Well, the CC sells food that, IMHO, is cooked in oil that hasn't been changed since the turn of the century... http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif

That a new way to conserve oil. They are fueling some cars with vegetable oil. Or at least trying to.

Fueling diesels with veggie oil works very well. And little places like that usually give the used oil away for free.

The Coarsgold Cafe left a very bad first impression on me the 1st time I went there. It was a thursday night and I went to park in the disabled parking spot (which I am entitled to) and because it was the oldies car cruise night I was told that I could not park there because it blocked the only area (the disabled parking spot) that the old cars could drive through to get to park in the front row of the place. I was so pised off. I left and told them I would never give them my business. I should have called the police.

That really sucks and pisses me off too. I certainly won't be giving them my business.

I hope they're not going to turn it into a real estate office.

We just came back from the recently purchased/remodeled Mining Company Restaurant in Coarsegold (across from CHP & Coarsegold Post Office). We were very impressed with the food and ambiance. It has been tastefully remodeled. It is clean with private booths and comfortable tables. We've only had breakfast so far but can say without reservation (no pun intended) we're definitely going back for lunch and dinner. Chef Robert created a wonderful meal with great presentation. From what I understand he teaches at a culinary school and I must say it's a position well deserved. This new restaurant is a welcome addition to the mountain area!

I stopped by the DD Diner in Coarsegold on Tuesday and it had just opened. At that time they only had a lunch menu but today they were supposed to have a full menu but I did not get a chance to go by. They redesigned the inside a bit and made it bit more upscale. I will have to try it soon. I am suprized that Cactus Kate has not beat me to this post http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

I had heard from someone in the know that "The Mining Co." would be opening this week...the new owner is actually Tom, the owner of the Coarsegold Cafe who's trying to sell his cafe business for $80k (it's in this week's Sierra Advertiser). The chef he's hired is from Fresno...but I was told he's only been hired on a temporary basis (like 2 or 3 weeks) to train the cooks and then he'll be on his way. (Boy, that Tom must have a lot of money to buy DD's before even selling the cafe and then to hire a chef just to train and consult...wow!) Is he keeping the cafe open with his new restaurant also going now? Good for him!

Went in there today around 11:30, they gave us the lunch menu, I asked if breakfast was still available & the server went to ask. She returned with breakfast menus and told us "the chef will be happy to prepare you breakfast". The food was good, the service very good & the place looks very different from how it used to. The owner came over to see how we liked the food, he was very nice. The prices seemed fair, I got a look at the lunch menu & there were some things I'd like to come back & try. I thought the booths were cool, they open up the barrier between the booths for larger groups. Nice. I didn't expect such a good experience, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I went there today for an early dinner with FOUR KIDS, ages 9 and under. First, I have to say I really like what they've done with the place...the fresh paint, woodwork, and seating, all very nice (much better than DD Miner's which had grown kinda tired looking). However, and maybe it's just the dinner set-up, the place seemed a little to fancy, schmancy for my entourage. Tablecloths, cloth napkins, formal dinner settings, low-playing music (little too quiet for my crew).

The dinner menu ranged from prime rib, lemon-herb chicken, scampi, rib-eye, chicken pasta primavera ($9.95 to $15.95 thereabouts)...I ordered the tournedos of beef at $12.95. Very nice meal. Came with a dinner salad, rice pilaf (you could also choose mashed or baked potato instead, and a vegetable medley. Although there were breadplates and butter knives at the table, there was no bread and butter. (I didn't say anything...cuz I didn't need it!) The kids all had "kid's meals"...there were 3 choices (grilled cheese, chicken strips or cheeseburger), not on the actual printed menu. The food was all good.

Service was attentive, a little awkward and not seasoned, of course...they'll get better in time.

Anyway, overall, it was a good experience. Not anything like I expected...I think I had expected something more casual and well, kid-friendly. Maybe because of it's predecessor. This place would all work for adults and very patient, mature children...we managed, but it just didn't feel like a good fit if you know what I mean...I wanted to get the check and go.

I thought the original place was terrible. Tried it several times - not good! Glad to see the new reviews since owners have changed. It's a very cute place - just needed to have good food! Will try it out soon.

I only went to DD Miner's once and it was for breakfast...could definately get a better breakfast at Katie's! I think the new place has good food and hopefully, they can keep it up after the chef is gone. They may be opening in a soft way...there's no new banner saying "Mining Company, NOW OPEN"...everything still says DD Miners...so people might not even get the idea that the place has changed hands. But when they get in there...they'll know! It's totally different.

Yup, I gots out some of my good duds to go an try this new resteerant. I kind of missed the pictures of my old friends (the miners) up on the walls. Me and sum of them went way back ya know.

Fer those of you that haven't been to the new Miner's camp, you are in for a new atmosphere. Gone are all the country knick-knacks, old-time photos on the walls and family type dining. You are now entering a more upscale dining ambiance. Painted with mottled beige/tan walls and a maroon ceiling. The new booths are nicely done. The walls are empty, but I hears rumors a local artist will be hangin their work there.

We went past there the other day and "almost" stopped. Even though its under new ownership our memories of the past DD was too fresh in our minds - terrible food. But, with your raving remarks Cactus Kate we will look into it again. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/eat.gif

Summer.. i went there and had a great supper!
I got SHrimp scampi with salad. They also served a very nice Chardonnay with my supper. I think i like the baked taters at World Sports Cafe better. But DD's is still worth a try. Its much "nicer" inside... they have adopted a look much like the blue heron.

Went there last Friday for lunch with one of my girlfriends and I must say it is totally different inside, but very nice. Our food was very good and service was great. Can't complain though since our waitress was my daughter.

Has anyone tried the Double D since it changed hands? My husband and I have always enjoyed the Double D. The food was good and it was cheap! So we go there for dinner last night and they totally revamped the place! It has so much of a more upscale feel to it. They painted it, added more booths, closed in the kitchen. It looks like a fancy place now. The food was just as good and just as affordable. The staff was friendly and the service was quick! Loved it and will definitely go there again!

Well, we just keep going back and every time have a great experience.

The staff is friendly, food is great - and what can I say, the ambiance... well - they have some of my work up on their walls - so I think the ambiance is pretty dang good IMHO! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

No, really. The Mining Co,as its now called, in Coarsegold has really become one of our favorite places to eat in the mountains. If you haven't tried them, give them a shot!

And I second Cactus Kate, the Turtle Cheesecake is wonderful!

Here's an email I recently sent to the owners of the MCR due to my horrible experience there:

Hello Mr. & Mrs. Williams Smith,

I recently visited your restaurant in Coarsegold, CA, to which I want to tell you of my experience. We arrived very hungry around 12:30pm, on November 19, 2006, and were loosely greeted at the door; we almost had to initiate contact. A large party arrived shortly after us and the hostess seemed nervous. She was not very communicative, and we stood there for quite some time as she wrote in the book at the front desk. Would she have communicated some form of direction that she needed some time, we would not have had an issue, but she did not give any indication of what was going on, and seemed to have a hard time reading the clock as she kept looking at it and jotting something in her book.
She finally asked one of the waitresses to seat us. We were seated, where we waited again for some time until Mark came over to take our drink order. He returned with our drinks, but we needed some extra time to make our decisions, but I made a point to ask for straws for our beverages. Mark did make some kind of affirmation and came back minutes later to get our order.
I ordered a double cheese burger, but specified that I did not want mayonnaise and my friend made his order. We waited for quite some time again until Mark returned with our food. I noticed mayonnaise had been placed on my burger and I informed Mark that I had asked against it.
He took my plate without any apology or even a response. I had to wait while my order was remade. Mark did come back to inform us that the kitchen was making another burger, at which time I asked if he was still working on those straws. He did remember, but again no apology. The hostess came by without saying anything and placed two straws on the table, not noticing that our drinks were empty. Mark did came back a while later and asked if we wanted refills, but had forgotten what we had ordered.
My friend had eaten slowly, but was finished by the time my order came back. The plate was smaller and there was no mayonnaise this time, but there was also no lettuce, tomato, onions, or pickles - something that was on the larger plate earlier. I had to ask for them. We finally left around 1:30pm; much later than was necessary.
I can tell you that I have never had quite an experience in a restaurant like that before and I don't think I will be visiting again very soon.
I wanted to convey my disappointment to you so that you can make appropriate adjustments for others.
Lastly, our visit was the result of my freind being given a gift card to your establishment by his employer, but by this experience alone, he says he will recommend to his employer to no longer purchase these in the future.

Thank you,
[ace]

...And I never received a response. They obviously don't want my business and I agree.

Hmm, sorry your experience was so bad. The times I have been in there with my parents, it has been great. We went in the first part of November (the second time they took me) and got there just after the time that they quit serving breakfast, but the waiter asked us if we would like to see the breakfast menus along with the lunch menu. (Big mistake, took me twice as long to make up my mind, LOL! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif) Since I had had the burgers before (which were very good, and no problems with the orders), I finally opted to order breakfast, the Chicken Fried Steak, which was awesome! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif The waiter, the person who bussed the table, the hostess were all attentive, our drinks were kept filled, we did have to ask for jelly for our biscuits and toast (only because they had already cleared them from the table from the breakfast service). The hostess seated us within minutes of our arrival, even though they were busy at the time we went in. All in all, my trips there have been pleasant and I haven't had a bad meal yet. I intend on going back again and again, as do my parents.

Sometimes it's who's on staff that makes all the difference...sometimes the entire staff is doing a better than average job and then a couple months later a few critical people quit, and new people are hired who may be substandard in customer service skills enter the scene. Good management is key for optimal staffing...Even though you didn't get a response, hopefully your negative experience was considered and appropriately addressed. Good thing you took note of names and all the other details.

I've only gone to the Mining Co twice...both experiences were "good enough", but not what I would consider "great". That applies to the food and service. Good enough is just that...I'll go back, but not on a frequent basis.

I too, am fond of straws, which reminds me that one of my visits to the Mining Company, I was denied http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/cry.gif.

Maybe the staff has had a bad experiance with the cello-toothpicks, they use to hold a triple decker sandwich together with, and a straw, which could be used to shoot them out of http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/rolleyes2.gif...Just a thought... http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/tongue.gif

Mining Company Restaurant encourages discussion and always looking to be sure that our service and food is what our customers expect.

Mining Company owners and personnel would always like to take care of any service issues immediately while you our customers are on the premises, however, unfortunately as you can see in the response this did not happen.

This was a rather lengthy response that was sent via email to the sender:

First let me apologize profusely for your experience at our restaurant, there is no excuse for the kind of service you encountered. The type of service you describe does not meet our criteria for our servers, hosts, bussers, and kitchen staff for service, food preparation and presentation to you our customer.

Secondly, please accept my apology for the tardiness of this response. My husband and I have been stricken with bronchial flu/illness and have been both confined for the last three weeks. Today, is my first full day back in the office.

Mining Company Restaurant has highly qualified "Cordon Bleu" trained Chefs.
Chef Leonard A. Brown works Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings
Chef Justin Williams is available on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
Friday and Saturday evenings they work together.
Sunday mornings Chef Justin is available.
Mining Company is also blessed to have highly qualified servers that act as our Floor Manager and Lead Server: Tony Chavez and Sherry Lipani.

Mining Company's "mission statement" is to provide Good Service and Food to you our customer, and to provide training to some of the young people in our mountain community, both in the kitchen and on the dining room floor. Chef Leonard and Chef Justin work to train the kitchen staff, and Floor Manager Tony Chavez and Lead Server Sherry Lipani work to train our servers, bussers, and hosts.

My husband Tom, and I are also normally on the premises, to greet our customers and check on service. In addition a lead server is usually available at most of our historically busy times, for customer assistance.

Unfortunately, Sunday November 19Th my husband and I were in the process of moving from our home, and were not at the restaurant. .

A portion of the poor service that you encountered had been brought to our attention, as a "server error" previous to our viewing your e-mail. We had taken the time to investigate what happened to your meal and the poor service that you received. There is no explaining poor food preparation or service, my husband and I view it as our responsibility to make sure it does not happen. We thank you for your email and offer the following:

Our Chef's prepare several customers meals/tickets at the same time. Various meals are prepared and placed in the Hot Server Window as they are prepared and then "ticketed" by the Chef when the tables order is complete and ready for the server to tray to the customer.

Unfortunately your server Mark took a meal prepared for another customer, a double hamburger with mayonnaise out of the Chef's window. Your companions meal was in the window, but your hamburger without mayonnaise had not yet been placed in the window. These are the plates that Mark presented to your table.

It is your servers responsibility to be sure that the meal they tray to the customer is the meal the customer ordered, unfortunately Mark did not do that. He compounded the trouble by not apologizing, to you, and then presenting you another meal that was less than our standard, and not what you ordered or should have expected.

Mark not only gave your table poor service, he caused another servers table to wait for their food, as the Chefs had to prepare another meal. This is the investigation that we had done prior to your e-mail, which is being addressed not only with Mark but the entire staff.

The other issues that you brought to our attention in your email do require us to address our staff.

Mining Company has a host person at the front table that is to greet the customer, take the number in the customer party and if a wait is probable the customer name. The host is to enter the number of people in the party and time they arrive, as well as the bus persons name and server name for the table the host assigns.. The host will ask a bus person to seat the customer at a table that is available based on the floor chart and to be sure it is ready for the number in the party. The bus person is responsible for taking the customer the table, taking a drink order and returning with drinks to your table. They also are responsible for letting the server know what drinks the customer requested.

The hostess, must greet and acknowledge a customer as if they have never been to our restaurant, to explain what it is they are doing to provide you the customer with service, to let you know we have special board while you wait, and then to let the customer know the bus person is ready to seat you.

It is the bus person and servers responsibility to fill the customers requests, to welcome our customers, and to provide full glasses, good food, and good service, in a timely manner.

Rest assured we will address all of the items in your email and will rectify any lax hospitality, greeting, poor service and food preparation. This is not what my husband and I expect, nor do most of the people that work at Mining Company expect of themselves. We ask that our customers tell us if they do encounter poor service or food, and want to welcome back our customers time and time again.

My husband Tom and I would like to extend an invitation to you and your companion to return to our restaurant when our Chefs will especially prepare a meal for you as our guests. Please call or email and let us know when you would like to return to our restaurant again, and we will make our Chef Leonard Brown, or Chef Justin Williams as well as our Floor Manager/Lead Server Tony Chavez available to show you what our expectations are, of each of our staff.

Office number 641-5026
Restaurant 683-5853

Again, we sincerely apologize for the service you received, it is not our expectation of what Mining Company is here to provide.

Sincerley,

Michele Williams Smith

Lunch needs a bit of a kick in the butt with some new/different/ unique items.... there just isnt anything "lo cal". WE had lunch there a couple weeks ago, the lunch menu DOES need a kick in the butt, I had a hard time deciding on something because it all looked so boring, and the food and service was just OK...I will give it another try sometime though, being in the business I know when it can be an off day. The chicken fried steak sandwich needs sauce or gravy on it! Then it would have been really good!
I have heard that breakfast is good there, will give that a try.

I guess it was a Coarsegold Meal Day.

We had lunch at CC café and Dinner at DD Mining Company.

Ron, One of my Manufactures Rep came up today and wanted to take us out to dinner His words “Fine dinning”. Poprocks right away said DD miners!
(Last time he was up We Grilled some fat steaks on the Ultimate BB kitchen at our house)
Ron and I headed over in his truck and Poprocks took the Kids to one of our friend’s house so we could have a peaceful dinner.
Around 7pm
We were greeted and seated Right way.

The Hostess/buser asked us if we would like to make a drink order Ron wanted some kind of mixed drink she informed us they did not have it.
Beer and Wine only we told here we will look over the selection of beer and to give us a minute.

My opinion is the beer selection is kind of weak for a restaurant that only has beer and wine. I don’t drink that often but when I do I like to have something with flavor and the only Imports or Premium beer they had was Heineken and Sam Adams.

Ron and I hung out at the Restaurant for about 40 minutes and BS’ed and had a Beer as we waited for Poprocks.
The staff left us alone other that asking if we need more drinks for they knew we where waited for another in our party.

Poprocks showed up and the Hostess/buser? Walked her to our table. (Extra Points:yes:) and asked her what she wanted to drink.

Mark our server came over soon after and asked us if we seen the specials and the way in. We said no and he gave us the Info.

He came back about 5 minutes later and asked us if we were ready to order. But we were to busy talking we were still not ready So he came back a few minutes later and we still had not made up our minds because we got talking again LOL.
He came back and took our order.
Pops and I had the T bone that was on the special.
Ron had Rib Eye.
Salads came right away
Food came in good time
Food was Awesome and in good size portions.
All 3 of us where YUMM YUMMM the whole time.

We all had Cobbler. Very good! LARGE portion.

Ron loved his food and the Restaurant and would like to come back every time he comes up.
Water and Tea where Kept full.
Plates were cleared of the table soon after we cleared the food off them.

Noise in a NICE restaurant drives me nuts.
There were only a few couples in the dinning room and they kept the Riff Raft out side on the patio.
Three Madera County Deputies where eating out side on the patio.rolleyes:
It was very quiet with No Music blaring.

I loved the place the first time we came here with Newcomer and KK. Six months latter I have the same opinion.

We bought a Gift certificate for Nurse windy for all she did for us what we had Cole at Clovis.
She said her and her husband loved it and had a good time last week.

Most People I have talked to did not know this was a Fine Dinning restaurant and never tried it. I think with a little more Marketing and word of mouth this place will be a local favorite as long as they can keep the prices reasonable as they are now.

Agree with Surfus (miss you and Pops!!! Its been too long since we've seen ya) It is with us a favorite! My Dad was up last weekend and - well - we ate there 4 times last weekend! (Close and good...) 3 times for breakfast.

The word is getting out - they are getting more and more busy -

Good! We want them around for a long time!

Dinner there is rather tasty. I went there several times when they first opened and it sounds like they have expanded the menu a lil bit. (didn't have T Bone steaks before). But I agree with Mermomma..... the lunch menu needs a swift kick in the patootie.

Snufy... CrabCakes has the most wonderful Southwestern seafood salad. I can't remember what kind of dressing it had on it... (not a creme dressing). I love any salad with black beans and seafood.

The Mountain area needs more restaurants that serve whole wheat pastas and black beans and brown rice. We need Mediterranean type restaurants/cuisine here on the Mountain.

Tom Smith and his wife are doing a great job of keeping this restaurant's food and service quality one of the best in Madera county. He has always been a gracious host, chatting with you after the meal (not when you are trying to eat it at the right temperature). He certainly tries to boost the businesses in Coarsegold whenever he can, also. My wife and I have eaten there about 10 times, and took a group of 26 others there once. The food and service were excellent.

I know. The temperature is unbearable. It was with wry "Yes I said winter hours!" part of the thread. We actually closed Monday and Tuesday two weeks ago when School went back in session and much of our younger staff went back to school. Just wanted to make sure that it got out on the forum too.

We do have great new server Kathy - she is really sweet and has a great sense of humor, but no way can she cover all the hours of the "school" work experience staff. Tom and I hire 4-5 high school and work experience kids- Alyssa, Megan, Julie, TJ, are on our staff now. Tom and I have been working too: me as a server and host and Tom calling the wheel or doing dishes ( I do those too).
Tom and I love the restaurant but to supplement/cover restaurant expenses by working at Guild Mortgage since November as well. Tom and I do not get a day off ever, and we finally for health as well as cost reasons made this decision. Hopefully, you will not hold it against us or Mining Company and will continue to support it. We do need your continued local support to be here.

Good idea to post your winter hours here on the forum, and I completely understand why you have winter hours. Other restaurants in the area do it to, maybe not in the town areas, but it happens. If they don't shut down on certain days, they certainly reduce their hours during the days they are open. And I understand the working 7 days a week and how bad it can be for your health. Until my parents retired, they worked/ran a gas station/mini-mart/motel 7 days a week. It was hard on both of them. Does my heart good to see them doing the traveling and having the fun they missed out on all those years.

You know we'll still be coming by!

We actually were heading there this morning, but when we pulled in to the lot, you were FULL!!! The Peddlar's Fair and Sunday Church crowds we suspect. Good for you! (We'll come for breakfast another day when not so crowded! I know you usually aren't that busy - just a crazy weekend to be sure!)

We will be open tomorrow Monday, September 1. from 7AM to 9PM.

Mining Company has tried to stay open 7 days - for the last couple of years. We will be trying this out and hope that customers keep coming to see us Wednesday - Sunday, and are understanding of the new hours.

Thank you for coming by = yes we were really busy. But would have loved to see you.

Tomorrow will have our Eggs Benedict after 8:30AM and will have some of our Sunday morning specials in the morning. Am not sure what Justin, Leonard or Antonio will do for lunch and dinner - it is always a surprise for me too!

Tom and I need a day to catch up on the "paperwork and mail" and a day to remember that we are good friends -
