I graduated from YHS in 1996. At that time, I had the attitude that it was not a very good school and the administration was a big reason for that. They have a new Principal now (Well, he was my Vice Principal) and things look very different around there. The school has a fence, new cafeteria, new classrooms, office, etc. I'm not a good person to judge the school as it is now, but my sister is a high school teacher in LA and it sure sounds like they have it a lot worse than the kids up here have it.
Drugs are in every high school. Gangs are in most. Some schools have shootings. Some schools have gangs jumping students in bathrooms. Some schools have a very hard time teaching 30 students at once because not all of them speak English.
I realize now that I had it pretty good at YHS. If I had kids, I'd want them to go there. There are better schools, but there are many schools that are much worse... and even scary!

BTW: I voted "Other" because I think it is a good school, but maybe not excellent.

My place is right next to it, and it looks better everyday, there are really doing a good job of remodeling it, you should check it out.

Hey I'm from Sierra too! Don't know much about what type of school it is.I have worked on some of the new projects there, like the cafeteria/gymnasium and from what I've seen it seem like a nice enough school.

Have to add my 2 cents worth here. When I first moved to the mountains, I moved to North Fork. I lived there for 15 years ..then got my real estate license and "learned" from other realtors and Oakhurst residents that North Fork was a bad place to live. So don't always believe what you hear. North Fork was a great place to live and out of fear and unfounded rumors it had become, to outsiders, not a good place. Some Realtors actually would NOT show property there until I became a member of the local board and pointed out all that North Fork had to offer. I do not live there now but not because I didn't like it...I loved it and still do...I got divorced in 1990 and moved above Oakhurst because it was easier for me not to be in the same area as my exhusband. So, be careful when you listen to the rumor mill. We all have our opinions but sometimes we form opinions based on rumor rather than fact. There is good and bad EVERYWHERE. So I'm sure Yosemite High is not perfect nor horrible. The experience a student has at any school most often depends on the student. And sometimes the teachers the student is exposed too.

My son is finishing his last year at YHS and over those four years I have met a lot of students. They are successful and they participate in school activities and community service. As far as staff goes, you can't have every student admire every teacher, but all of the kids I know have many teachers they not only admire and respect, but genuinely like a great deal. My son had a choice to attend Sierra or Yosemite. Although most of his 8th-grade friends chose Sierra, he chose Yosemite because of its IB program and he called it a "progressive" school where he felt he had many opportunities. So anyway, not to put any other school down, but I was asked, so I answered that I think YHS is a good place to get an education.

I feel that Yosemite High is a cut above the other High schools that I have personal knowledge of. The College prep course selection, I. B. classes, teachers, counselors and principal provide an exceptional opportunity for the students. Maybe; the school can't be all things for all people, some responsibility for academic success still depends on parental guidence and support. We as a community are very lucky to have a progressive growing school.

I voted other because you could not put to many drugs, poor teachers, and not a very good school all together. I went to Yosemite and I was what woudl be considered a "nerd" because of that I was pushed around and beat up all of the time, while the administration stood by and did nothing. I also saw how people, that shouldn't even be in high school, graduate and not even be able to read or do simple math and last but not least the drugs. When I was there you could get anything you wanted... now it is worse. I was very worried when my little brother started going there because I know what it was like for me and he is in a lot of ways like me. I think that administration is too laxed on most things. I hear of school violence and drugs and many other problems and they do nothing. A simple suspension is not the answer. I think they should get a more conservative principal and maybe then certain things will get cleaned up. But I do not see it happening the way things are. But that is just my take.

TriDevotee, what year did you graduate from there? Has your brother experienced any of those things since he's been there?

We are fortunate to live in this area. Most of our school districts rank in the higher groups of schools in the state, and some rank in the very top groups like Bass Lake and Coarsegold districts.

I graduated in 98. Luckily my little brother has not gone through what I have. However, I do know of many people that have gone through what I have. My mother has already stated that if she see's anything beginning to happen to my brother that occured with me, she will nip it in the bud before it gets too bad.

Never attended Yosemite, but I know some of the kids that go there from thier parents and they seem to turn out just fine, from the outside it looks like a really nice school, and it looks like they are making some real progress on remodeling it, but ya never know what goes on inside???

Parent involement is very important when things get like they did for you. I know most kids don't want their parents to get involved for fear of making things worst, but once the parents let the school know that they wont put up with that kind of learning environment then the school will usually will take steps to solve the problem. If not then the school board will.

this is a story I have been telling my kids for 26 years now...
A young boy and his grandfather were sitting the front porch of their home. A car pulled up and the woman inside asked "what type of town is this?" the Grandfather replied "why what type of town did you come from?"
She went on to explain that they were moving because they hated their old town. They wanted a new start where there were no rumor mills and every one liked each other. She also said that they had no friends any where they lived in the old town.
The Grandfather said...."oh, you better not live here. It has rumors and hatred wherever you look." ... the family moved on.
A little while later a car of people pulled up. The woman in the car stuck her head out and asked if this was a nice town. He asked why did she ask.
SHe said that they were transfered from their old town and they just wanted a place as nice as they lived before. That they had so many friends , and parties on the whole block every holiday.
The Grandfather said "welcome to our town, you will find friends and happiness everywhere here."
the boy asked his grandfather why he told different people different things. Asked if he was lying ....
The Grandfather said... "son, you find in any place the things you seek, you make your world and can make of it what you can"
I moved from a place that the school was non-responsive to parental involvment. Here in the RIvergold and Yosemite(soon to be the same) School districts they welcome parents input. If the parent takes the time they allow wonderful responses and results.
The important thing to remember is your child is not attending a far off school, but an extension of his home. You as a parent need to be involved.
The other important thing to remember is you can make out of any experiance what you want. Do you wish to be the person who carries the baggage of his "old town" or the prospects of a "new one"

I totally agree that parents should be involved in the goings on with their child's problems at school. But it sad to say that a parent can only do so much if the teachers, principal, and other administration just sit there and try to make everyone happy.
It is not a popularity contest. If there is a problem go to the person or persons causing the problem and make it stop. Not talk about it... make it stop. That is a big problem we all have today with many things, the higher ups just want to talk about problems and not do anything about it untill it is too late. If these bullies and other little punks knew there would be problems for doing something wrong it would more than likely stop. Just slapping a kid on the wrist only tells them they can do what they want and not get in trouble.
Gee, sounds like our legal system.

I have another year before my oldest starts High School... I try now that they are young to ask them every day when they get home how there day went at school.. I might ask three four times when I have a feeling there is something wrong or I give them the chance to tell me what is going on... So when then start high school they can come to us and share with us how there day is...
Is there a place to check and see the top High Schools are in the area?????
just wondering...

A question: What ever happened to the FFA teacher that was dismissed early? I have read all of the articles, but I have been unable to find out why he was removed so suddenly. Does anyone know? I think his name was Eklund, and he had transformed the Ag program. Sandee
