Jones Store (http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=11&n=4146533.99979568&e=280840.999912375&datum=nad83)is a little tiny store in the middle of everywhere. You can't call it nowhere, because if you are there, you are right where you should be. It's a little bit store, a little bit resturant (grill) and a nice place to take a break to. (John, don't call me on the misplaced adjective.) It's alot of history and just a nice place.

From Oakhurst, take Hwy 41 N to Rd 222, then 222 to Rd 274. (274 it the rd that goes straight where 222 turns Rt)( Past the fire station and Court on the left). Follow 274 for about 4 miles. Just after (about 300 ft) the turn to the Pines there is Beasore Rd on the left. Here's a map . The turn is LEFT at the M in Malum. http://mq-mapgend.websys.aol.com/?e=9&GetMapDirect=Gme5diw%2ca%3a9u12%3b%40%24x0%2dbl047 2%26%3d2nh%2d8sdw72%26y%405l68sd%40r%26h6aa0z%24xu r7n%26u2gu%2c2%3a9672%3b%40b20w%24%3a%26%40%24x0%2 dblqy72%26%3d2nh%2d80d072%26%40%24nq67%261%2c%2400 62%3a%26

I know where it is. They have great burgers, but I was wondering when they closed. I hope they finally got a new refrigerator. (you take your drinks outta one of the old refrigerators, amd when they're gone, they're gone...)
Check out the Location guide in the Places thread for some more cool places to go.

Jones' Store is an interesting place. There's no power there, just propane. They open when the snow clears and close some time in the fall...

There's lots of pretty country up Beasore Road. Well worth a drive; see Globe Rock and make the left turn that takes you over to Sky Ranch Road ...

Went to Jones Store today. Beautiful drive on a beautiful day! Only thing was the road went round and round and round and round http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/rolleyes2.gif We had hamburgers - really good! The people (storekeepers and visitors) were so very nice. It seemed like you were at your Grandma's place. VERY VERY COLD. Silly us - no one brought a sweater or anything.

Jones Store is just like visiting grandmas place, we also took a ride up there and had one of their great tasting burgers. Met the son and granddaughter and they showed us the pictures of what it looks like when the snow is there. Will definitly go back for another visit next summer.

Yes Sierra Lady I think it will have to be next year. They were talking about closing up in another 3 weeks. Question....If you keep going on Beasore Rd. do you eventually come out on to Sierra Sky Ranch? Also heard that there are great burgers at Central Camp and Mammoth Pools. (I got this info from my Harley buddies)!!

Not sure where you come out at on Beashore but I hear there is also another lake up there called Jackass Lake. Been to Mammoth Pools which is another pretty nice drive or ride have ever you go. But for sure will be up there again next summer. Still checking out different roads and ways to go myself.

You have to take a turn onto another forest service road (unpaved) to get there. It's on the opposite side of the road to the Chilkoot Lake turn off. Beasore loops way up and around to Mammoth Pool Res., Redinger Lake, and then to the booming metropolis of South Fork.

Follow the 'scenic loop' signs ... if you're going up Beasore, it's a left turn, then another left after a few miles to get onto Sky Ranch Road close to Kelty Meadow.

FYI - Wagner's Store at Mammoth Pool will close this Sunday (Sept. 18) for the season - so no tasty burgers from them until next Memorial Day.

Jones Store hopes to stay open for another 2 weeks - but that depends on the weather.

Ya know, I think I could really stand living up there during the winter when everything just shuts down. You batten down the hatches and live with nature (winter time) and are cut off from the outside world and just live. Am I crazy? Could I do it? Ya know, I don't know!

Some people could handle it, others not.
What would you do if you got seriously ill, and there was a snow storm. You would be entirely on your own.

Well, I am pretty healthy but if I did get seriously ill I would call Yosemite Wolf on my ham radio and she would come to my aid on a snow mobile bearing margaritas and a few other OF members and after she gave me medicine to cure my ailment we would have a great big party in the snow! Maybe we could even recruit Lois to cook up some burgers for us too! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/rofl5.gif

Once you turn on to Beasore...15 to 20 minutes...I think! I went last week, but we made a day of it, with lots of stops and side trips along the way. It seems tho-on the way back down w/o stops took all of 15 to 20 minutes. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

Now reason to hurry though, they are open from 8 am to 8 pm!! Be sure to check out the photographs on the wall...we hadn't laughed so hard in a long long time!! Many identify-able locals at a younger age!!

Well, I went and was not too impressed. Cheeseburger was way undercooked, so I just ate around the outside and tossed the rest away. Pretty neat location, overlooking the meadow. I'll give it another try sometime because I've heard so much good about it. Afterwards, we drove further up the road and found a cool spot to hang out by a creek for a couple of hours. All in all, a nice way to spend a day. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

I went up to the jones store a while back. I met the owner and talked with him a bit and I told him I was so hungry I could eat 3 burgers. He laughed and said " I bet I can eat more than you" I said your on. I ate 4 hamburgers and that is all I my stomach could handle, but he went on and ate 5 1/2 before he quite. The moral of this story is - Never try to keep up with the Jone'es LOL

Well this has something to do with Jones Store, as mentioned earlier in a post. That road leads way up into the mountains. If you follow it far enough, it'll stop at the top of a peak called Madera peak. Actually you'll be on Red Top Mountain, but you'll have an unbelievable view of Madera Peak, and you'll be at about 9000 foot, as I recall. That's when you get out of the jeep and start hiking. I've seen plenty of bears in this area, mountains, and canyons. Mountain Lions are there too. They walk the ridge in the morning. A good photographer would spend the night up there and wait for the sun to come up and take some pictures of the morning stalk...if they had a sharp eye. Between Red Rot and Madera Peak is a canyon with 3 rivers running through it, although it looks like only one from any point of view. Don't be fooled...that's a full day hike to Madera Peak from the end of Red Top's road there. Anyway, that canyon, running north, hits Sing Peak. From the top of Sing, you can see Red Peak and Triple Divide and Strawberry Lake, Jackass Lake's general area, Slab Lake, and the area where about 4 more small lakes with fish in them lay. Strawberry Lake is a day's hike. Triple Divide Peak is a day hike too, and I mean leaving at 4am and returning to Red Top after dark, and that's without stopping. I've been on top of all those peaks and it's beautiful. I think Triple Divide is...13K I think, or it might be 14.2K, I forgot which. Madera Peak is 10.5, I know that much. If you're good with a map, the coords to the end of the Red Top road are 37-32.767N, 119-24.175W. On that mountain are the remains of 3 cabins built by a guy named Teaford, or TFord, or TEford. Spelling varries, but there is still a wooden sign up there in front of one of them. Wonderful place to go hiking. Under NO conditions should anyone hike down in that canyon without a GPS. One night, many years ago, camping on the top of Madera Peak (yes, the top), I woke in the morning to the sound of distant gunshots. I walked over to the cliff that faces the canyon and could almost make out 2 people walking around the canyon's lake below. It's VerY high up there, and so people look smaller than ants from that vantage point. However, voices can carry for literally 10 miles up there, and I could hear them talking. They were Sheriffs officers on their day off. About an hour into target practice, they decided to go skinny dipping. True story. And from the top of the peak, I positioned my throw-away Kodak camera behind my throw-away binoculars and I prayed and clicked the camera, not knowing if I got *anything*, much less *something*. When I got it developed, I was amazed to find a somewhat blurry but defined set of men in the water, nude. Well, that's all I know about Jones Store http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif Except it a somewhat ethereal store, and in the day, it used to be the last, last, LAST, stop, before you made the peaks. I know of stories of emergencys and how they opened up the store for people in the middle of the night for those, and other things regarding that store. Excellent people...err.. women. They were 2 old women back then. Certainly they aren't around anymore. But bless them anyway when you pass the store, it has been a life saver for many people.

Have been trying to find this road on the map, because it sounds like a nice excursion for the Cruiser. I can find the end of a road on Red Top (matches your coordinates) but it appears to connect to the cross-over road that leaves Beasore Road at Globe Rock, via the Chiquito trailhead.

Is that what you mean? Or is there a connection that goes down to Jones Store but isn't on the USFS map (that wouldn't be hard to believe...)

I always enjoy digging through the map of that area, because I'm always surprised to find how close things are together that I think are very far apart (like just one side or the other of Fresno Dome)...

Thanks,
chris

Well, we drove up to Redtop today, via the Chiquito Pass trailhead. I should say that we drove up to the point where the road gets particularly steep, and then walked the rest of the way. Perfect weather, a nice outing. One of these years I'll walk from there to Gale and Sing and out via Chain Lakes and Chiquito Pass ... a long day, but should be good fun.

Jones Store has the totem pole covered in a tarp, so winter must be on the way.
