Hello there...my family & I visited Oakhurst and the surrounding areas last summer and LOVED it! We are planning on coming again in March to "test the waters" to see if Oakhurst is where our future home may turn out to be. I have a lot of questions since I am so far away. Would appreciate any and all feedback. I have 3 kids and 3 large indoor dogs.
...My 8 yr old son is in the Cub scouts & also karate here, is there cub scouting &/or karate in Oakhurst or nearby?
...And my 4 yr old daughter wants to learn ballet. I'd love to send her somewhere close by.
...Any tips for where to live? We are looking to buy a minimum 4 bedroom and 2 bath with a nice chunk of land of no less than an acre... Thanks in advance!

Hello http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

To my knowledge, there is both Karate and Cub Scouts (is that young boy scouts?) here. I know there were several dance studious up here at one point, someone else could probably give you more information.

Oakhurst might be more tricky to find a 4bd/2bth on an acre, but there's a lot of nice surrounding areas as well. I haven't house shopped in a while, but last i checked there were quite a few in North Fork, Bass Lake (some areas might have an acre?), Ahwahnee and Coarsegold.

Good luck http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

Im not sure about boyscouts, but I know there are girlscouts, and I assume one goes along with the other. Scouting for the little one will be more of a challenge if youre wanting to do that. There are martial arts and dance classes galore up here.

Im really partial to the Ahwahnee/Nippanawasee (sp) area.

Yes, there is Cub Scouts. My son has just joined and is having a great time. There is only 5 kids in his den and they would love some more! Last weekend they took a night hike up Goat Mountain to look at the star constellations. They saw an owl on the way up the trail, he is still talking about it. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

Oakhurst also has several dance classes, one of my girls goes to one, and one to the other, mostly their own preference. We have Center Stage Dance studio. and Patti Law School of dance

My three main concerns (besides price range) for homes in this area are:

1. How is the water quality/availability? (Some people sell their places because they are tired of dealing with this problem.)

2. Is there a homeowners association, and if so, are their rules compatible with your preference of lifestyle, landscaping, the color of paint you want to use, pets or livestock, etc.?

3. Roads/traffic/access. A lot of places up here have driveways that are very steep, on blind curves, or are along roads that can be challenging to make left-hand turns onto, or have been poorly maintained, etc. Also, things usually look great in the summer, but try to visit the area in the dead of winter. That's when many new people have to face problems they hadn't expected. Depending on where you situate, you may need 4-wheel drive, chains and experience in driving on icy mountain roadways.

Those would be my main concerns. Hope I haven't sounded too full of gloom and doom.

Some months ago, I posed the question about cub scouts and you graciously answered...now, moving into your area is a reality and my family and I are coming in April...we are moving to Coarsegold - where do I sign up my son for Cub Scouts ? Appreciate your info : )

Congratulations! That is quite a big move!

Did you purchase a home? Or will you be leasing in the beginning?

If you need help with a purchase, let me know - I am a real estate agent at Century 21 Golden Chain.
