View Full Version : Automatic Ice Makers

The auto ice maker on my frig has been acting up lately and this morning I woke up to water all over the kitchen floor. What I would like to know is is it worth trying to fix or should I just disconnect it and forget about it?

I know ice makers can be more trouble than they are worth ands usually don't last too long.

Any suggestions?

i have one of those auto icemaker thingies....i just buy ice from the Chevron station up the road. I wanna get one of those fridges where you have crushed ice thru the door (mmmmm fridgenapping idea.... who has one of those fridges?)

BG, mine sometimes acts up whent he ice isn't being used regularly.(Usually in the colder weather) The ice chunks up in the holder because of the moisture from the door being opened & closed. Then, the chunks get into the hopper (between the door & outside dispenser) they don't come out because they're too big, but as they start to melt, they put a puddle in front of the fridge. Try cleaning out all of the ice & starting over, this might help. It did with mine.

You also could just have a leak at the connection where the water is plumbed into the fridge. We have one with a front door dispenser and we love it. We've never had a problem with ice melting in the dispenser, but at times it gets hung up. We just push the ice around and loosen it up and it works again. In my opinion they are worth fixing. I would so miss mine if it ever went away. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

Sounds like you are all wrong. But good guesses.More than likely the water line is frozen.Usually due to a faulty valve. The valve leaks into the icemaker slowly andit cold in the freezer so it freezes.well when it fills with ice there is no where for that water to go.So it leaks all over the inside of the freezer. So basicly you probably need a water inlet valve and the ice maker taken out and thawed out.If you want me to look at let me know. The water valve is probably in the neighboorhood of $25.

hmmmm...perhaps. frozen line sounds good but the ice maker is not full nor has it been for awhile now. The water escaped on the floor and might I add there was a lot of it. There is none in the freezer its self. Nor does there appear to be any under the the frig. Let me talk this over with the current $$ maker. How much for the service call?

We charge $50 and that includes the first hour. And if it doesnt take me that long to diagnose and i have to order the parts when I come back you still have whatever time left over form that hour.

Funny, mine went out a day or so ago... Sears came and replaced the entire unit today. something about it not having enough water pressure. ???

if they replaced the whole unit.it means they didnt really know what was wrong with it.As far as water pressure the valve in there is to slow the water down.It just trickles. But you cant go wrong replacing the whole unit. That is a sure way to fix whatever it might be.

Since I have Sears 'protection' plans, it was easier to go that way. I do like that they come out (when you can get them up here) & fix whatever at no additional charge.

We should just go back to the old reliable ice cube trays. Remember the aluminum ones with the pull up handles? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/yes.gif

My sister and I used to make popsicles with those, using Kool-Aide. Guess we were just simple and easy to please, but there were few things better than some Kool-Aide pops and a pan of Jiffy Pop in those days. Except having both of those while watching corny Godzilla and Mothra, etc. movies.

Oh those were the very best! I still love to watch Godzilla & Mothra. My fav was the twins who talked together. Love watching and laughing at the corny stuff. Last week we watched "Day the World Stood Still" with Michael Rennie. Yeah, popcicles, popcorn and porn (er corn)! Can't beat it!

Give me those old, corny sci-fi and horror movies any day, rather than the modern ones that have promising themes but end up cheating viewers out of good acting, good plot, in exchange for a mishmash of special FX.

I just saw VHS of Forbidden Planet and The Day the Earth Stood Still on ebay, both for just 5 bucks as a set. Also, lots of DVDs for not much money. Why not just look there? You do not have to have a PayPal account in most cases. Most sellers accept money orders.

that is exactly what mine was doing. Once Electro got it out and we could get a good look at it we discovered 10 years of mineral build up (well water) had rendered the unit useless. Totally corroded. Ordered a new unit and all is well again!
