Okay I just want to know why does a movie place
show on a friday nite there last show at 7:15 or 7:45at night? My husband comes home and wants to take the kids and me out to the movies and we come here to get the link to the web site and it showing those two last times? what the heck is that BS? I don't understand that? Then we go to Me n Eds pizza (which there is another place going down hill) and my husband walks over to talk to the people and there is a guy standing there and my husband was knocking on the window to talk to him and he wouldn't even turn around and say anything just flippin stood there...
What kinda crap is that? Well One thing I do know I will not go there ever. I will make a night of it and have my husband take us to fresno. I won't give them my money. I totally think that is a bunch of crap.
the more I write the more I am getting pissed. I just don't get it.
whatever I guess they dont need the money that back and the support from there locals either...

I understand your frustration, but maybe you're being a little too hard on a small-town "Mom-n-Pop" movie theater. And a Mom-n-Pop run franchise pizza place. This is not Fresno...this is Oakhurst, a sleepy little town...the place shuts down at dark with the exception of a few local drinking holes and dive bars.

I'm sure both the Met Cinema and Me'n Ed's would stay open later and serve up more shows and more pizza if the locals did come. Not for just one family or two who arrive on a whim or on an infrequent basis. I'm sure they've weighed the cost of being open later with the revenue it brings in...and it's probably not worth it. If there were way more people like you every Friday night, they'd probably be happy to be open late.

So, yes, you should probably go to Fresno for a movie if you're not happy...but I will continue to support our local cinema and pizza place. Their business hours work just fine with me.

The power it takes to run the lights and the Projector is why they dont have Late shows in the Winter.
After school starts they get an average of 10 people per late movie and that is not enough to pay for overhead at the small % per head the get off each ticket.

I understand if its not really beneficial to them why they would choose to have less hours. Its a seasonal town, right? But youd also think that businesses would want to keep up with the growing needs of a growing community. My families schedule doesnt work with most Oakhurst entertainment either Michele. We like to go down to the theater in River Park late on weeknights. We are almost always the only people in those huge rooms, plus theres ice cream in Fresno http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

I also wish places stayed open later in this town... at least on Friday and Saturday night. I'm a night owl. I love the Met, though. Fresno is too far and too expensive for a movie. I just try to see movies during the day when there are not too many people.

Why don't all you night owls open an all-night stop for dining and entertainment?

Let's see how much business you get and who's going to be working the late shift.... http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

You want it, but would *you* be willing to do it? I wouldn't. Definately not in Oakhurst.

They have late shows in the summer I think. I don't stay out late anyway, and my kids are too young to see movies past 7pm, their bedtime is at 8-830. Me and Ed's has always been good to me, except when three times in a row after I specifically asked for thick crust they gave me thin crust pizza... oh and they hardly ever have delivery which makes me crazy! No, I don't want to come into town with three (four!) kids and get a pizza in a place that my kids know has an arcade.. yikes!!

As far as the Met goes.. love it. Love the owners, and the prices and the icees. The only thing that bothers me about the Met is the big old beautiful tree they tore down to build the Met Too. But that is old news...

Really, if you want to see a movie later at night, now you know you must plan ahead and go to Fresno. And plan to eat someplace other than Me and Ed's.. I hear McDonalds is open until 11, and Jack in the Box is nearly all night.

My N Eds hours are not what i was talking about it is the service that is gone down hill. but whatever.
the met well I am not asking to show movies till midnite but the last show be at 7:15 - 7:45 at night good gosh show a movie on friday and sat night like 8 or 9 or 9:30 that isn't to much to ask and when someone is knocking on the window to ask a question you just stand there and ignore them. This little late night town of Oakhurst as grown since i first moved here and I think they should at least try something .
for the person who asked about a open a late night place for food and shows ..YEP I would do it. and I would work it. if it was a place for kids to go to and eat and hang out and have something to do other then hang in the parking lots of fast foods and keep them out of trouble you bet i would do that. It is better then seeing drug deals going on in parking lots and walking the streets.
but that is just me It isn't asking to stay open late 7 days a week at the movies but have either a friday or sat night late shows. for the people who do like going late or whatever. I do my share in supporting our local place trust me. I would rather go to Oakhurst to spend my money and the local places support our football league for high school and our youth football so yeah I am not shy in supporting them but I never heard of a movie theater shut down that late. but that is me.....

If you people want Big city.
then move back to the big city.
If the town was up all night we would have the same crime as Fresno.
Have you seen the NEWS someone gets shot EVERYDAY.
Some places have tryed the 24 hours even the fast food but it did not last.
Even some of the gas Stations that where 24 hours are not. Just not enough people up late.

WEll I don't think having one night friday or Sat nights run movies a little later is going to put our little town in crime infested place..
heck they can't even solve the few murders we have had anyways. the drug scene is bad enough and drinking problem anyways...hell i wouldn't mind seing the bars close early and the movie place show late movies on fridays or sats...

but that is me

I'm no fan of the Sheriff's office up here, but it does seem to me that they have solved a few murders up here.

And if you want a late night movie, there's always renting something to watch at home from Blockbuster. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif

With the cost of heating up here, I don't blame them for not wanting to stay open later during the winter.

Michelle
Sep 27, 2006, 01:51 AM
Well We rent from blockbuster all the time. and with so much going on and my surgery and football we wanted to treat the kids to a movie, you know go grab something and walk over and see a 9:00 - 9:30 movie .. family thing. is all.....

but whatever.....

We have 3 Late shows showing on Friday and Saturday night. Starting this weekend.
www.metcinema.com (http://www.metcinema.com)
85% of the time they do have Late weekend shows in the winter.
But Rusty and Sara where out of town the last few weeks so they did not have late shows.

In the summer they try to show Late shows EVERY DAY for most Flicks that have the Followers.

I don't want the met to stay open later. That would jack the prices up for the very few people who go to the late shows. If they keep the place open that costs money. And who's going to pay for it. Not the few people that go to the 10pm show but all of us.

I say plan your day ahead and hit the last show.

Michelle

Thank you for letting me know about the late showing.. I wouldn't think when the winter hits they would have late shows due to the weather and that is understandable. but you know once in awhile would be great.

that is all i am saying....

thanks for the info though http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

I hadn't commented when this thread started because I didn't want to come off as smart aleck, but it's my humble opinion...if you've been around these parts awhile and just realized within the last week you can't see a movie any later than 7:30ish it seems to me your patronage isn't among the consistent kind influential for the establishment owners. I consider it a convenience for the met to even be here.

As for me...I'd like a full serve fabric/craft shop open past 6pm, 7 days a week. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif

Michelle
Sep 28, 2006, 07:17 AM
first of all let me state that I can NOT afford to take four kids and two adults to the movie all the time to do so. So being it was a treat (to say the least) to head out to the movies. When we did go it was on a sunday...Like I stated before Blockbuster is where we go to watch movies...

I guess to figure a MOVIE theater would have a show around 8:00 or 9:00 must be out of this world to figure.

and if the owners don't think my patronage isn't among the consistent kind influential for the establishment owners I will plan instead of suprise my kids and go to Fresno. It doesn't matter to me.

And NO I DID NOT JUST FIGURE that out thank you. I new the last time we did want to go they weren't showing the certain movie past 7:30 which was last summer or so.And to knock on a window while a person(worker) was standing there ignoring my husband to ask a question maybe they don't need my money.
not much a convience if they ignore people if you ask me...

I think there was a bit of sarcasm involved in the previous answer Michelle. Really though, when you start a thread insulting a local business (that most people in the area are grateful for, and the owners are really nice genuine people) you are bound to get answers like the ones you received.

We used to own Round Table Pizza and the first few years we did stay open until 11 or 12 on weekends and 10 during the week but when Sierra Online moved and the other software company we stopped getting people coming in. Then the Casino opened up and cut our business even more. It is just hard to stay open after 8pm anymore up here even on weekends, just not enough business.

We have gone to the met on a Thursday to the late show at 7ish and were the only ones watching the movie. Nice for us but not for the owners.

If any one has been watching most of the Mom & Pop Restaurants up here have either sold or are for sale, since the Casino opened up.

oakhurstleaf
Sep 29, 2006, 11:32 AM
I don't think the casino's restaurants have swallowed up a lot of the local restaurant business...however, they have absorbed a lot of the restaurant employees...probably the better employees at that (cooks/kitchen/service). So I think good restaurant help is harder to come by...and some restaurants suffer for that. Especially those that aren't run by the owners or their family or run well being solely reliant on inconsistent outside help. Also there are almost too many restaurants here for the local population and some are in very poor locations, besides have poor reputations... some just cannot do well enough to stick it out for the long haul.

There's just not enough disposable income to go around to where every restaurant is doing well or making enough money to where it's worth it. That's why I think a lot of restaurants are for sale or have sold...or often just left behind in the dust. It amazes me what basically failing (or breaking even) restaurants are asking for their businesses....businesses that make no money wanting $300,000 or more. Just for the business and it's lease. Crazy.

I have talked to the met before and it is not that they don't want to work late or show late shows all the time but like Mona Vie the Mom and Pop stores just can not make it up here if they say open and they don't have enough people coming in to pay the bills. I think if the Met stayed open late all the time they would have to charge more for tickets and food to help them pay the bills. There are a lot of mountain folk up here that can not afford to spend a lot of money to go out to the movies for entertainment. I have been so greatful that Rusty and Sara go out of there way to bring in good entertainment and not charge us city prices to go and see a movie and buy there food. They have that oppertunity to do that since they are the only movie place in town they could just raise the price and tell customers that is the way it is but they have been so nice to everyone to keep the prices as low as they can and still survive. Coming from Mariposa where it is very nice there and lots of friends and family but there is no Movie place there and I did not see a movie until I was 15 years old. My cousin brought me over as a treat and so now that I live over here in Ahwahnee I am so greatful to have a Movie place here in Oakhurst.

The Met is 20 this year.
before that we had The Pines
they showed movies that where out 4 weeks before they had it. and only had 1 movie a week for 3 shows. Had to put up with smoke. Bad seats and the film burning up at least once a week and waiting for them to splice it back.

I'm glad the Met is here in town.

How many small towns like Oakhurst have so much as we do? The bowling alley, theatre, "department" store, so many different restaurant choices...

I feel fortunate we have so much in such a small town! And I'll take them at whatever hours the business owner determines that it makes fiscal sense.

At risk of repeating something oft said on this board, the majority of us moved here for a different lifestyle from what we lived in the bigger cities. And we accepted that one of the changes would be that somethings would be very different from what we had in our old lives, i.e. stores not open as late, smaller selection to shop at, slower life style (everyone talks about mountain time, and it applies to how we live our lives as well as what kind of service we get). Anyway, knowing all that, WHY do some people insist on continual complaints because the slower/not as grand life style fails to measure up to the places they used to live???????? Of course it doesn't, so why do we want to drag that life style up here and turn this town into another FRESNO or other city from the valley????? If people don't like the limitations this town has, why stay, why complain?????? Remember, with big city ways, comes more big city crime and I don't want to live in that environment anymore. Just sayin', not trolling, not trying to start a fight, just trying to get people to think about the contradictions in some of these topics.

I agree, Ironhorse.

And to some who've lived here for 20 yrs or more...Oakhurst has grown too much and become too crowded, in their opinions. Just today when I was getting my hair trimmed, an older woman was talking about how much Oakhurst has changed and grown since she moved here 36 yrs ago. A couple weeks ago, I talked to a man who bought his house and property for $40,000 twenty years ago, and was shocked at what homes in his neighborhood were asking ($500,000 and up)...he told me he wants to sell off and go to Mexico. He thinks Oakhurst has become too crowded and busy for him.

Oakhurst isn't as po' dunk as some small towns...I can't help but think of Delano. Or Pixley. Little town road-stops. Oakhurst looks like New York City by comparison.

Yes, I came from the big city or the place where every big city ran together you couldn't tell when you were leaving one and entering another. I prefer the simpler life here and it's probably a good thing I don't have the convenience of shopping at Target whenever I darn well please (well, I could go on-line) because I'd be there too much...

We've got the best of both worlds here. Not far from the big city for big city stuff...but far enough to feel like your world's away from the crime and fast-pace. I think it's better the difference between here and there remains wide.

Yosemite_Wolf
Oct 02, 2006, 05:23 PM
Yeah.. living up here you learn to do one BIG shopping trip and buy all the foodstuff etc that you need... thank goodness for Costco and Sams Club in Fresno! I think that the ppl who moved here from big cities are the ones who mostly want to keep Oaky a small city... and you cant blame the younger ones for wanting what the big cities have..... skate parks, big malls etc etc.... blame TV such as OC and Laguna Beach etc etc for giving these kids big city desires. No worries... they will move away, grow up, get job skills etc and eventually move back as small town loving adults.

Something else to keep in mind is that not everyone keeps the same hours. My husband happens to work a strange shift, and we tend to be out late at night. We dont complain that Oakhurst doesnt have anything to offer us at that time. We simply go to Fresno where the service is offered on our time. We live here because we do love the area and everything else that it offers. I dont think its really all that uncommon.

I lived in Oakhurst, and never had any peace, with people coming and going at all hours all around me, many of them returning home drunk or high and rowdy. It felt like I was living in the middle of the Las Vegas strip. I'd get up in the morning and pick up all their garbage on the way to my car. Parking in the Vons or Raleys centers, and trying to get in and out of businesses on Highway 41, felt like I was taking my life in my hands. I tried walking around town, but with no crosswalks and limited sidewalks, I felt like a deer in the road, running to make it to a safe spot and hoping I didn't get struck down. I used to go walking through the park and on the trail up to 426 every morning, but the homeless guys living in the bushes by the creek ended that little pleasure. And forget walking through the park after work--very creepy. I can't count how many times I saw the police taking someone in down the street. A neighbor and I found razor blades under our tires one morning, and I know of two vehicles that were stolen from neighbors. The worst murder I ever heard of happened to a child about a quarter of a mile from where I lived. I had to call the police twice to intervene in horrible domestic violence incidents with two different couples. The piece de resistance was a bullet coming through my wall, shot off "accidentally" by a young man who told the police he wasn't familiar with his new gun, but needed to clean it. So I did the unthinkable. I moved to Fresno. And now I sleep at night. It's quiet here.

By the way, one of the very few things I miss about Oakhurst is the Met.

Remember... Oakhurst is a city.... not a town. It just hasnt been "incorporated" but it is for the most part ow a city. (sad thought). It may be a mountain town but houses are still close together etc etc (though there are some areas that are open). I may live closer to Fresno in YLP... but it is very quiet here..... even living on the parkway. But no matter where you live in the mountains.. rejoice in the mountains and love it.

Yes - I can see where your experiences of Oakhurst were none-to-pleasant.

We've lived 3 years in Coarsegold and are totally pleased - quiet, great neighbors, neighborhood doesn't have sidewalks, but the entire neighborhood has 10 miles of roads and the shoulders are nicely graded and the majority of homeowners have left their fencing where it should be, out of the road easement (even though no asphalt yet exists on the shoulders, just where the roads are in the center), so there is plenty of room (about 15 feet) to walk or ride horses.

Our neighbors all look out for each other and if you come up our street without them knowing who you are, well... we all give good stink eye and watch you closely.

Maybe it was the particular area you were living in - sounds like smack "downtown" Oakhurst where there are a lot of apartments and I've seen idiot "young-ones" skid their tires coming around corners, kicking up dust, hoot and holler, etc in that area.

Bummer.
