I prefer Raley's. They're nicer, in a more genuine way to me. They always help me find things (in case ya didn't know, i can be kind of a dingbat, especially in the grocery store!), order things or give me rain checks. I also like the store environment, it just feels better to me.
I think i decided i was sticking with Raley's when ColdWolf's daughter and i were making her wedding invitations. We couldn't find any ribbon after going to several places. We ended up at Raley's and decided to ask if they had any. After search attempts were unsuccessful, a manager got some out of the florist drawer, put a dramatically reduced price tag on it and gave it to us to take to the front. Nicest thing ever!

Raleys. It's a nicer store, in my opinion. The produce department is much better than Von's. It's more expensive but I don't mind paying for better quality produce.
I do think the sandwiches are better at Von's though and I love Starbucks.

I voted for both. I buy my meat and deli at vons. If there having a good sale on things I want I'll buy there.
Then I head over to Raleys. great produce, they have perogies and turkey pastrami. I like the over all feel of the store. My bro works there, but the parking is awful. So I park further back.
Always 2 pizza Friday at vons. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/hungry.gif

I shop at Vons for Price Raleys for selection/quality of produce.
Today I shopped at Vons and with club card savings saved 39% plus I get an additional .03 off gas on top of the normal .03 off next time I fill up. I think I will take the silverrado on empty and tow the boat and fill it. That should total about 90 gallons worth. LOL

Holy crap that is a lot of gas! My VW is a 14.5 gallon tank and I think the Audi is 16 gallons and to me they are huge!
The cool thing about Vons is the buy seven get one free deli sandwiches and the same for Starbucks. I also have a Rudy's card for coffee but I keep losing it so really I have like four half finished cards.

You may not want that gas to sit in your boat for months... old gas is not too good. My waverunner runs like crap on old gas. But you could take some gas cans to fill up your cars. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/idea3.gif ...and have KK follow you with her car. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/idea3.gif
I just got one of those gas discounts myself... just waiting for my tank to run dry to take advantage of it. If it were spring, I'd pull the waverunner behind and fill that up. I'm sure I'll get another discount before that, though.
TOT
Dec 15, 2004, 01:53 PM
unless i'm doing the math wrong, you'd be saving about $5 filling up 90 gallons with six cent discount....
shansard
Dec 15, 2004, 02:02 PM
That's still five dollars in savings!
You know what really gets me? The crowds that flock to the no sales tax "sales". Really, the discount is only like 7.75% or whatever the sales tax is up here. Try having a 10% off sale, see how many people show up for THAT. The answer: not many.

I usually prefer to shop Raleys, I like thier meat so much more than Vons, too many times have gotten bad meat at Vons, and there have been many times at Vons where I am in the middle of shopping and realize they don't have half of whats on my list.
HOWEVER, I do prefer Vons produce, I think its healthier looking, and fresher tasting to me.

Raley's is better in most respects except price IMO.
I think the Java City cafe is better than the hole-in-the-wall Starbucks at Vons http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/yes.gif
Vons has a better selection of frozen entree's... (my cooking consists of killing and grilling,http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/hungry.gif being a bachelor and all)
My biggest pet peeve next to waiting in their slow checkout lines is finding out they closed the entrance on the Long's side late nights and I have already parked/walked from the post office...

I enjoy the Raleys experience much better than Vons. But ;
Vons has best Meat (Ranchers Choice) money back if your not satisfied.
Deli has best Quality meats and cheeses along with a soup bar thats great
Got the Wells Fargo from Raleys in Vons now.
Starbucks is a wait and cold area to drink in.
Bakery has a manager that won't be second to anybody and his workers do a great job.
Vons gas is fair priced and .03 cents a gallon off with club card.
7th sandwich purchase is free..
7th starbucks drink is free..
Shopping carts don't roll down hill outside.
Vons is open on holidays and from 5am to 12midnight.
for me Raleys 25% of my time and Vons 75% of my time. That club card saves you $$$$

I agree with you Keith, I also like Vons better, but Wells Fargo has always been in both Vons and Raley's. WF corporate made an error because of the sides of Hwy 49. WF in Raley's was considered Northern California, while the WF in Vons was considered central California. When WF corp. finally figured that out, they decided to close down the Raley's one. Which was funny, because sometimes I'd see the same tellers working in both stores.

You don't have to tell the cashier your phone number, you just enter it into the little card swipey thing for your discount.
I shop at both, depends on where else I have to go that day and what is on sale at which store. Both stores have great staff, but sometimes it makes me crazy when I'm at Vons, just trying to pick up an item or two and EVERY employee says hello and asks me how I am and if they can help with anything. I know they are just trying to be nice, but when I'm on a mission or sick http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/freak.gif, don't get in my way!!!!

the reason why they ask you that is because they HAVE TO...they have to make sure you are not the mistery shopper... they have points they have to keep the store up if they fall below then they are in trouble... being in the Union it is hard they can loose there job if they don't ask... sucks but i know how you feel.... i know were everything is in VON'S and they ask me over and over... sucks... i will be asked three times while i am in there....laughs.... but they are just doing there job.....

that's one of the main reasons i don't like Vons.
I remember when i was living in the bay area, the people at Safeway did that too, but not to the same extent. i came up for a visit and went to the Von's and just about bit someone's head off because i was in a terrible mood and got sick of every employee asking me how i was doing, how my day was going, etc. I really don't think such a thing is polite when it's so repetitive, mandatory and out of habit, not concern.

Gee whizz Newcomer I thought Vons had carry out service? http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/laugh3.gif
I'm with a lot of you on the Hi,How are you ,may I help you locate anything, can I take you to the product, here it is,(employee required to touch product and same product in vons brand. And o yes Vons employees must ask you if you would like a sample ( of anything thats eatable) . Example; if your looking for pickles, the employee must tell you ,where there at and then offer to take you to them and then touch them and also show you vons brand thats simular. Then they are to offer you a sample, open both jars and let you try both. If an employee fails to do this and your one of the store shoppers they would be written up and the stores rating would drop costing department managers a % of their end of the year profit check. Vons / Safeway / Pavilions policy. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/smash.gif

Vons is owned by Safeway, and for some of them it's probably repetition due to the mystery shoppers Safeway has coming in there, but for some it is genuine. I used to work for Vons here in Oakhurst, and when I asked someone if they were finding everything okay, it was because I cared. I get annoyed by that, especially with the new employees there that don't know me, and I hated it when someone got upset because of it. But there have been quite a few people that I had asked, and they wanted me to help them find almost everything on their grocery list, lol. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/shocked.gif

Another thing that makes me crazy is when there are 3 bus loads of tourists in the market. They all wander around the store like they have never seen an orange or a loaf of bread before! There is never enough staff at the check out counters to service them. Truly, in all fairness if I was in a market in Germany or another country, I would probably have the same expression on my face trying to figure out what the heck stuff is. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/freak.gif And I doubt that many countries have the oppulence we have in our markets here in the U.S. I guess I'll find out in 3 weeks when I go to Costa Rica! http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/eusa_dance.gif

Raleys! Better quality, better employees, better enviornment. Sure the lines are hellish, and the parking lots can be a joke, but its worth it just to stick it to VONS. Ever since Safeway took over they are pretty bad to their employees, and of course we as the public are forced to pay that price. I refuse to pay it anymore.
