George Strait performed Friday, Feb. 3 at the Save Mart Center in Fresno with his special guests Tracy Lawrence and country newcomer Miranda Lambert.
Strait has many fans in the mountains. Mountain Area residents and Strait fans Mary Greene, Anette Poplarchick, Tammi Kudra and Devon Perry bought their tickets to the Strait concert early.
Perry is a member of Strait's fan club and had access to pre-sale tickets before the regular tickets went on sale.
The four women, who met chatting on Oakhurst Online (www.oakhurstonline.com), met at Kudra's house and carpooled down to Fresno in Poplarchick's vehicle.
The group had dinner at the World Sports Cafe before the show.
Traffic was backed up on Shaw Avenue before the concert and the ladies found themselves running a bit late and missing part of Lambert's performance.
"We saw George Strait's bus pull into the Save Mart Center," Kudra said. "We were in line for drinks when Miranda Lambert was playing. We did hear her play while we were in line though. Tracy Lawrence was fantastic and George was incredible."
Greene said the group enjoyed themselves despite a mix-up with their seats, which were on the first row of the riser level.
"We got to our seats and one seat wasn't there," she said. "The seat was actually missing. After much confusion with the staff, they finally brought in another seat and we were able to sit down when George Strait walked onto the stage."
A fan from way back, Greene said she saw Strait perform in Los Angeles when he was at the beginning his career.
"I saw George play when he first started out," she said. "He performed at the Palomino in L.A. and he was great. I did like the format of the Save Mart Center stage where there were four microphones on each side of the stage so everyone could see him."
Strait was born and raised in Texas, the son of a junior high school teacher who also owned and operated a ranch that had been in the Strait family for nearly 100 years.
He began playing music as a teenager, joining a rock & roll garage band.
After his high-school graduation in the late '60s, Strait enrolled in college but soon dropped out and eloped with his high school sweetheart, Norma.
In 1971, Strait enlisted in the Army. He left the Army in 1975, returning to Texas with the intention of completing his education.
He enrolled in Southwest Texas State University at San Marcos, where he studied agriculture. While he was studying, he formed his own country band, Ace in the Hole.
Strait went solo and earned his number one song, "Fool Hearted Memory" in early 1982. He recently earned his 52nd hit with, "She Let Herself Go."
The song reached number one on the Radio and Records chart last month and remained at that position for a second straight week in Billboard Magazine.
Strait has scored more number one songs than any other single artist in history and has sold more than 62 million records in the meantime amassing 28 platinum or multi-platinum discs, which is more than any other country artist.
The Save Mart Center performance was top notch. Strait is a soft-spoken performer who doesn't interact with the crowd much, preferring to give the fans what they want — music.
His quiet, gentlemanly manner won hearts during the performance.
"George is still beautiful," Kudra said. "We had such a good time. The money we spent was worth it and we'll book our tickets early the next time George is in town."
Safe to say, his music continues Strait to the top.http://www.sierrastar.com/columnists/kescoto/story/11785780p-12504575c.html
