.

First off the key word is the Mt. Not the city if you can't stand a barking dog then don't move here. Many people have other critters and the dogs keep coyotes and other animals away that would kill them and there also so good for keeping the crack heads away that break in to houses. This is the COUNTRY not the CITY.

It's this attitude that has people finding their pets poisoned or shot.

Try living next door to a beagle...it's not even a bark, it's almost like an annoying horn or a honking walrus going off constantly.
Well, I'm happy. The beagle moved. But there is a beagle several houses down who I can hear when I'm outside at night...boy I feel bad for his neighbors. What I did to drown out the beagle when I had to was a fan in my room to give me that white noise. It's another noise...but it's easier to sleep to.
I don't technically live in the "country"...I live in a neighborhood where homes are pretty close together...this is close to city living. Beagles don't bark at just intruders. They bark at everything. Even the wind. I would hate to live next to a dog that barks all night long...or at the crack of dawn when his owners let him outside. I hate losing sleep from a dog!

In the city, in the country - we've always heard neighbor's barking dogs... thankfully here in the country we have more room between us - but sound carries here - sometimes we can even hear our neighbors at what would be at least a block and a half away talking (at their normal talking voices) when they are out on their back patio.
I hate barking dogs too... but the sound of coyotes yipping and howling, frogs croaking, crickets chirping, woodpeckers pecking, quail chattering, bats, skunks scratching at the door, bears walking on your deck using your hottub at all hours of the night, ok not the last one, etc. are the sounds we hear more frequently -
And why shouldn't we - We move HERE... they didn't move to my old city neighborhood - its what we expected.

Y'all sure it isn't coyote's that your hearing?
In any case the dog is probably lonely and wants some attention... http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/tongue.gif

Dogs barking are annoying. But worse yet are neighbors who have really noisy vehicles and rev the engines up and down the hills at all hours of the day and night.
I would love to have a barking dog instead of teenage boys living next door. Trade?

My dog barks when there is something to bark at. There is a bear in Teaford and I always know when he is around. Kato goes crazy! I am happy that he warns me. Thats one of the reasons I got a dog. But I agree that it can be annoying when a dog barks all day and night. I'm thankful that my dog isn;t a big barker.

There is a barking curfew believe it or not. Don't bother calling the sheriffs they will tell you to call animal control.
The curfew is 10:00 at night to 7:00 in the am.
you have to call animal control and complain.. like once a week. then they come out and let the owner know there dog is barking. if i was you don't go to the owners yourself. they can get you for harrassment. so do it all thru animal control.
been there done it and has to go thru it...
so if you want it done right keep calling animal control and complain about the barking dog.....

OMG! That is the worst! Our neighbor brought home a donkey to breed with his horses - he was there about 2 months - It was so freaking loud and long brays!
My other neighbor has cattle. The other a tractor he loves to get out on and just move dirt around. The other a Harley...
Buy - HAY - yes HAY (not hey) - Its the country - I expect some animals around people who have property. I have 2 horses and they nicker and chatter sometimes too.

This year the flea problem (for just about everybody I understand - the hardware store and feed store are always out of flea control products) has been so bad I had to put my dogs outside over a month ago for their protection from chemicals due to bombing my house and they bark, sometimes waking me and I sleep sound and don't hear so well. But wouldn't you know - for the FIRST time since moving here and trying to grow something lovely and green - the deer haven't buzzed it all down by this time!?!?! Last night I made it a point, conciously telling myself upon going to bed, to get up and shush 'em instead of just rolling over to put my 'good' ear in the pillow. I think you might be new in my neighborhood Lookout Lee, and I apologize and will try hard to get my boys to quiet down. But it sure is nice to have roses, etc actually blooming...

Somehow you get used to whatever noise is around, like I got used to a train across the street from me when I lived in the valley. The ONLY think I can't get used to is that loud "bumping" music. Just drives me right over the edge when I hear that. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/rolleyes2.gif

Well out here I find the dog’s only seam to bark when strangers are around, coyotes, or stray dogs ect. are around. My two dogs let me know when some thing or one is around the place and for that I am glad. But that is why I have them for watch dogs cause they bark. They bark Loud and deep so if I am not home I would hope they would scare any one or thing off. With the closest home over a mile away, the dogs keep the home stead safe when were gone.

Try Frontline. You can get it from your Vet.
My dog never has fleas, and ticks fall off dead within 24 hours.
If anyone can't afford it, They shouldn't own a dog.

I don't think he's being sarcastic. Are you John? No? Didn't think so. I hate to say it, but I agree. I also think that if you can't afford to castrate your dog you shouldn't have one.
My dog uses Frontline, I tried all the other OTC kinds that you can buy at Petsmart and crappy stores like that, but they don't work and they stink of chemicals. One of the brands I used made his hair turn grey (he's golden retriever) down his back and on the back of his neck). Frontline works, and it doesn't smell like a chemist project. Plus they give you a sticker thing to put up so you remember to give your dog his dose.
John, go back to being sarcastic, because the last couple posts have been too serious and we cannot have that.

I use Sevendust. My bordercollie is fixed but my lab isn't.
So that means I'm not aloud to have a dog. C'mon pleeaaase. I've had dogs all my life. And they've all died of old age.
My lab isn't fixed for a reason and I don't need to use frontline. I'm happy with sevendust.
And my dogs are healty too.

http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif My dogs have a curfew!! LOL In by 10 pm during the week and 11 pm on the weekends. I am being serious though.
Their 'bark zone' includes the Fresno River. If I didn't bring them in at night they would bark themselves stupid trying to bark away every critter great and small that visits the river for food or water each night.
Whether this is true or not...I also happen to believe that dogs that don't live in the house as well as out side of the house don't quite grasp the idea of protecting the house from the inside. (Meaning me) I like that one sleeps blocking easy access to me and the other sleeps blocking the bedroom door.
As far as Frontline goes. This year for what ever reason; the long wet winter maybe; has been the first year in ten that my dogs have had a flea issue at all. I bought the Frontline @ $50 for 3 mos. Now, add to that the cost of heartworm pills, and other preventative maintainence such as rabies shots; consider my two knot-heads are getting 'up there' and are now requiring a bit more to keep them happy and healthy like a more expensive but healthier for them kibble, and benign odd growing lumps removed from time to time...and well, the price of the Frontline was too me, a bit extreme.
I was more than happy to get it for them as watching them try and chew their tails off was sad, sad, sad. But, I can see where some folks might have a hard time justifying the cost. I am just thankful flea season falls in the middle of my 'work season'.
Anyways...back to barking non-stop, and all night long. I think those are the dogs that have been plopped outback and hardly ever seen or played with again. I was real happy when that neighbor moved away!
On and off barking through out the night to chase off the big bad scary things...I like those dogs. I can tell just by how the neighborhood dogs sound off if there is an unfamiliar critter roaming around outside, or just deer or raccoons getting into mischief etc.. I can even tell which direction the critter is traveling. Yep...like the dogs that bark for a reason!

Hello,
This is Spanky. Spanky is not like other dog's, He does not get to go to the fancy dog training school, he does not get to eat left over steak table scraps, he gets teased by the other dogs who pass by wearing custom made sweaters, he does not have Frontline flea protection. But what lucky does have is a loving owner and a life long companion who was willing to take him in and care for him to to the best of their abilities.
For just 25 cents a day you can help support dogs like Spanky and save them from being put to sleep.
You don't have to be rich to save a life of a pet.
There are some homeless people that have pets that they take care of like their own child. Sometimes that dog is their only friend that they have and can trust.

Never ceases to amaze me the amount of elitism that goes on...
People have had pets for thousands of years before the *miracle* of frontline...
People either will, or won't, take the responsibility to raise their animals in their care.
If you CAN afford it then I'd say use it, if you can't find something else...
The only people I think who SHOULD NOT have pets are those who don't care to do anything but abuse, exploit, or neglect the animal.

castrate is what you do to your husband when you find him cheating on you..
you fix and dog or cat... gosh!!!!!!!!!
my dogs are not fixed and choose not to do that to them. that is my choice but I take good care of them.
To tell someone not to own a dog is like telling them not to have kids if you can't afford it.. well if we all waiting to afford it then we wouldn't have anything in life...
plus this topic is about barking dogs.... so lets stay on the subject shall we.!!!! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/tongue.gif

my thoughts exactly mtn eagle! We tried to buy a so called yellow lab from this guy off of our hospital computer bulletin board... first he brought out a way under fed post puppy female.. then he brought out a gimpy male .. both of whom were majorly underfed and prolly underloved dogs. I mean, if ya wanna give em away thats cool. but to charge 100bucks.. geez! If you dont want the dogs or believe them to be too much of a bother.. GIVE THEM AWAY! Dogs werent born to make you money!
and if anyone knows of an adult male Malamute they want to sell or give away.. let me know. I want one.

Very true. When I was younger, I didn't understand why homeless people would often have a dog. If they can't afford a home and food for themselves, why have a dog? But after living in Berkeley and becoming friends with the many different kinds of people there, I changed my opinions. I learned that many of these people put the dog before themselves. The dogs would get fed before they fed themselves. They put buying dog food before buying beer. Some of the best, most behaved and healthiest dogs I know live on the street. They are active, around a lot of people and get a lot of love. I know this doesn't go for everyone, but this is what I learned from my experiences. I know this is off topic kinda... but I wanted to throw in my two cents. You can't really say general comments like "Only people that can afford Advantage or Frontline should own a dog". What is the better scenerio here...
1.) A homless person has a dog he calls his best friend. They roam the streets together in the day time and keep eachother warm at night. The man always makes sure his dog eats, but can't afford the expensive food nor can he afford Frontline... so, he uses alternative (less expensive) medications to keep the fleas away. Call him a hippie, but this man wouldn't put the chemicals on his dog anyway... he likes to use natural solutions when possible.
2.) A financialy secure man owns a dog and buys this dog the best food, Frontline flea medication and a top of the line dog run. This man is so involved with his work, however, that he didn't have time to train the dog and the dog rarely leaves the cage he was put in.... but he doesn't have fleas!
I have a feeling that the first dog is a much happier dog. So before you make generalizations like "only people that can afford Frontline should be able to have a dog", just remember that money is not always the better thing. Would the dog be better off put to sleep or caged? I think not.
Saying only rich people should own a pet makes me sick. We would have way more stray dogs if that was the case. If I was a dog, I'd much rather live with the homeless guy that didn't buy me Frontline.

Guess when I had more than enough $$ I shoulda realized that someday taking care of my pound puppies might be hard, and not saved them from certain death.
Maybe there's a service for us people who have hit a bump in the road and will come out and 'take care' of the problem for us... since we don't deserve to have them anyway...

Hmmmmm, barking dogs in the night - looks like there might be a lot of that tonight - the Moon looks pretty full, or close to it. I actually just became accustomed to barking dogs. When I lived in SoCal there was a train that went right by our boulevard and I never thought twice about it. Now, when I go to visit the train seems incredibly loud and irritating. I think its all what you get used to.

We have 3 dogs. They only bark when critters come around or people are walking along our fence. We try, try and continue to try to break them of this and they were getting better. Now our neighbor has taken to the habit of yelling at them to "Shut Up". This, of course, eggs the dogs on and has made the whole problem worse. The other night we had deer across the street. Dogs went nuts. We were outside trying to wrangle them up and what happens? The neighbor that yells at them was once again outside, yelling at the dogs. Telling me that their "occasional" barking ruins the quiet nature up here. Hahaha, this is coming from the man that uses a BB gun to shoot the deer out of his garden.
Oh well. I don't know whether to keep working with them to curb their barking, or let them bark their heads off at this guy. And yes, I did try to explain to him that dogs have about the same mental capacity of a 1 year old. You need to condition them to stop barking, not yell at them. I'd hate to have been one of HIS kids.
Of course, they have never been as loud as the coyotes around here.
Michelle

Becareful he doesn't use the BB gun to shoot at your dogs. Dogs will bark because that is why we have dogs to let us know what is going on outside of our house. I have three. my one was barking at 11:00 at night and I yelled and told him to stop and he did but kept doing it well it got to a point that he wouldn't stop and he was growling... well My yelling woke my husband up before the barking did and as soon as he got up he told me our dog had something and that was his bark, so my husband went up there and sure enough he was right, he had a skunk in his kennel , as soon as steve got close our dog had killed it and sadly enough our dog was wet and stinky... the skunk ended up spraying both my yellow female and him.. and the skunk lost his life in the mist of it all. Dog will bark and mine do and I worry about our animal buggin everyone around but we can't help in the fact that they are to let us know things are coming around, I have a lady who walks dogs up and down our street over and over and I told her when you get down the road i have dogs outside (she is a trainer) and they will bark because of the dogs, and she said thank you and kept going. but i think there is a barking time they can complain about and if I am not mistake (someone correct me if i am wrong) but it is from 10:00pm till 7:00am they can't bark continously or you can get a ticket.
Heck they won't even do anything around here about dogs running around. I had a pitpull and another one in my yard and unless I walk up to the dogs on my property and it growls or trys to attack me the sherriffs won't do anything.. well I will not walk up to any dog I do not know. thanks.
good luck and I hope this man doesn't use the BB to shut your dogs up.. becareful

Yes, that has been a concern. Luckily nothing has happened so far. And yes, our barking dogs have been a lifesaver in the past. When we lived in the city, our house was one of only a few that were never broken into, and even fenced a hoodlum once long enough for the police to get there.
I keep trying to be nice to the neighbor and don't want to turn it into a confrontational thing. He also knows about my extensive gun collection and don't think he has the b*llS to do anything like that.
It's good to see so many that love their animals.
