Black. I remember chewing on aniset weeds (I think that's what they were called) when I was living in Sacramento and would go to the American River as a kid.

OK...the only real licorice is the black....the anisette weed..the anice seeds. That being said, I like black licorice just fine, but red... now red is a thing of beauty. A treat unsurpassed in the cheap candy category.
Just one question.
What flavor is red?

I always pick out all the black jelly beans before anyone else gets them. I remember buying bags of just black jelly beans - do they still them like that? (I guess I really don't get out much)

Looks like it, Mat. I onlu like the red. I used to like to take a bite out of each end and drink a 7up through it like it's a straw.

strawberry
Ya think?? They make strawberry twizzlers too. Theres red, black, and strawberry.
Is the concensus that red vines are strawberry?
Next we try to figure out what flavor a circus peanut is. Those vaugely orange colored candies.

I always thought that red licorice was cherry. I did see the strawberry twizzers today at vons. but i like the cherry flavour bestest.

I'm not sure what flavor they're supposed to be, but they've been around for a while - in 1964 some guy (I wish I could remember his name, because he was truly inspired) added cut up pieces of circus peanuts to Cheerios, and Lucky Charms were born! (and they're still magically delicious!

Which kind of implies that it's NOT licorice.

Which is it, licorice or cherry?
licorice : US spelling of liquorice
liquorice : 1 a sweet, chewy, aromatic black substance made from the juice of a root and used as a sweet and in medicine.2a leguminous plant from which liquorice is obtained. [genus Glycyrrhiza; many species]
Maybe I'm just missing it, but I'm not seeing any reference to 'cherry'...
There is NO SUCH THING as red licorice, if it's RED, it ISN'T licorice by definition.

black licorice... or REAL licorice has a nasty aftertaste in the mouth. the cherry vines taste better http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif. Never tried to red vine straw with a soda tho.

I like both kinds, but if the black kind is a really good brand, I prefer that. There is a brand called American Licorice that is really good, and also a type from Australia that is REALLY good. It is very rich and tender. I have purchased it at Casa de Fruta.
I don't care much for those Twizzlers cherry flavor because they taste too artificial, but Red Vines and Red Ropes are great. Gotta watch out for that black stuff, though ... it's a laxative!
Oh, about black jelly beans (some call them babies). I always picked those out, too, or bought bags of jelly beans that were all black. Yum! Except, I don't care for cheap-o "jelly babies." I would walk off a cliff for Jelly Bellies, though. Especially the caramel apple, buttered popcorn, buttered toast, toasted marshmallow, juicy pear and cantaloupe. Oh, and raspberry! Help, stop me!

If the two of us were locked in a room with a bag of Jelly Bellies I'm afraid there would be a fight http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

Sounds like the two of you need tomake a run to the Jelly Belly factory!!
There is nothing like discount Jelly Bellies. They sell the 3 and/or 5 pound bags of 'seconds' real cheap. Something like 3 bags for $12. Plus all the free samples you can eat!
I guess the next question is vine or shoelace?

The black licorice is nasty. And the red licorice is the best, in my opinion.
