I have always been an old movie buff. Today I watched a movie on TMC that I hadn't seen since I was 10 yrs. old. "The Mortal Storm". Now, this movie was made in 1940 but I didn't see it till 1958. Starring Jimmy Stewart, Robert Young, Anne Sullivan. About the Nazis takeover in Germany and Jimmy & Anne try to escape to Austria border on Skies! I watch these movies not so much for the history, but the architecture, furnishings, fashions, etc. For instance, I was amazed that women skied in skirts! The skis in the movie were as long as my husband's when I first met him. (Not that he is that old, but he was/is an expert skier and was loathe to change over to the "short" skies for a long time). I also like how at the end of the movie a narrator tells us of little tidbits about the movie you never heard of. For instance, in this one the director was trying not to turn off the German audience by not stating what country this group actually lived in (but everyone knew it was Ger.) and not mentioning that the people being picked on were the Jews (but you also knew that). But when Hitler watched the movie he banned it big time and also banned any other movies made by MGM and so that little plan did not pan out for the studio. I enjoyed how they portrayed the people skiing what with the wind machines and back drops and all and even the propaganda phrases throughout! Old movies are history in the making. Anybody else have a favorite old movie?

I have always been a fan of the older (scrooge) "A Christmas Carol". 1950's I believe. I know there was one even older. The newer ones just don't seem to have the same feel.

There is an old SciFi film I haven't seen in years "5 Million Years to Earth", B&W but still spooky and way ahead of it's time story wise even now.

My friend wanted me to watch "Some Like it Hot" from 1959 starring Marilyn Monroe. I didn't think I would like it but it was a good movie.

My absolute all-time fave movie is an oldie - African Queen with Bogie and Hepburn. I caught a portion of it the other day on cable and was trying to tell a young person about it later in the day. Had to laugh - their response was it sounded like a chick flick. Can you imagine Bogie and Hepburn reduced to 'chick flick' genre????

Absolute favorites...

It Happened One Night
China Seas
Red Dust

Does anyone know what they have in common?

And, a while back I mentioned that any movie with Robert Ryan was a favorite of mine, I received a response a few days later from an OO member who said RR was his/her great uncle.. How cool is that?
