It's at the Best Western where Sandino's was. Italian and adding Mediterranean dishes in a few weeks. Big banner outside says "Under new ownership, new management, new crew" but when I went in last week, it was the exact same menu (they han't even changed the name on it) and when we asked, they were using the same recipes.

I ate there on tuesday 11-07-06 at 6:30p.m.
The sign in front now is red with white lettering "Amore Mio"
The interior is the same over stated tuscany, goddy Italian look. To much , to busy, for my taste, anyway.
The food was "C" to "B" quality, using the same Items that the previous , Velvet Rose had.
I wasn't real taken back, but I will say that the service was good and the food just fine. Hopfuly with time they will improve.
It's still a lot better than the Velvet Rose was http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/applause.gif.
I had two out of town guests from the big city and they enjoyed it, so it was a good night out http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/eusa_dance.gif.

I know a little about the "who". A couple Armenian brothers from Los Angeles. There are more brothers and more family members in the area...just several months ago they rented out the space behind Todd's BBQ (where the "Bit of Yarn" shop will soon be moving into). The brothers had a business called "Save-On Plumbing". The new plumbing business didn't last that long and I don't even know if they ever had a license to do business...they actually had work vans and everything, but there was something peculiar about it. Then we heard about them soon to be leaving and buying the Velvet Rose. So there ya have it. (At least some of it http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif).

Like all the restaurants here - gotta give them a try and a chance.
Restaurants have the number 1 failure rate of any business - its a tough thing to do and do right and people are fickle...
Knowing the amount Velvet Rose was asking for their business ($200k range) - but not knowing how much they wound up paying for it, and assuming the cost of the rent for a place that size, they've taken on a huge risk of their personal capital.
So - we'll be giving them a try in a week or so. We like supporting our local restaurants (I like having them around!)

I'm going to try them out too. I never once tried the Velvet Rose, so I have no comparisons to make. I hope the brothers do well...fortunately for them, they have plenty of capital to get themselves off the ground. I hope this is more their calling, than plumbing.

Well, that doesn't seem right does it? Where are they going to immediately get staffing? Seems like a dumb idea... I mean, why not get to know the staff, sort who is good, who isn't and move on... its got to be better than starting 100% with new people who haven't worked together before, they don't know, new dynamics...
Well, at least that's how I would start... but who knows what they have in mind. That isn't a good way to get a good reputation right off the bat.

I hear that two people kept their jobs. It may have been the two recently hired. I don't think any Velvet Rose employees are left, but not positive. I was shocked at how many people they had working at the place last weekend. There were a lot of familiar faces and a lot of family members of the new owners. Perhaps it will end up being a family run operation.

Did the restaurant just make an overnight transition with all the original staff in place? Did the previous owners train up the new ones or did they just walk away leaving the menu and it's recipes behind?

All very valid questions. I do know this much...one of my friends was a late hire and they had her coming in on New Menu Night and jumping in blind. Which is not always the proper thing to do. I do know my friend is most capable in the food service industry, and both of us felt nervous for her. It has nothing to do with how the table is greeted and attended to; that is fairly universal.
The problems come from not knowing where all needed server items are located in the building and the other biggie...knowing how to work the computer system. The Velvet Rose put in a nice, close to state of the art system...that I am guessing is still in place, but whether they are using it or not....
A third minor issue is being able to recognize each dish on sight. With a brand new menu, and servers coming blind, no one had a chance to see how each dish is prepared and garnished.

My last visit to Sweet Water was great. The service was much better and she had 8 of us.

I'm one of the new bartenders there, and was there one of the "Grand Opening" nights...the food so far is amazing, especially the Armenian dishes....I know they let a lot of people go, but we hope to make it more family friendly, more live music and a BIG bar. We have ordered a lot of new Vodkas and specialty tequilas. I hope you guys will come in and give it a try!
My normal nights are Thurs-Saturday night...and the other 2 bartenders are really great too! We'll get the kinks worked out, having opened new places before, it just takes time! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/yes.gif

I am glad to read your post mermomma and hope the new job is treating you well. I am concerned about a few things with the new owners. For one I saw minors in the bar. Not just under 21 I'm talking under 18. Second I am concerned for the employees there. I hope for your sake that you are treated well by the new owners and I hope they dont make a habit of changing the entire staff. And last, the drink prices are way too high. Why go to your bar and pay $5.50 a shot when I can get the same drink for half the price at the Oak Room? If your prices can be more reasonable I think a lot more people would be willing to drink there instead of the Oak Room. I checked out the new place and didn't stay long. I'll give it another try but like I said before the prices are too high if you expect it to be a locals hang out. For tourists it is fine but that isnt going to get you by in the winter. You will need locals to support you.

There are times its nice to just have a "quieter" place than the Pines or Oakroom to sit and drink - and then there are times to go let your hair down and party!
I won't purposely seek out a quiet bar and pay more, unless I'm entertaining clients or have friends we are meeting. But that's true of any bar - I don't just go to drink. I go to socialize, dance, etc. The drinks are just part of the evening out.

I think that anyone that works all week should be able to blow that paycheck however they want to. But that's just me. As far as the fighting goes, I agree with you. But I have seen more fights at the "Rose" than anywhere else. They had a creepy guy in there when I was there and he was causing problems with everyone in the bar. The manager's solution was to sit him down and give him pretzels. I would have kicked his *** out. But anyway I am sure it will take some time for the new managers and employees to figure things out and realize who the trouble makers are.

Guess it all depends on how you want to spend you weekend off... sat at a nice bar with good music... drinking a martini or a good bottle of champers.. or dancing and bouncing at the OakRoom..... theres a place for all.......

We went there recently & had a really good dinner. The wine list was nice, the atmosphere has improved since the previous restaurant & the service was great. (the only exception was they need another busser to keep the meal flowing)
The Filets we chose were exceptional, I was amazed how good they were. The menu had lots of choices I haven't seen up here before. I can't wait to go back & try some of the other items.

I think the Sequoia Brewing Company gigs are worth the trip to Fresno. Never had a bad meal there, I hear the MotoBrew is awesome, and since it's a dinner place, all ages can go.
But that doesn't mean I want to take away from this restaurant. We're looking forward to trying it soon ourselves.

I think there is probably room for both a few of the better chain restaurants and the unique, hole-in-the-wall family-owned ones up here. If we are gonna have chain eateries in Oakydoke, I'd rather have Red Lobster or Chili's than Choke-in-the-Box, etc.
I don't normally get a chance to go dining out when in Fres-hole. Most of the time I have spent all day down there, running around and I have a car full of groceries to put away. I would dine out more if it could be a local trip...except for the diet I'm on!

I haven't been to the local Jamba Juice, but perhaps I will wander in eventually. I have been to the one in River Park several times, but didn't like all the damn noise. I could hardly hear the person at the counter talking to me because of the large bank of loud blenders all whirring and screeching. Geez -- that is irritating. Hurts my ears! I haven't felt an urge to turn and run like that since the time I had to go to a Chuck E. Cheese kid's party.
(Even my son wanted to get out of there!)
To veer back toward the topic here, I dunno if I will venture into the new restaurant or not. I didn't even know that Sandino's was gone! I don't get around much, to put it mildly. I stay in my crypt most of the time.

So we've been tweaking it a little bit, and we have live music in the dining room tonight and a DJ in the bar tomorrow night. We are courting a different clientele, as I hear there were fights and problems in the past in the bar.
Last weekend was nice, we had a good crowd, no rowdies, no complaints about drink prices. The prices are higher to kind of keep the "power yaeger/redbull" drinkers out, and invite the people who want a good martini or a really nice snifter of rare brandy. We do also have lots of specialty drinks, 49 kinds of tequila...
As for the kids in the bar, we allow them as we serve food in there, under 21 is allowed, unless food service is over, then it's only a bar and then no under 21.
I've bartended at Road houses, country clubs and upscale places, if people complain that the beer is $3, instead of $2.50 like across the street, feel free to go back across the street. I am just the bartender, I have no power to change the prices, and I really dont want to hear it all night long about how expensive our drinks are. Go anywhere else besides the Oak room or wherever, in LA in Fresno..in ANY other bar that's not a saloon and then tell me that our drinks are expensive...
A martini in any club in Vegas or Los Angeles is $10-$15...I know Oakhurst is no Vegas, but the point is that we have to make some money back here!
I moved here from Mammoth Lakes, mountain ski town, and worked there and in Bishop...small mountain town as well...drinks are $5 for well, and $8 for top shelf. None of the locals (well, except the golf course old ladies, who want their white zin in a syrofoam cup with ice)even batted an eyelash at the prices.
At Amore Mio, we are carrying probably the best specialty Vodka, Tequila and liquor selection in the area...and of you want to come out and try some of the selection...there is something for everyone, but no..it's not going to be $2.50.
So come on out ans check it out! I have enjoyed working there very much so far!

It was verrrrrrry cool to have Monkey along - and Summer for a brief stint. Though, you two have REALLY got to loosen up a bit. All-in-all wound up with 11 of us there with Summer and her hubby and friends which as the evening wore on dwindled to 6 of us braving the house/hip-hop/rap music... YW, Messy, Dodge, Sheila, Monkey and I.
Was a fun night.
BGW -you're right, the pole is gone
The pool table is free play now. (Don't put money down on the table with Sheila - I think she's a shark in hiding!)
And... I had 4 drinks (with brand labels) for $18 - I don't think that is overpriced at all.
Thanks Summer for dropping in and bringing your hubby and friends and Monkey for joining in.

I did a quick scan through the archives and we haven't heard much if anything about Amore Mio since Mermamma went back to school. Does anyone still go there? Are they still offering entertainment?
Has anyone other than me seen their commercial? And, if so...is it just me or is this one of the most poorly done local commercials to date?
There is no music, no voice over tempting you to stop by. Just action shots of people eating and the hum and grind of the kitchen taking over the entire 30 seconds or so. It's not even that the bartender has been told to behave instead of act natural.
Did/has anyone else noticed that the waiter sprinkles a huge handfull of parm. cheese on a guest's pasta dish and the chef is shown dumping a handfull of cheese into a skillet of something on the stove? Neither are wearing gloves...which I am sure would make for an even more tacky commercial.
This is so wrong on so many levels, but to include this behavior in a commercial...disgusting (IMHO). If your food server ever does this to you or someone else in your party...refuse the food, and leave!
That the commercial hasn't been editted as of yet is a bit odd to me as well.

hmmm...Interesting, I haven't seen the commercial, but it does sound pretty tacky. I have eaten there a few times, the food was great and the service was pretty good. But the food was great! Just wanted to say that again. hehehe
I loved the vegitarian dishes they had, I also loved the fettucine and my friend loved the steak, which I haven't had myself yet, but plan to.
What channel was the commercial on? Maybe someone should let them know how terrible it is. lol

Our party of four had dinner at Amore Mio tonight. We had: Chicken Marsala, Pork Chops, Filet Mignon, and Lamb. Everyone enjoyed the dinner and said the food was exdellent. The service was great too! I think they have their act together now. We plan to be regular customers.

Family went there last weekend and thought it was awful. I heard a rumor that they went out of business this weekend.

I always love it when Armenian, or orther than "Italians" open an Italian restaurant. LOL, Although we had some Greeks who had an Italian Restaurant here & the food was great. I'll have to wait till I come up & try it, or find out from my Daughter Mysteefied, before I could know if It's really good Italian food. Hummmmm will be interesting to hear.
