Fickle weather, we have.

I did take the kids to school with the 2-hr delay...school was going to be dismissed at regular times. At 10 am, snow was melting and it was sunny with large patches of blue sky. By 11, in town, it was looking threatening and I'm thinking....I better load up on some groceries (got someone to cover for me at work)...by 11:50, as I'm leaving Vons, it's snowing. 1 hr later, it's sunny again...ah, what a day! Now it's looking threatening again.

I'm glad the kids did have school today...I like to grocery shop alone. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/yes.gif

My husband can not see the road. He is just getting to the Chevron outside of Fresno. The hail is so heavy that cars are swerving around, out of their lanes, because they can not see the lines.

Crazy. He's pulling over for a minute, just got the **** scared out of him.

We've got over a foot here right now. YJ, hope your husband make sit home safely tonight. Do you have heat? You said something about no firewood, the woodstove is our only source of heat, I'm wondering about you. Jack came home up road 200 & around to Teaford, but theres no way the 426 is passable now.

Yosemite Joy
Mar 10, 2006, 08:32 PM
hes stuck in coarsegold. chp said give it up until tomorrow. I have propane heat too, and i turned it up to 85 in case the power stays out.

there is no way keith can get home. his little sports car isnt going to make it around (620) without seriously putting his life in jeopardy. He has chains on. Going to sleep on the side of the road after he finds a gas station with electricity.

Coarsegold has no electricity.

yeah so the branch fell on the propane tank and six feet away it fell on my power lines so they are on the ground

i have to call pge before my power goes out.

http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/sad3.gif this is kind of scary

i jumped on the baby (who is asleep) when i heard the crack, it sounded very close was afraid it was goingto come through the roof. the tree has large limbs over the house, but luckily it was one about 6 feet away from the house.

Hes gonna freeze his tush off in that car! I couldnt believe it coming up the hill. .there was LOTS of snow on the road between ave 12 and 15.
then it stopped til i got to 1000 feet elev.

There seems to be so much drama going on here tonight!! I am sure this will be all over with soon. I lived in Vermont for three years and this is nothing! Trees fall and power goes out and we all survive.

Yosemite Joy

I was born and lived in vermont for years. i also lived in north dakota for a few years.

I realise this is essentially "nothing" but to a pregnant woman who is alone with a one year old, and her husband is stuck on the other side of the mountain with trees falling on her electrical lines next to her propane tank and on her house.... it sure as hell doesn't feel like "nothing".

I can not leave. I am afraid that if I leave I will get stuck with an infant in the snow.

Dont you have friends or neighbors to help you in your situation? If I had power lines down around my house and was afraid and alone and pregnant I would have called someone to help me out instead of being on this forum. If it is that serious get someone to help you! Geez dont just sit there helplessly!!

Uh okay. Yeah, let's see.... my husband is at Texaco in Coarsegold. Stranded there because he can't get over Deadwood.

My mother in law is about 2 miles down the road, with snow all over the road, and I think it would be pretty stupid to go driving and risk getting stuck, getting hit by another moron, or whatever with an infant in the car.

I am on the forum because what else am I supposed to do? My power is so low I can't turn on a television, I don't have neighbors I can go traipsing through the snow and woods, and falling trees with an infant to go see.

Oh, well let's see. I called PGE, 911, Roma. Nothing. No one can get here, there have been numerous accidents by morons who put tires on the front wheels when they have RWD.

Oh geez well if I were you I would spend less time judging other people, especially ones who are defensive and very independent and intelligent and more time shutting the hell up. Who am I supposed to call? I have called everyone. I am willing to bet you are not pregnant, don't have children, nor a clue of what you are talking about.

Who the hell is going to come here and rescue me? 911 wont even come. Or at least they haven't yet. What an assholish thing to say to someone.

SierraSnows
Mar 10, 2006, 10:26 PM
Tires are supposed to go on the front wheels.

I am not judging you any more then you are judging me. I have two children and no I am not pregnant. But I am a single mom and My soon to be husband is stuck in fresno also and I do know what I am talking about. I just do not over react this will all pass and that is what I was trying say. There is no reason to attack me and try to have a little faith and everything will be ok. You really need to calm down and everything will be ok. This is a forum and please refrain from telling me to shut the H*** up. That is uncalled for.

Yosemite Joy
Mar 10, 2006, 10:31 PM
Ahh, not if you have RWD and one set. Duh. And that is what happened to one moron in front of my husband.

Yeah, well when a tree falls on your house, no one can help you, you can't really do much but hang out on the other side of the house and wait.. come talk to me. Otherwise maybe you shouldn't be judging me.

I do believe that telling me that I was doing something wrong or terribly irresponsible by staying in my house, was pretty inappropriate as well. If 911 told me to go venture into the woods I may of taken their advice. Some stranger named Michelle on a forum? Nah, don't think so.

Thanks though. Have a nice night.

Maybe you meant chains in your post.
but you put tires.

I did not say you were irresponsible or doing something wrong but from your posts it sounded rather serious like it was a hazard to be in the house..
I did not know you lived in the the woods and had no neighbors. I just thought maybe you could get some help from someone who was close to you.

That's very nice of you. My husband just got home, and I am okay now. The tree is competely on my house though...it is crazy outside!! It looks unreal, the tree I mean. I hope PG and E comes soon to check out the power line, I am grateful as hell that the power is on enough that I was able to use my internet all night.

What a surreal night. Between watching limbs fall down, moving my son to another room to sleep because his room is under an oak tree, watching about 4 episodes of Lost - season 2, drinking several beers, and trying to figure out how I was going to get 2 miles down the road to YJs house if she needed help, this has been a night unique in my life.

I hope everyone made it safely home and through the night. It is absolutely beautiful out right now. But I am also aware there going to be lots of folks needing assitance today. Those of you with older nieghbors...please don't forget about them. while out playing with kids today check on your neighbors and their homes.

There are going to be a lot of trees down and lot of people without heat or power.

YJ - I am happy your Hubby made it home in one piece. How bad is the tree damage? Me I get all freaky during fire season. I understand your fears during the night.

I still have power, heat, water thankfully...but trees and limbs are going to be coming down all day so who knows. I will walk my road later. A tree usually falls and blocks the road during storms like this.

Myst--

I am glad you have a back-up plan for today...but this beauty today can only be reflective of a beautiful bride!!

OK, just read this all the way through. The forums are a great place to come for advice, but, I, too, have come here when I was upset, just to have some company, or release my anxieties.
YJ, you were in the right place. If you'd of really needed someone there, one of us would of found a way. WE ARE NOT just a bunch of avatars on a site,

WE ARE A COMMUNITY.
WE PLAY NICE
WE DON'T CALL NAMES

Anyone can come here when they're feeling lonely or vulnerable & YJ, if we kept you sane while you were starting to freak, then we did what we're here for. Just try not to fall into it & call names, OK?

Mat is off line for a couple days & Surf is in Salt Lake, and I really don't want to close this topic, so be good, OK, kids? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif

Remember, this is the How's the Weather thread, if someone wants to start a thread on tires, tire chains, tires on cars, etc., Go For It!

Oh, and it's sunny currently in Teaford, 26 degrees & we ended up with about 18 inches of snow.
More is supposedly in it's way, so prepare.

I was clearing off my hot tub so I can use it later and saw an ambulance off the road at my driveway. So, I went to help dig it out and then I cleared my driveway. Of course, now it is snowing again. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/sad3.gif At least the ambulance was not on a big emergency call, someone that lives across the street that slipped and may have broken her ankle.

Yep, it's snowing good in Oakhurst...well, out here in Goldside anyway. Had a power outage in the early morning hours lasting till about 7:30, and another one about 9 ish lasting less than an hour. Hope there's no more! Have had a few quick zip-outs. No power outage in downtown Oakhurst...we were worried about the briskets! Todd's is open! But may close a little earlier if it gets too much...Free Ribs for anyone with 4WD or chains who'll drive Todd home (kidding or maybe not http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif).

Up to 5 in of fresh snow expected from 4 to 10 pm in Oakhurst and other southern Sierra Nevada foothill locales. Whoa...on top of what we already have. Guess my brother from Cypress won't be able to make it in tonight...I don't think he'll even be able to get over the Grapevine if there's snow there too!

Bgirl, how long have you lived in Oakhurst? We've lived here for 6 yrs. and this is the most snow we've ever seen here. BTW, I'm using your idea of filling buckets of water for the toilets, also filled the tub. I pre-made coffee, sandwiches and soup so we can heat on the wood stove. We were out of electro all night long until 11:00 a.m. today. It has been snowing steadily for about 2 hrs. now and looks like at least 4 inches of new snow - and supposed to last into the night! Undoubtedly the electro will go off again and we'll probably be in snow drifts up to our thighs!

One of my brothers has lived here for almost 15 years...he said it's never snowed like this in all the time he's been here. His home's in Yosemite Forks...and they've gotten good dustings before, nothing that lasted long or required plowing or shoveling in 15 yrs...he thinks this is very unusual, maybe a once in 20-yr thing.

That is the same time Bass Lake was snowed in and w/o power for 4 days. I had power heat and water during that time too and ended up with a house full of friends and coworkers. Was actually kind of fun.

Hasn't snowed this much recently but I moved here in 1973 and it snowed 4 feet in 4 hours that year in February or March...at least I think it was that year..or 74....but power was out for 2 weeks in North Fork (We lived in Cascadel Woods) The snow level was down to Fresno that nite and we commuted from there...made it to South Fork and walked the rest of the way up to Cascadel in like 4 to 5 ft of snow. Hahaha what an adventure. Heres my rental looking from my front door this morning!!!

Power went out in YLP at 1am. woke up to tree branches falling and a tree fell on my nieghbors house. dont think thier home though. Power finally came on at 4:30pm.
There are alot of fallen trees and branches in ylp.
And yes home alone with 3 little kids, but I'm not the type to panic until I have too. and luckly in YLP we have nieghbors I have 2 very good friends on each side of me 1/2 mile away. No biggie really.

However did get the tree trimmed where the branch was so heavy with snow it was at my bedroom window. Had it broke off would have landed in bed with me. So thats taken care of if it snows again tonight.

Wow what a storm.

OMG! I've never been in snow like this in my entire life - never lived in it, never walked in it, never drove in it! Have been to the snow, but usually on a nice sunny day to ski - (Keep laughin, yup, SOCal girl!)

We've been without power since Friday night around 10:00 p.m. - saw a transformer blow near us - big flash of light, and a pole was down too. just got power back last night around 11:00 p.m.

I stood outside, in Beau's stall with him - he was freaking out, Friday night for about an hour to try to calm him down. The full moon was making everything glow -even through the thick snow clouds. But I couldn't see or make out where the moon must have been. But I could see where I was walking with a faint glow and dark gray shades.

I listened to the quiet, interupted every 2 minutes with a crackling, and snapping and whishing sound of giant oak limbs falling all around me - and our Neighbors' Eucalyptus grove was completely fallen over and broken down. He has over 200 eucalyptus trees in there - (That's what was freaking Beau out). Sounded first like gun shots. It was a sound I'll never forget.

My elation with the snow had been lost when these grand oaks were being taken by this seemingly harmless snow. 100 year oaks losing the battle for their limbs. All over our neighborhood limbs are broken off and even some trees 20-30 feet tall completely fallen over roots up.

Thankfully we've only lost a few limbs. But one of our 100 year + Oak has given up 3 giant limbs and it now looks deformed. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/cry.gif

We were out Friday night at 11:00 p.m. when we noticed our Dogwoods, Redbuds, Pears, Live Oaks were so laden with snow they were bent to the ground, many lying flat, we shook them free - a cold, frostbitten endeavor, but I think it saved our trees! Couldn't shake our 60 foot oaks though... no saving some of their limbs.

Our neighbor who has lived here in his house for 16 years said this is the heaviest snow he's seen since being here. Last heavy snow was sometime around 1997.

Another neighbor told me this snow rivals a 1968 snow - the last time Coarsegold received this much snow.

No more snow please... no longer mesmerized! The Oaks just can't take it.

Although, looking outside, dark gray clouds rolling in again this morning and a very light snow starting.

I know what you mean. It's sad when the Old Oaks give way and one of their arms fall off. I have about 2 feet of snow here in North Fork. I've only seen some small branchs breaking so far. Not as bad as the snow 4 years ago, power was out for 5 days here.

Our 4-Runner - covered... THe Live Oaks behind usually are perky and standing up - not laying down or pushed down to the ground or on the 4-Runner.

I expected Oakhurst and Deadwood Pass/Thornberry to have way more snow than us - we're behind the Bohna Rodeo Grounds... But we got double what they got judging from the rooftop accumulations.

No new snow here. Yesterday about 5 after a a couple hours of no snow, we drove out on 49 toward Nippinawasse...the sky was clearing and sunny from the west and it eventually cleared over Oakhurst. Almost full moon last night.

The snow is not melting here. Yet. The sun peaked thru for a little while...but now it's cloudy and I can see dark clouds to the North (Yosemite way) and overcast Deadwood way.
What to expect? The snow advisory yesterday that was in effect from 4 until 10 pm was obviously dead wrong for our area.

There's icicles outside my window here in downtown Oakhurst. There was quite a bit of snowmelt yesterday afternoon, but now we're in a deep freeze. I woke up at 3AM to a very strange sound--it sounded like someone was pushing a wheelbarrel by my window and dropping big rocks along the way. I heard it again a bit later, and got up to see what it was; it was the sound of ice sheets cracking under the weight of vehicles going in and out of the complex. I'm a bit spooked about driving to work tomorrow over Deadwood down to Fresno due to the ice. If anyone's gone over Deadwood this morning I'd be very interested in hearing how it went.

I thought I would be able to get out for sure with the cables plus the 4 wheel drive. Maybe I did something wrong? Anyone got any advise on how to get up a steep driveway in the snow? YJ - Last time I weighed him, he was 25 lb. He's very big...once a passerby, asked me if he was a cat...the guy wasn't sure, thought he might be a dog! Milo's a big boned, tall cat and while he's a bit overweight, he carries it well. He's a gentle giant...he's neutered, but no cat or dog would want to mess with him due to his intimidating size. Milo loved the fresh powdery snow. He was half running/leaping through it like it was the best thing ever.

JJ-My brother's long steep driveway which is almost like a private road had to be shoveled...don't have to do the whole thing, just two skinny paths for the tires to roll through. Probably harder to do it now after last night's freeze.

Expires 9:00 PM PST on March 15, 2006

Statement as of 12:22 PM PST on March 15, 2006

... Another winter storm heading this way...

A storm system originating in the Gulf of Alaska will track
southeastward during the next two days and bring colder
weather and snow to the higher elevations Friday into Saturday.

Precipitation will move into the central California interior
Thursday night from Fresno County north... then spread southward
into Kern County during the day Friday. Snow levels will start
out between 4500 and 5500 feet Thursday night... lower to 3000
to 4000 feet Friday... and bottom out between 2000 and 3000 feet
early Saturday morning.

While this storm will not be as cold as the storm last weekend...
it has the potential to bring several inches of snow above
3000 feet by Saturday morning and up to a foot or more of new snow
over the Sierra summits.

In the Kern County mountains... there is a possibility of a small
accumulation of snow and ice over the Grapevine Friday night
into Saturday morning. Furthermore... strong and gusty winds
may hamper travel through and below the mountain passes Friday
through Saturday.

Additionally... as a cold and unstable airmass moves into central
California... isolated afternoon thunderstorms may occur in the
San Joaquin Valley Friday and Saturday.

I drove up 41 until the Hwy Patrol were in the road. Kids wanted to see the snow. I didn't want to keep going in the off chance that chains would be required even though I have 4WD. I was eating a BLT.

However, if you drive up that way, please be careful and wary of the idiot tourists stopped about a half mile before the CHP (about 2 miles past Cedar Springs). These people were stopped in the road because snow was barely sticking on the ground, and getting chains out of the trunk. I told them to move it, and that up the road a half mile there were men waiting to help.

Idiots.

Thought about cutting through YLP - but took my chances I could make it to Spinelli.

32 degrees out now - watch out for ice!

How much more snow did we get in the hour before the power surge? All my foot prints are recovered out in the drive way again! Reading everyones posts...I am fairly proud of my driving home on 49 this afternoon!! Never did see a CHP but there were hardly any cars moving North on 49 between 5 and 5:30 pm and then we started seeing groups of vehicles pulled over and stopped in front of the schools and the Hitching Post parking area was full of people waiting to get elsewhere. My biggest excitemnet was the tiny little blue car in front of me for a good part of the way.....YJ, you can appreciate this: the car kept stopping in the middle of the road for no aparent reason other than...oh...it was snowing? At least, the Arizona license plate was a dead give away and as soon as I was able (get this) I passed her! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/stickdance.gif

Then again, I had never heard of using tire chains before I moved here. Uh, snow tires and 4WD, and heck engine block electric cords... but not snow chains.

Everything is so quiet here.

I saw on the tv that there are chains required from Coarsegold to Yosemite, and Oakhurst to Mariposa. Hmmm, but then again, I am sure the roads are plowed, Fresno is always behind.

More to come over night. Would like to see a winter wonderland that husband can't drive through tomorrow.

Beautiful, Surf!

Went to Fresno yesterday, ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL day and evening. Had left from my friend's home in YLP and when we got back sometime after 10pm my car was a popsicle - doors froze shut and had to chip away the crust from the windshield and windows - came off in chunks and sheets. Timidly - I drove home to Indian Lakes - everything was slick on 41 and 417 was icky, icky, icky to drive from Modoc on. 2 inches of fresh snow at my house when I got here. What HAPPENED to the first day of Spring?!?!

You poor thing. You need a sling to keep that shovel near at all times!

We had trees bent over at our place in the last storm (this pic is of our neighbor's Eucalyptus grove that stands about 40 feet tall - they have over 200 trees - they usually are all standing as tall as the one to the right... Eucalyptus and snow don't mix! Many broke, but after the snow melted, they stood back up - amazing nature's resilience) - we got over 1 foot that night - unbelievable!

But last night, just about 3-4 inches. But this morning, ice... waiting for it to thaw before I can get our driveway and on to work!

Latest weather advisory:

Expires 3:00 PM PST on March 26, 2006

Statement as of 3:47 AM PST on March 26, 2006

... Another significant storm headed for the central California
interior Monday night through Tuesday...

A developing storm in the eastern Pacific will bring increasing
precipitation chances Monday night. This initial round of
precipitation will be in the form of sub-tropical moisture... and
snow levels will be relatively high... in the 7000 to 8000 foot
range. The main storm will move through Tuesday afternoon and
evening. As the colder air arrives... snow levels will lower to
4000 to 5000 feet during the day Tuesday. Significant amounts of
lower elevation rains and high elevation snow will be possible.

While it is still a little early on just how much precipitation
will fall... in general a half to one inch rain is possible for the
valley and adjacent foothills... with 2 feet or more of snow in
the southern Sierra at and above 7000 feet. Even in the Kern
County deserts... rains could be briefly heavy at times Tuesday.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite news source for
possible watches and warnings on this developing winter storm.

Mar 27, 2006, 06:12 AM
Winter Storm Warning in effect from 10 PM this evening to 4 am
PST Wednesday...

The National Weather Service in Hanford has issued a Winter Storm
Warning for the southern Sierra Nevada north of Kern
County... which is in effect from 10 PM this evening to 4 am PST
Wednesday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 feet will be possible over the
higher elevations at and above 7000 feet through Tuesday night. In
addition... strong and gusty winds will cause considerable drifting
and blowing of snow.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow...
sleet... and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also
possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.
