I went to the dr today because I have had a lump under my chin for the past few weeks. Come to find out, it looks like a clogged submental or sublingual gland under my tongue. Has anyone had this before? I am waiting for a referral to an ENT dr in Fresno so I can find out exactly what is going on. I normally don't have anything like this happen to me so I am a little freaked out on what it may be. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/worried.gif

My grandmother had a tumor in her parodit (?)gland...it's one of the salivary glands near the jaw bone. Hers was cancerous...which we believed was caused by a skin cancer in the same area that was not successfully removed in total. It was really bad for her...and ultimately led to her death last year..she was 87. This in no way has anything to do with you and I'm not trying to get you nervous. Just the opposite. My grandmother's diagnosis is why when we were researching all this, we came to find out that cancerous tumors in the salivary glands are not common; however, benign tumors (like cysts) are common in these glands. So relax. It's probably nothing...and it's probably removeable or something you can just live with.

I was freakin' when I discovered a dark brown spot on my iris...thought it might be an eye cancer and saw some really scary images. But was thrilled to death when my opthalmological appt (my first and only)discovered it was just a harmless nevus (aka eye freckle). And my eyesight is 20/15 which is considered excellent. Good news!

Don't worry!

I forgot to ask, is the lump you feel sore?

Ahhhhhh....that makes me stress more. I have been reading up on it too and I keep seeing "tumor" and "cancer". The gland under my tongue, that lines my jawbone is swolen and sore to the touch. The lump under my chin isn't sore but when I lift my head you can totally see it sticking out. I better keep my nerves under control until I get my referral. I am gonna turn 40 next month, I hope this isn't the beginning of something not so good. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/cry.gif

If it's sore to the touch, maybe it's just an abscess-type lump causing the clogged duct...that can happen with other glandular ducts (like tear ducts). Maybe it'll go away on it's own, or maybe you need an antibiotic. Sometimes abscesses just peak after 3-4 days and then gradually go away.
