So...is VONS driving you crazy too? I must look so confused walking around in there trying to find something. Today I went in and the produce section has been moved to the other side of the store!!!! I heard they won't be done with the remodel until April. I know it is going to look nice but shopping sure is an adventure these days!

Remodeling is never easy. I have been there shopping 3 times since they started and you need a parka to go there. I decided to take my digital temp sensor there the other day to test the food displays for proper temp because of a 60mins TV show I saw this past weekend. The temps were all within range. as far as keeping food cold I don't think that will be a problem. Back by the meat dept. it registered 20 degrees by the turkey bin. My hands were numb by the time I got throught he meat department. The back of the store was pumping out frigid air into the store and made shopping very uncomfortable. I hope they finish soon.

I kid of look at shopping at Von's (right now) as being on a safari....Don't know if I am going to find what I went looking for but if I see it, I am going to bag it and bring it home for dinnerhttp://oakhurstonline.com/icon/lol.gif
Monday, I asked a friend that works there how much longer it would be and he said 12 weeks more.

Vons is going to be great when thier finished. Thier going to have a fresh fish dept. a sushi bar, a salad bar. The whole bakery deli dept. is going to be remodeled. the pharmacy, bank and cleaners will all be in back of the store.
They said approx. 4 months. for it to be 100% complete.

The Old Mill Mall is realy getting a great new face lift, Jack-in the box, Longs remodel and now Vons.
This spring it will be a great place to shop at.
But I'm like the rest of you, trying to find stuff is tuff. For once when the Vons employee's smile and say can I help you find anything, boy are they in trouble, it's hiking time.

It's not just shopping, it's an adventure. Wish they'd put a panda express back in. I've been able to find everything OK, but I hate that one skinny aisle... http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/rolleyes2.gif

Nope, not me. Too expesive for the things I buy. I shop at Vons. They have some pretty good deals with the card. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wiseguy.gif

They are both too spendy in my book. Being ripped off by Vons just cos they are in Oakhurst doesnt rank high with me. Vons does the same thing in Mammoth Lakes
"we are the only grocery store... so we are gonna charge what we want to". (Same thing happens in Bishop too). So remodel or not.. ill use Vons as I always have.. for the small stuff that i need and dont want to go to Fresburg. I make weekly runs to Winco and Target for my stuff!

I'm really a Vons shopper...but I've been going to Raleys since the remodel began. I just don't have time for adventure shopping and dealing with the temporarily reduced stock, not to mention the visible and not so visible dust that gets stirred up during renovations. I'll be back when the dust settles (literally). I prefer Vons for their prices (sometimes BIG savings with my Vons card) and ease of parking. I loved knowing where everything was and speeding thru...I know Raleys pretty well too (in the product map sense), and much better than I'd know Vons right now...so it's Raley's for the time being.

Right now shopping at
vons will save you lots of money. lots of good deals.
They want to get rid of stock while renovating.
Raley's has always been to expensive and I have family member that works there too.

Wow....and I thought it was an adventure when it rained really hard a couple of weeks ago and the roof leaked! I have had a friend doing the shopping for me since I came down with that darned pneumonia again..and she didnt say anything about it...! I am not up to an "adventure" right now when I go to the grocery store..so maybe I will TEMPORARILY shiftback to Raleys......I remember how impossible it was to find things when Raleys remodelled years ago...~ I was lost for weeks! lol
( hmmm...maybe thats how I wound up shopping at Vons???)

I went shopping there yesterday. Whadda mess! Many of the employees hours have been drastically cut and they are getting pissy! They were saying hours were cut because business is down so much, but that once the remodel is over, they expect all of their customers to return. I told them that they should reward the customers that are still shopping there (and putting up with the mess and disorder) with random give aways of gift certificates of $10 or $20. That would take the pain out of it. And by the way, has anyone won ANYTHING with that scratch off game they have going on? I sure haven't, but then I'm unlucky when it comes to lottery/raffel type things. Think I'm gonna be at Raley's from now on. (Maybe they should hire some of the Von's employees that have had their hours cut since they should have alot more business.)

I'll join the rant - was there yesterday and agree with Monkey - whadda MESS! Trying to get some fresh fruit was nutz. Couldn't pass in the 'aisles'- not room enough for two carts side by side...and the poor guys stocking...RIGHT in the WAY! And my irritation level was so high when someone asked me if I was finding everything - all I could say was 'Trying". I can't imagine anything they're adding is worth this aggravation and it's got to be costing a bundle. So are prices gonna rise too? Driving down to COSTCO and FoodMaxx really isn't that big a deal after all.

I won a Berry pie on my very first scratcher. Nothing since then. I am going to Raleys today because I cannot tolerate the cold in Von's the store. Seems way colder inside than outside. Plus the store is only half stocked to make the remodeling easier on them.

For what it's worth - Vons is not just picking on Oakhurst. The chain started a series of major remodels for most of its NorCal stores.
Been spending time in Mammoth and Bishop and both stores were a similar mess during their uprgades. But once completed - things look great.
The decor style seems to be along the Whole Foods look - wooden plank floors, mood lighting, etc.
And no - we haven't noticed any increase in prices.

I spoke with a few people who work there and they told me the prices will not be going up. We are just getting an updated more sophisticated look. I sure wish there was a way to warm it up in there while they are working!!! bbbuuuurrrr!

I finally figured it out! Shopping at Vons is like shopping in Northridge after the quake. Bad lighting, half of the shelves are empty, the floor has unexpected bumps & metal things sticking out and theres 'caution' tape all over the place.

I have some friends that moved back here from New Orleans last week. They said shopping at Vons is just like being in N.O.!

Reading the posts prior to going is a big help!! Specially those giving clues to the new and or temporary location of items or sections.
I didn't notice it being cold, but all the girls working seemed to be wearing light sweaters.
The only thing that seemed odd or bugged me at all were the isles containing both food and chemicals. Not on the same shelves, but say food on the left side of the isle and chemicals on the right side of the isle.
PS: Maple syrup is at the end of isle 19 on the right!! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/lol.gif

I found the maple syrup too!
I went in there this morning for a quick-run, meaning it was not my big once-a-week trip...I did have a hard time finding a few things and probably spent twice the time than I normally would, but at least it was only a few things! Lots of dust everywhere...I'd stay away from the fresh produce, unless it has an inedible skin.
