March 16, 2005 — Governor Schwarzenegger wants to clean up the state's air and is asking drivers to get rid of older cars.
The governor's program would give drivers $1,000 if they take cars 20 years or older to junkyards.
If those people want to keep their cars, the state will give them up to $500 to fix exhaust problems.
That money is part of the Department of Consumer Affairs budget.
"They make up only ten percent of all the cars that are on the road, but they're putting out more than 50% of the car pollution, which is totally unacceptable," says Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. "Therefore, I ask the people of California to get involved in our state program. I want to ask the people of California that we need your help, come together and bring in your old cars."
The smashed cars are then shredded and sold for scrap metal.
The governor hopes to get 15,000 older polluting cars off California roads this year.
