NC,

I never thought I'd see a cloud I didn't like, but they sure look nasty... http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/wow1.gif
Is your friend a "storm chaser" or did he just happen upon these photos in some wild weather?

Nat'l Weather Service continues to have flood warnings for the Merced; they're talking about triple digit temps in the central valley this weekend.

I have to wonder - how's Lewis Creek doing? Must be high, too...

Yuck. In the summer I don't leave much, unless it is to go straight from my air conditioned vehicle to an air conditioned store or a body of cool water.
I can't think of anything worse than 85 degrees Farenheit or higher, unless that is 85 degrees + humidity. Give me cold North Dakota winter anyday.. at least then I can layer up and keep warm..

I hate summer.

Lovvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvve the heat. Hate the cold. Summer is good for my muscles, Winter makes them hurt. I am sure Sandman knows what I mean. On a hot day nothing better than swimming in a cool creek or being under a waterfall in a cool pool swimming. It's just getting there that poses the problem now http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/stretch.gif

I would rather have temperatures in the 60's that the 88 and 90 degrees we have been getting. When i arrived up here in Aug. 1980 it wasn't badbut the following May it hit 100% in May and never let up until September. I was sore tempted to quit the new job and hightail it to someplace cool. But when it did cool off it did so with a vengeance. It started snowing in October and left 6 inches of snow on 41 through town. I lived in a place a 1/4 mile from a paved road and it was 2 days before I could get to town and to work. So be careful what you pray for.

Well, summer took its time getting here but I think it is here to stay now. I love the cooler weather but my body has ceased loving it. So although I'll be sweaty and icky my old bones will be happier! My very fav time is Fall when the days are warm and nights chilly.

Expires 2:00 AM PDT on September 19, 2005

Statement as of 8:03 PM PDT on September 18, 2005

... Wet weather possible Monday and Tuesday...

An upper level low pressure system is developing off the central
California coast. This low has the potential to draw tropical
moisture into the central California interior from the south over
the next couple of days.

This tropical moisture could bring an increasing chance of showers
and thunderstorms to the mountains and deserts Monday through
Tuesday. For the central and southern San Joaquin Valley... the main
threat will be from any showers and thunderstorms that drift north
from the Tehachapi Mountains. Any storms that drift over the valley
floor could produce local rainfall amounts of a few hundredths of an
inch or more.

People with rain sensitive interests should monitor forecasts and
the latest conditions. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio... or your
favorite news source... for later statements on this developing
weather pattern.

Statement as of 4:47 AM PDT on October 12, 2005

A cold storm system originating in the Gulf of Alaska will approach from the northwest on Saturday... bringing an increase in clouds and a slight chance of showers to the foothills and higher elevations north of Kern County. This storm will bring much cooler and potentially wet weather to the region Sunday through Monday. There is also the potential for significant snowfall over the higher elevations of the southern Sierra. Tuesday will remain cool and unsettled as the storm moves into the Great Basin.

If planning travel in the southern Sierra Nevada this weekend... keep abreast of the latest statements and forecasts.

Tried to get the shot SheilaMae- but I can either get the face of the moon no moonbow... or the moonbow and a white blob for a moon - can't find my tripod (I hardly ever use it) and I've got to finish up work for tomorrow's day to get me started on the right foot - will check out our results tomorrow - if worthy - shall post!

It is pretty! Thanks for pointing it out!

I don't see any clouds though from our vantage point.

I couldn't get the ring without it just looking like a bunch of light... and then when I'd speed the shutter to try to get the "blob" from appearing, all I could get was this (with no ring because it was shutting down the amount of light it was exposing) Sorry Sheila!

Lightning Knocks Out Power in Valley

October 25, 2005 -
Lightning knocked out power to thousands of people in the Central Valley last night. As of this morning, PG&E said 2,000 people still didn't have electricity.

As many as 35,000 people in Clovis, West Fresno, Tivy Valley, Pine Flat Lake, Kingsburg and Kings Canyon National Park were in the dark late last night.
PG&E says there were 42 outages and all were lightning related.

Clovis and Kingsburg had the power back on at about 1:00am this morning.

It must be raining.... cos coming home today at around 3pm there was a major accident just above the 22 mile house. They diverted traffic to the pissy narrow road around and up to rd 211 to Oneils then back to 41. It had just happened cos the CHP were just screaming on scene when I got there.

I know what you mean. We're at 3100 and get snow once in a blue moon, but lots of dustings. If we were just up a little higher, like 500 ft. I think I would be happily snow fulfilled!

Summer
Dec 04, 2005, 08:27 PM
Snow is a tricky thing. It has to be cold enough but with moisture in the air. But for there to be moisture in the air it needs to be warmer, so there's a fine line where snow is possible. Usually if there is rain and temps drop suddenly down to 35 degrees it will become snow. Shoot, I sound like a weatherman and I have no idea what I'm talking about. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/clown.gif

I'll be curious to see your results, since I'm thinking of getting one myself. I borrowed an older one from my boss and our reported elevation varied by as much as 100 meters over the course of just a few hours. I thought they'd be a bit more accurate than that and hopefully the newer ones are.

John @ 3300ft.
Dec 06, 2005, 08:01 PM
I bought the cheapy $100 one, but it has verything I need for now. Checked the accuracy vs. a topo map, with local benchmarks, and it's within the 12ft accuracy it's capable of. Depends on how many sat's it locks onto.

We're 62 inside (no heater), 30 outside this morning! Frost again - only heavier this time!

And Newcomer was making snow (left the sprinklers on last night for the lawn!) Come on over and build some snowmen - wait - it will be melted by the time you get here! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/sad3.gif

I was impressed that the GPS was reporting my exact speed while driving in my car, and the trip distance matched my car odometer reading over a 180 mile trip. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/eusa_dance.gif

Yeah, I've got about 4 inches in my garage. The neighbor boys came over to help mine dig trenches, our french drain system sucks...but I'm bot as bad off as my neighbors.
I think my neighbors back yard is gonna come sliding down soon, it's fully saturated.
The other one has a fully running river going through his yard (and house?) from what I'm told.

Still looking for sandbags.

Dec 31, 2005, 10:29 AM
My next door neighbors old redwood came down. A lucky fall though...missed the house, fence, flower beds, garage etc. Almost magical.

The rain run-off tends to head straight for my garage and storage shed. Thankfully, I dug a drainage trench across the entire driveway the other day. It has helped a lot.

Kahlua Kid
Dec 31, 2005, 12:16 PM
Our trenches around the stables had been doing their job the last few rains, but today, the rain was pounding and flying in from all directions with the wind - was really cool to watch it swirl from all directions as heavy as it was. So now, everything is soaked and we now have a small pond in the back yard. Always wanted a pond!

Anyone got any Koi?

The worst was in 1997 during El Nino. The water never receeded (well not for weeks anyways). I lost about 15 feet of my back yard (heighth and width). Where there was once a gentle slope with a cool beach area in now a sharp drop-off. I am curious to see what the new configuration will be!!

The house sits about an acre away from the river on the highest piece of land....thank goodness!!

This is a one way in and the same way out road with a bridge of sorts crossing the river. During the El Nino year the river broke its banks down by the bridge and came close to taking out the road. So far, it hasn't risen quite that high.

Rain is good. It's nice when it takes a break...like the next few days. If we get the kind of rain lke last year, we'll get the greater than usual amount of wildflowers in the spring...that's a good pay-off. And the native and foreign wildlife will have plenty to eat...the fields will be greener sooner and longer. We definately should be thankful for the rain even though it can create some immediate, but temporary complications in our daily plans.

I feel bad for the Dalmation who lives next door to me...his only shelter is his Igloo and he's not using it much. But with the heavy rain and wind, maybe the Igloo's interior isn't very dry. He's old and maybe senile...but I sure feel bad for him when I see him laying in the mud up against the house. He's in his backyard all day long. His owners only bring him in at night when they're home.

Be careful! Those wind gusts can cause some damage and injury. Two roofing sheets tore off of our patio roof....and Todd told me the ornamental ball from the tip top of the tall street sign blew off, fortunately landed on the mail box...and not someone's head or car windshield. If this keeps up we could expect some weak oak branches and trees to go...they're all swaying good. Don't stand near any oaks.

Neighbors came home and pput dog in garage...thank goodness for that.

Huge Bullpine over on Road 400 - blocking the entire road - had to go "off-road" to get around it. But the worst part - its fallen right around a blind corner - so if someone is flying - they are not going to have enought time to stop - it reminded me of a Video Game we have, ExtremeSports - only your on a bike when you come around a corner and see the fallen tree.

Yup - be careful out there. Our trees are doing pretty good thus far - and the water is running where it should be... but our empty doughboy pool - well... the wind is pushing its sides in... not good!

WOW!!!

There are quite a few homes along those falls - I wonder how they are faring.

There is a really large nice home at the bottom there - I wonder it they are getting extra "rain" from the falls... that would freak me out to be so near so much water with my house.

Like you BG - I'd think it pretty, but would worry about it overflowing and flooding... I hope you are far enough away to be safe!

I have been to the house at the bottom when it's normal runoff (only to front door) and the roar of the water is quite deafening then, I can't imagine what it's like today. If you take Hidden Falls Road off 222 (if you dare cross the bridge http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif )you can get an idea of the sound once you get close. The road is naorrow and winding and it isn't easy to turn around (just fyi)
The lower part of the falls is way wider than normal. I was going to try to get close (cause I know how) but I don't know the people who bought the property recently so decided against it. Plus it was pouring pretty hard and I didn't want to take a chance on getting stuck.
I took that picture from The road to Oakhurst rocks so I was pretty far away.

Exactly what I was thinking - I've driven down that road one time when a house was for sale down there - to check it out - and it was too tight for comfort - I felt claustrophobic and just thought, what would you do in a fire here? And the falls WERE loud, like you describe!

Beautiful though to have that in your backyard (when its not threatening to overflow).

Not with this wacky weather!

My plants don't know to bloom or go dormant. They are all confused! My Paperwhite Narcissus have bloomed already - hoping it won't mess them up for a March bloom - but probably will!

And my geraniums, roses, and other plants are still growing and blooming!

Even a couple Oaks are starting to leaf out already.

If a hard frost comes, its really going to wreak havoc on these poor tender shoots!

And tonite I put out a centipede... Never had a frog in the house yet! A few little ones in the garage though.

They keep promising snow for the mountains, but i don't see it. I guess I'd better leave the cave and forage for food & wood to tide me over just in case they're correct.

Statement as of 9:07 PM PST on January 12, 2006

... Winter Storm Watch in effect from Friday evening through late Saturday night...

The National Weather Service in Hanford has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the southern Sierra north of Kern County... which is in effect from Friday evening through late Saturday night.

A Pacific storm system will move into the region Friday night... rain and snow are expected to develop over the Sierra after midnight. Initially, snow levels will be above 6500 feet however colder air will arrive during the day on Saturday. Snow levels will fall to as low as 3500-4000 feet by late Saturday afternoon and evening. Heavy snow is possible and significant accumulations exceeding 15 inches are possible at elevations above 5000 feet. Gusty winds will accompany the snow. The storm will move east of the Sierra by late Saturday night... ending the threatof widespread accumulating snow.

A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant snow accumulations that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio... or your favorite news source... for further information on this potentially dangerous winter weather event.

So much hail on the ground here in Indian Lakes, it reminds us of a light snow dusting back in Chicago. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif (drove home to the tune of lightning and buckets of hail from Oakhurst - nothing like being under the Von's Gas canopy when it's hailing and the wind's whipping!)
