So I get a call at 5am this morning and it's my on site maintenance man. He said a bear cub had gotten into our "bear proof" dumpster late last night and He heard it crying for several hours. He didn't hear it for awhile and went out to the dumpster to see if it had gotten out on it's own, which it had. He said he saw 3 cubs and then turned around and mama was behind him and charging. He shot his gun at the ground in front of mama, which scared her off and he got into the truck and backed up. Mama came right back and gathered the kids and went off into the forest. He was a bit shaken up. He's seen lots of bears, but never been rushed like that. And if you are wondering, yes he called the Fish and Game Dept and SHeriff's Dept to let them know. I've seen signs of bears daily on my way to work. They have been at the picnic area just south of the NGI.

Nope, hes ascared too! Actually, they don't show until long after everyone has gone home, but a couple of the old timers do carry some kind of spray repellent. Check with BillyPilgrim and see what she has.http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/16/16_3_163.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZNxmk278CVUS)

So.... How do you folks deal with bears when your out on the trail?

you go up to the bear, tap him/her on the nose and say sternly "bad bear!"

(honestly, this is how Steve "bearman" talks to bears in Mammoth Lakes when the bears come into Human territory.... and it works too!)

We haven't seen the Mama bear and cubs lately, but have had an agressive male bear around nearly every night. He keeps running off when my Maint. man shoots near him, but is getting more agressive as the weather is turning. So we finally got the ok to trap him for relocation. The trapper came yesterday and set the trap. Of course the bear was nowhere to be found last night, but hopefully will show and take the bait tonight. I mentioned to the trapper that I would like to get a photo of the bear once he is in the trap, but was told not to, that the bear would be pissed off enough without people looking at him.

Which leads me to believe this one has been 'relocated' before.

Bears are much more aggressive and actively seeking ANY food sources in fall because they have to fatten up for hibernation. It's a hormonal thing. Hehehe. Even though I doubt our bears hibernate completely, they still have the built in "Eat everything in site" instinct. You girls best demand an escort http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif

We're going to bait the traps with Lamb Shank bones, Salmon scraps and Prime Rib scraps tomorrow night. I may have to camp out to watch the action!
