I was leaving for work tonight at 9:30 pm, and walked out my door to go to my jeep, and right when I stepped down the first step, a skunk tail came in between the steps from under my porch. I almost stepped on it. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/shocked.gif It was under my porch. I went back into the house and had to stay inside til the stupid thing left. It stuck around for about 45 minutes. Does anyone know how to prevent a skunk from coming so close to your house?? I don't want it to make a home under my porch. I only have one door I can use to leave the house due to a fence at my other door for the dog. Maybe if I kept a porch light on, will it keep it away?? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/confused.gif

Light does help but is not an end-all solution to your problem. I would however, start with either using lattice or gopher wire to block the access under your porch. They can burrow under if they want but it isn't likely. DIY.com has a wonder message board that covers anything you may want to know. I would start there.

Moth balls or those horrid-smelling "toilet cakes" (couldn't they come up with a better name for a product than "toilet cake"???) work great for running off skunks and keeping them out.
Only trouble is, you might have to refresh the supply at least one time, to make sure they don't come back when the moth ball odor weakens. That stuff stinks too but not nearly as bad as skunk spray.
Number one thing is to make sure there is no pet food or garbage scraps, compost, etc., to attract skunks. Once they find something to eat, they do not go away easily.

I hear that if you see a skunk to quickly turn around drop your pants and hang a BA at the skunk and he will run never to return again thinking you were going to spray him.

http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif Man, that skunk would really take off never to return at the sight of my BA. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif
I left my porch light on last night, and he wasn't there when I left for work. I think I might try the moth balls. I would try the lattice, but parts of the porch are hard to get to and I really don't want to crawl under it to put that stuff on. Thanks for the advise guys. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/yes.gif

Newcomer, I think you should "hang a BA" in Coarsegold and try and scare off the skinheads.

Did you try moving in under THEIR porch? Maybe if they knew how it felt...
