I visit this one too, but not as a mod or admin. Although every time I do, I have to make it the last one I do because something about their scripting screws up my browser and I eventuall have to reboot.

Good site though and excellent artist there both professional and hobby.

Everytime I visit tocools forums my computer crashes on me. I don't know what the deal is. Is it the software or the ads running behind it? I'm just not sure. Anyhow, I'm busy enough with this one as is. But good job tocools and thanks for the phone call today. It was great to hear from you.

Just a tip tocools, make sure you make a backup of those forums. That software is known to crash and lose data when that happens. You'll be starting from scratch again if you don't have a backup. I saw this happen to a friends board a few weeks ago. Also, watch attachments to make sure someone doesn't upload a virus. Since it is free software, you dont have the same support from your provider. You are pretty much on your own to make sure that the forum stays secure and safe for your members.

I am happy that you started it though and I hope it does well. I also hope that you don't get burnt out Moderating. It can sure be a pain sometimes.

One more tip (if you dont mind)... Register a domain name and use that instead of the proboards domain.... it will be easier to advertise and the search engines will have an easier time finding you. It's a bit rough trying to remember that web address the way it is right now.

foothillforums.com is already taken by someone else http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/sad3.gif

I'm sure you could find something that would work though......

In fact, foothillchat.com is available. That would be a good one. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/yes.gif

If you type "Oakhurst Chat" in google, see who comes up #1. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif It's all about search engine positioning and it takes a long time to build that up. You might as well get things setup properly now so that your search positioning starts to get better.

Hey Mat, since the message board is available through that service would we really have to worry about a virus? I would think if someone tried to upload a virus the site owners would have something in place to prevent that.

I have no idea how viruses work. Can you actually post something that would be harmful? That board has no upload ability for posters. The pictures have to be resident somewhere else on the web and linked. Even avatars cannot be uploaded.

I have several friends who have utilized boards from places like the one we are using and have had great success. Did your friend use proboards? I personally prefer invisionzone, but a friend who has used both recommended proboards. Now I'm concerned. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/sad3.gif

Since members do not have the ability to upload, I don't think it's much of a problem. I wasn't aware that you didn't have the upload option.

We used a free forums on our non-profit for 3 years and had lots of msg's posted then the Message board forums company was attacked by a bad virus and they lost all the messages. Since our msg forums were povided free the company chose only to restore the paying customers data. We learned a valuable lesson with that. " You get what you pay for". We had to start over from scratch and now pay monthly to have our forums. Mat helped set them up for us.

i read oakhurst forums often and i visited several other area forums that were linked above. it sounds to me like others are trying to copy sandmans ideas hoping to make money on it. but my question is this if it so profitable why would sandman sell oakhurst forums? it sounds to me like its alot of work and its going to be hard for the new sites to compete with something that has been established for so many years. maybe they dont want to compete but it sure sounds that way when i read the other forums. they are all trying to copy this one. but why copy this one when we already have this one? why not do something else? i hear about foothill forums ylp forums coarsegold friends oakhurstweather.com forums and who knows who else has local forums up here. what it all comes down to is you should do it if you enjoy it but dont count on it making you money and it will only be popular if you have something unique to offer. i notice that people on the other forums are making new topics that have already been talked about here. how many times and how many places are we going to talk about our hobbies and the current weather? if you enjoy it then that is great but try to do something unique. basslakeca.com for example has something unique to offer with a live webcam of bass lake. i dont see another need for more local forums with the same old categories and topics. sorry just my opinion. i already have enough places to visit on the internet as is and i only have so much time to use the computer when i get home from work.

In our case, we are not trying to compete at all! OR make money. When we lived in Oakhurst we loved OO and met a lot of wonderful friends because of the site. When we moved over here, we still visit the site, but we aren't close enough to join in on a lot of the fun stuff so we decided we wanted to get something similar going over here. It is even more difficult to meet people on this side of the river because we don't have as much to offer...no theatre or bowling alley or department stores...in fact, the only conveniences we have here are a Mexican restaurant, a couple of coffee shops, A pizza parlor, a couple of feed stores, a grocery store (that is so expensive most of us don't do our bulk shopping there), and LONGS!! We thought having a local information site would help bring the community together.

Also, if Mat is forced to shut down the boards, having someplace to keep in touch with others you've come to know is a good thing. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

I don't post here a lot either. I do belong to several other forums though. So far, forums are forums. They use pretty much the same programs which means pretty much the same message board set up. It does not seem to bother me that they are similar. I look for common interests and ideas that I can use in my everyday living. Newspapers run the same National Headlines, the same American Express ad, and the same sports scores; does this repetative printing make them copycats?

YLPforum has been around long before Sandman had any web page at all. And is for a small area, just Yosemite Lakes Park. There have been widly successful Yahoogroups that have self destructed ....

There is no money to be made in forums. They are everywhere. Matt's sale has quite a few web sites, and has more to offer then typical because he has more developed.

Lacey's forum is doing well.... because it is a communication tool ... and people love to communicate ... No one is forced to communicate ... also there are local things going on ... Oakhurst is not Coarsegold, is not Prather is not YLP is not Raymond ....

They are not all the same people so some ideas will flex... if I were to live in YLP .... do I care about the gas prices in Auberry or Prather ? or the fact that they may put a new stop sign on 168 ??? no .... but I enjoy TooCools posts .... so I read and sometimes comment ....

As far as making money .... it is too much work to think that making money is a result of it .... I wish Matt success....But I know he doesnt think forming a chat site is profitable .... all his other work here is ...
