That was the loudest, brightest, longest rumbling of thunder and lightning I've ever seen or heard! Non-stop no-kidding for 45 min-1 hour - saw multiple flashes of lightning within nano-seconds of each other, then the crackle and thunder of thunder, then a second later more multiple lightning - sounded like bombs were going off all around us and gunfire.
Simply unbelievable! And the hail!
We unplugged everything - bolts were hitting only a 1/2 block away - just amazing!

I just finished installing my new weather detectors! The directions are as follows:
How to forecast the weather:
Go to your back door and look for the dog.
If the dog is at the door and he is wet, it's probably raining.
But if the dog is standing there really soaking wet, it is probably raining really hard.
If the dog's fur looks like it's been rubbed the wrong way, it's probably windy.
If the dog has snow on his back, it's probably snowing.
Of course, to be able to tell the weather like this, you have to leave the dog outside all the time, especially if you expect bad weather.

snow that low? grrrrrrrrrr i cringe to think of icy roads.
we always used to get a one-or-two-week warm spell in january (long enough for people's fruit trees to bloom too early) but this year it seems to have hit in february.
i don't mind driving when it snows, but afterward, when it melts across the road during the day, and then freezes overnight, i HATE it.

Strange thing happened this morning. Woke up at 6:30 and took a nice shower and used the sinks and toiletets then 1/2 hour later I tried to turn on the sink again and BAM No Water. I went out to the shed and everything was insulated but no water out of the pressure release valve when I tried it. Seems like the jet pump froze. How can that happen after using water just a short time before it. I tried resetting the pressure switch but it would not kick on the pump and the pressure read 0. I went to Fresno and returned around 11Am and it was working again. Tonight I have a spotlight bulb setup next to it that puts off heat to raise the area temp by probably 5-6 degrees and we will see what happens in the morning. Stay tuned. All the pipes are insulated with the foam wraps but some of the pip joints were not so I covered the areas in canvas painter tarps.
By the way it's already 30 here right now. It's going to be a cold night

Newcomer--we keep one of those red heat bulbs on in the pump house all winter and upon occation still wake up to no water. Ours freezes in the pipes though(they run through the attic). Have you also considered a blanket wrap ...if it is feasible that is? I was also going to suggest leaving an inside faucet trickling all night, but that would not apply to your instance. Good luck!

Full Advisory Text
Oakhurst:
Warning Description: Special Weather Statement
Warning Date: 11:40 am PST on February 17, 2006
WarningSum:...A Very Cold Storm System Will Affect The Central California
Interior With Low Snow Levels...
Warning Message:A low pressure system with very cold air...will affect the central
California interior through Sunday morning. The low...which
originated in western Canada is currently located off the northern
California coast and it will send several weather disturbances into
central California over the next 48 hours. Each disturbance will
bring the threat of rain and snow showers. Late Saturday...the main
low is forecast to move into the Bay area and then cross central
California Saturday night and early Sunday. This will bring the
greatest threat of rain and low elevation snow.
Snow levels today will be in the 2000 to 4000 foot range...and by
Saturday night...when the main low comes ashore...they will fall to
the 1000 to 2000 foot range. With air this cold...it is likely that
snow will fall into the lower Sierra foothills...the lower slopes of
the Kern County mountains...the mountains of western Fresno and
Merced counties...and on the Kern County desert floor. On Saturday
night...the precipitation may even mix with snow on the San Joaquin
Valley floor...although no accumulation is expected.
At this time it doesn't appear that widespread heavy snow will
affect the area. However...due to the rarity of snow at such low
elevations and its impacts on travel...a Winter Storm Watch has
been issued for the Kern County mountains and deserts for late
Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning.
A return to mainly dry and slightly warmer weather is anticipated
next week.

Todd headed home at about 9:30 tonight...and the town was covered with snow. It got a little hairy coming home on Hwy 49. Drivers were pulled over on both sides of the road scared as heck to drive thru the pockets of snowshowers. He went ahead going about 20 mph...couldn't see any lines in the road. Could barely see the edges of the road. Pretty dangerous. Lucky to make it home. He was worried how his cook made it home to Nippinawasee.
I'm excited to see what the snow will look like in the morning!

When I drove home earlier tonite, the plows were not yet out. Passed 4 or 5 cars that had slid off the road, including one truck that went half way over on the curve near 420. No one needed any help, though. I am happy I have a Subaru...
When I got home, we had guests, a friend of Jai got stuck right at the entrance to Teaford. They spent some time with us while Jai made them tea. It looks like we've gotten about 4-5 inches so far...
Got a call from the kids, they were outside at their Condo in Oakhurst playing in the snow!
Saw Sandman pull in earlier, too. Rough ride, huh cutie?
Hope it clears up or at least they have it plowed in the morning, gotta head to Bakersfield early...

They should plow in the morning. You really should have a set of cables, a lot easier to put on, but if they're required, usually there's someone there to help you out. (Just tip them well) http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif
Check http://www.dot.ca.gov/ in the morning, it's usually up to date with road conditions & requirements. They actually just said on 24 that they expect snow on the Valley floor tomorrow! Hmmm, Do I Really Wanna Drive To Bakersfield??? (I Gotta) http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/confused.gif

I drove from Oakland to Oakhurst this afternoon. It was pretty nice weather on Oakland this week, but the drive to the hills was a bit intense. There was a lot of traffic leaving the Bay Area. I hit snow near Mariposa and had a CHP following me the entire way on 49. I think he was using my tracks since he was in a Ford Crown Vic. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/lol.gif Once I passed the Forks turnoff, I started seeing so many cars stuck all over the place... off the road, over the side, spun out. There were several tow rucks and other 4WD vehicles trying to help. To be honest, I was just trying to get through it so that Kato could get out and pee on a tree. We had been in the car for 4 hours.
I went through the maze of cars and rescue vehicles and made it to the Teaford Turnoff. Well, that was a fun turn. I started to slip off the pavement and had to step on the gas in order to stay on the road... so I hit at it about 35 or so... I guess DG watched this? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/lol.gif The Jeep pulled through just fine. Kato was happy to play in the snow. He stayed outside for an hour or two.
Later in the night, I drove to Oakhurst to visit with friends and the road was much more covered. As oakhurstleaf described... no lines on the road... hard to see the road. I just took it slow and stayed in low gears. I slipped a bit here and there, but it was all fun and nothing scary. I love my Jeep. The other trucks in front of me were slipping all over the place. The ride home an hour ago was pretty crazy, as well... but I didn't slip once. You just have to know how to drive in it, take it slow and drive a Jeep. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif
Where are the plows at? Those roads are covered in snow!!! If someone has a plow I can borrow I'll hook it to the front of my Jeep and plow some of these roads.
Don't drive if you don't have to... especially if you don't have 4WD and snow driving experience. Those roads are rough right now.

Deadwood was open with no chains coming home from work this evening, but very slow going (thank goodness)--very slushy in spots. There was snow on the ground from about a mile below the Overlook Hotel (our pet word for the casino).

Snow Days? What's a "Snow Day" When I was a kid we had to walk 15 miles uphill in bare feet to school throught 12ft snow drifts until our limbs were black & frostbitten. That's the way it was and we liked it. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif SNL

I'll need to see it to believe it, but the forecast for the end of the week mentioned snow levels of 1000ft by late Friday. They made a comparison between the coming late week storm and a similar storm in December of 1998 that brought snow to the valley floor.

The stupid weathermen all said 4-5 feet of snow at 5000 feet last night, so I closed the Inn for a couple of days and told the staff to take the time off. What happened? NO SNOW. So now I gotta call everyone and tell them they have to work. Grrrrrrrrr. At any rate, I'm glad they were wrong, that much snow would be awful to deal with.

Statement as of 5:15 AM PST on March 09, 2006
... An usually cold weather system to affect the foothills and Kern
County mountains this weekend...
A weather system originating in the Gulf of Alaska, will
move into the region on Friday, and will linger through the weekend.
The airmass associated with this system is very cold and snow
levels will likely fall to lower foothill elevations in the
1000 to 1500 foot range over the north, and the 1500 to 2000 foot
range in the Kern County mountains, by Sunday morning. The snow
will affect major Highways and passes such as Interstate 5 over the
Grapevine, and Highway 58 over Tehachapi Pass. The exact amount
of moisture with this system is questionable, however snow amounts up
to several inches are certainly possible by late Sunday.
By Monday afternoon, the low is projected to move east of the area
and the threat of snow will end.
Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio... or your favorite news source... for
further information on this winter weather event.

Warning Description: Special Weather Statement
Warning Date: 6:00 PM PST on March 9, 2006
WarningSum:...An Usually Cold Weather System To Affect The Foothills And Kern
County Mountains This Weekend...
Warning Message:A weather system originating in the Gulf of Alaska will move into the
region on Friday...and will linger through the weekend. The airmass
associated with this system is very cold...and will destabilize if
any breaks in the clouds allow for afternoon heating. This may result
in the development of strong afternoon and early evening
thunderstorms both Friday and Saturday. These thunderstorms may
produce locally heavy rain...hail...lightning and locally gusty
winds. A mix of rain and snow is also possible Saturday...especially
in heavier showers and thunderstorms.
Because the airmass will be unseasonably cold...snow levels will
likely fall to lower foothill elevations in the 1000 to 1500 foot
range over the north...and the 1500 to 2000 foot range in the Kern
County mountains...by Sunday morning. The snow will affect major

Love to - but I don't know how to drive in the snow! or put chains on - we have them in the 4x4 so we can tell the officers we're legal - but don't make me put those things on or there might be a free comedy show!(So Cal Girl you know!) http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif
I've got 30 vacation days (the max I can carry at work so I cannot accrue anymore until I get down below 30 and I either use them or lose them - so I'm a usin them... )
We're painting my office (or should I say, finishing it finally!) We had it almost done when we moved in... we were painting fools, but then, somehow, we ran out of steam and never cut it in near the ceiling - so today, we're taping and painting!
