What is the best restaurant in the Oakhurst Area?
List your top three favorites (in order). Let us know why you love this local business. What makes them great? Is it the food, location, service, price, or what?
We can nominate and change nominations throughout the Winter season. This will be a good thread to allow all of us to talk about this before we vote. Polls will begin in the Spring time and close next Fall. The five most nominated and talked about restaurants will be included in this poll to determine the best restaurant.
Alt identities are fine to use, but please only use one profile name when nominating and voting for this. You don't want bad karma, do you? http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/wink420.gif

I may decide to change my nominations before the poll starts, but this is what I have so far:
1.) Katie's Country Kitchen
They have great breakfast and the staff is wonderful! The prices may not be the cheapest, but they do give you a lot of food. I wish they stayed open later. A 24 hour Denny's would do good up here, but I'd much rather see Kati's step up to fill that void.
2.) Oka's Japanese
For the style of food and quality, it's worth the price. The staff has always been friendly. I'm not dig on the way the place is decorated, but at least it has personality. Perhaps the new owners will consider making some changes. I'll be anxious to see what happens under the new ownership.
3.) Round Table Pizza
I know you probably wouldn't expect me to put a pizza place here, but I like the local Round Table Pizza. They have nice people working there, a wide selection of food and beer on tap, a big TV with a Dish and arcade games to play. Who is too grown up for arcade games? Not me!
So there you have it. The top three that came to mind for now. I also enjoy Hondos, The Mountain House and Velvet Rose. I'm looking forward to trying out the new BBQ place. I may have to change my three nominations before spring comes. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/stretch.gif

1) The Mountain House (what more can I say?) Hope they never sell, (sorry) or at least don't mess with the menu.
2) Oka's Th e water & tea is better with the new purification syste, Heres hoping the new owners (from So Ca) update the menu, but keep the great sushi chefs
3) Crab Cakes I always like to go here, because I never order off the menu, I just tell them what I want & how I want it, & they prepare it. I hear Roman is a tough boss, but the food is great.

This is difficult.
1. Szechuan.. Even though I worked there in High School.. I think it says a lot when you still will eat somewhere you once worked at... though I do not drink the water or soda.
2. Oka's.. the last time I went anyway.. Mmm California Rolls and tofu
3. Pete's Place.. for breakfast on Sunday especially.. I think that Katies and Country Waffles are too expensive, especially with the crappy service they offer along with the crappy Iced Tea
4. El Cid's Ok I picked four, sue me. mmmmm El Cid's.. great service, great iced tea, great soup, people, and oh man I love it. Mmmm...
So Oakhurst Area?? Does Narrow Gauge, Tenaya etc count?

1. Oka's - Because I can go there and have them cook my food in front of me and I LOVE steak and Lobster. YUM
2. Mountain House - Because They have the best Prime rib EVER!
3. Country Waffles - Because the staff is super friendly, and I can get a simple 2 egg breakfast for 4 bucks, with toast, ham and hashbrowns included! too much for me to even eat all of.

1. Crab Cakes, the finest prepared fresh food on the mountain. Roman runs a tight ship and it is shown in his product. The Best!
2. El Cid's, consistent good food, no surprises. Great prices.
3. Mountain House, anytime, day or night, the quality is going to be there with a very deep menu.

The five diamond restaurant is Erna's Elderberry House. Recently, I had the chance to visit the Kyoto Kafe with someone who really knows Japanese food. I really liked the vegetable tempura which is something knew for me! The others had the shrimp tempura and several other dishes. Dodie

1. Pizza Factory. Pricy as heck, but definitely the best pizza I've ever had. And I'm ALL about the pizza.
2. Alfonso's. Best place to have lunch at on a warm, sunny afternoon. Good burritos.
3. El Cid. Pretty good food. Awesome chips. I'm vaguely fond of the outside patio area, for some odd reason.
Honorable mention to Kyoto Kafe. I'm not really into Japanese food, but the few times I've been taken there I've rather enjoyed it. They also inspired me to buy one of those lucky cats, because those are just too cool.

1. Round Table pizza has the best prices, lots of choice of beer and the biggest salad in town.
2. Oak's, but they have new owners so I not sure if they are still good.
3. Old Mexico Taqueria, prices are alittle high but good food.
3. El Cid's, I have a tie for 3. I eat at both but I eat at Old Mexico more just cause it is in town.

pizzapizza, Round Tabel Salad bar is a lot better than Me & Eds has over 36 salad bar toppings unlike Me & Eds which just has pizza topping on the salad bar. They have atleast 10 beers on tap and they have an extra large pizza for $10.99. I ate there last night for under $25 had beer, salad and soda for four people. Plus there pizza is the best!!!!!!!!

Dinner for 4 all under $25 with beer!!! That's a great price for all of that...It seems the two of us can't get out of a hamburger joint for about that around here...even at our pizza parlors. I'd better check out Round Table in our neighborhood.

I preferred the selections/food/atmosphere at 3 Sisters before they moved, but maybe I just need to keep going back. I LOVE the "Garden Pesto" pan pizza at Round Table, with extra green onions on top. And Pete's Place has a great BLT with Avocado sandwich that even out-of-towners always rave about. (Their zucchini sticks are great, too!)
Personally, my all-time favorite type of restaurant (besides seafood on the wharf at Monterey) is a place like Red Lobster, Sizzler and Chili's.

Hi Everyone, I am Dave from Round Table Pizza. A customer of mine told me to join, to read what everyone was saying about RTP. I like most of what I have read.
This May will be RTP’s 10th year being open I try very hard to higher good people and serve a great pizza and have a fresh salad bar. The hardest part about running a restaurant up here is getting good help. It has been better since they opened the college up here. Most of my employees go to school and our very good workers.
My top 3 places to eat, (of coarse I don't go out for pizza. I hardly ever eat pizza anymore but we have a new Smokehouse pizza that I have been eating).
1. Oka's
2. Szchuan
3. Old Mexico Taqueria
I eat at the Taqueria at least once a week and it is always good.

Yes, I've read that in a few places on this site, I have looked in to it but you can't get maps for up here that show all the roads and most streets don't have street lights. Also, the main reason is the insurance, there is no way you can deliver enough up here to cover the cost. Delivery driving is one of the top 10 highest risk jobs, just a few months ago a RTP driver was shot and killed for 10 pizzas and $30. I have done delivery in a town similar to Oakhust and it just ends up taking away from the dine-in service. If you are having a party and order 5 or more pizzas and let me know a day ahead of time I usually can deliver them. I have this one group that I deliver 20 pizzas to almost every week at Bass Lake.
Also, if you haven't tried our new Smoke house pizza you should try it. It is a little spicy. A large is on special for $13.99 right now, it is one of the best.

I've always been happy with my dining experiences at Round Table. Great family place...all three pizza places in town are very family friendly.
Three of my top restaurants for just an all-around good meal and good service, to take company with varying appetites and tastes would be...
1. Crab Cakes
2. El Cid
3. Mountain House (however, last time we went there in a large group it took an hour to get our food, and my one brother didn't get his meal at all and his finally came when we were all finishing...just a fluke and a very busy, confusing night for the cooks...I hope)
I also love The Red Fox in Mariposa!

I haven't been to MH for a long time (can't afford to eat out much since I quit my fulltime job) and I am pretty sure a lot is different there menu and otherwise, but I used to have this little hobby, where I was on a quest for the best Reuben sandwich. Mountain House, at that time, won the contest. A bunch of us from work had gone there for lunch one day, and for whatever reason, our meals were so late it took all of our allotted lunch time and some people had to leave to return to work. But like I said, that was a long time ago. For now, I must admit that my homemade Reubens are the best I've ever had, but I am dieting again so too bad for me!
Yes, I will have to try that Valley Veggie pizza, as long as it doesn't have red sauce on it. I like creamy garlic or pesto sauces. Kinda got burned out on the traditional red stuff.
Oh, and the Old Mexico Taqueria is where I practically lived on their Grilled Veggie burrito, but I would have them custom make it. Just rice, beans, the veggies, sour cream and guacamole. The guys preparing it were always surprised that I didn't want cheese or salsa or all the other "goodies," so I had to explain it every time I ordered one. I would usually pack it back to work with me and of course, as soon as I would have a mouthful, I would get a phone call!

I am the original owner of the Jade, I have seen enough of your comments on the Jade to have me post this message. First of all, the Jade has been here for 23 going on to 24th year. When it was first open, the population in Oakhurst was 2,300. We used MSG as in ALL restaurants did at that time. But we changed our receipes due to the controversy and replace MSG with Chicken extract (dehydrated chicken brooth). We anticipated the tastes of the food will changed and there will be a drop in sales for a while before we can perfected our receipes. Unfortunately, my sister had the accident and broke her neck and could no longer manage the restaurant effectively. I have my cousins to run the restaurant for a while, but their big city style did not go with our theme - local restaurant serving local people with a fair price. ( You can check to see how many of our regulars come in and don't have to pay bev or getting a special discount). I have no choice but to let them go and have Bill the new chef from Kwansi, China, to run the restaurant. I hope this will settle all the rumours around town about the Jade. As far as I know, Bill has a good list of receipes without MSG and if you have not been to the Jade for a while, come and try it then let me know. By the way the one that claims that his used to work for me, who is he?

I tryed the Jade Resturant again last week. Now, while it isn't Katherine, and her incredible friendliness, the food was great, and the service was pretty darn good. People ask me all the time which of the 2 Chinese resturants I like. I tell them The Jade. Sure, the ambiance is more like what people think a Chinese resturant is supposed to be on the other side of the street. But I'm looking for good food, not music and decorations. I'll eat at the Jade at least once a month. At least takeout, since I work so much.
As for Richard...search the Forums, hes badmouthed Andrades, the Jade, Three Sisters.

I have never even been inside the Jade.. dunno, a long time ago someone said "the food there sucks" and I took it as truth... I guess contempt prior to investigation.. I really should go check it out.
Yeah, I went back and read a bunch of archived posts, and Thrower's ideas are definetly not someone I would base an opinion on.

We have always liked the Jade - even before we moved here and came to vacation. There was one period though - I think around 2002 or 03' where it wasn't that hot. We kinda stopped going there after that. But then went again last year and it was good again. Since then we got poor and don't eat out that often! But, my picks are
1. 3 Sisters - excellent European type food, but pricey and not always open
2. Crab Cakes - great salads, crabcakes and desserts to die for, reasonable prices and
3. Mountain House - great atmosphere, prices and everything is good.
All 3 restaurants have good service and friendly.

Mountain House (they please everyone)
Crab Cakes
3 Sisters
Then it would have to be Kyoto.

Actually, I got the best Cobb Salad (for lunch) I ever ate at Ducey's yesterday and a killer dessert (later at 5 pm) from their excellent chef, Dawn. Had a little trouble coordinating my visits, though ... easy to get mixed up between the hours of operation of the upstairs and downstairs eateries.
Just discovered two restaurants over in Mariposa and I can't wait to go back, especially Savory's. Not to be missed!
