The only reason I don't like the snow is that if it starts when I'm at my son's babysitting, I can't come home. Last year, during Jan and Feb, I was only able to get home to my place 9 days! Hopefully if we have snow this year (yeah, I know we will), it won't be as bad as it was last year! I have never learned to drive in the snow, too cowardly I guess, and besides, if my son thinks I'm going to try, he freaks out!

How exciting. It definately feels like snow is a possibility for Oakhurst...it's very, very cold outside. Our highs will be in the 40's the next couple days?...Brrrrr.

Dodgergirl, that sounds sooo cozy! I think it is great when the weather is cold, rainy, snowy, then coming home to a warm fire. Sorry, but we just love winter storms. Just need to be prepared. Or even if you're not, it doesn't last forever.

Last nights weather report had predicted the snow at 5500 feet, about 3 inches, and then at 7000 feet and above there was supposed to be 1-3 feet. So the weathermen said anyway.

Ha! Reading back over the last several posts I almost got nostalgic for summer - NOT! The weather has been so bitterly cold the past several days. Hard to even get warmed up completely. I love seeing the frost covering everything in the morning, seeing the snow covered trees higher up in the mountains, the steam as the sun hits the frost covered ground. But boy do I love coming home at night to that warm wood stove. Yeah, I think winter is here and it is exciting to always be looking forward to the first snow. Only problem is my body is rebeling. What is this? Now it creaks and aches at the first sign of frost and chills ever so much more than it used to do. I actually had to put on gloves last night to get from the car to Long's. I am finding a great joy in electric blankets. Yes, I will probably be welcoming summer back in a few months. But isn't it great that we can long for what we know will be following our situation today. I guess that's called life. Geez, I am so philosophic today - which means I need a little levity in my life like a good snowball fight!

Had a steady light rain all night long. It was a peaceful sound. Today it was so green. Amazing how that can happen overnight with a little rain. This must have been a tropical storm as it was so warm. In Fresno yesterday it was very windy but the wind was warm. Funny looking low clouds. Strange weather.

Well all you rainbirds should be happy now. We've had a steady downpour for about 2 hrs. That warm wind has turned into a cold chill now! All the snowbirds are anxiously awaiting the first snow. I got to throw snowballs tonight!! It is snowing like crazy at the NGI. A guaranteed winter wonderland at the Inn in the morning.
For once, I drew the lucky straw and pulled onto Hwy. 41 behind the snowplow!! It was exactly as Messy described the rain except it was snow...I finally drove into rain right at 4000ft.
Yes, SheilaMae, it is starting to feel a lot like Christmas!!

I figured it would be like that last night. That's why I stayed in Fresno for the night at my son's. It was so windy down here and my granddaughter's skating program wasn't over till 7 pm. I didn't want to drive home in the dark and fight wind and rain. It's still coming down pretty good here in Fresno this a.m., but I'll be starting home in a little bit.

I work in Fresno. I got a message on my phone last night to be careful driving home because the weather was bad. I got off work around 1am, and I didn't hit any rain the whole way home.. Though, the roads were still really wet, so I am guessing it had just stopped.
When it was snowing earlier in the year, I got trapped at work/college more than once. I'm hoping that doesn't happen again.

I spoke to my friend Julie whom lives in Wa. state. This storm killed 3 people. One woman dround in her basement because of flooding. My friend is still without power which most of the state is. The airport was closed and bridges were not stable enough to drive over. Schools were also closed.
This storm is headed this way.
Please be prepared and be careful.

The big problem for Thurs & Fri will be the night time lows. When it drops to 10 to 15 degrees you can get some serious frozen pipe damage. Last time I had some broken pipes - this time I'll probably just shut off the water at night & drain the lines a little. I've got too many outside pipes that could break even though they are covered. I'm not overly fond of repairing pipes in freezing weather.

Another thing we can do on the cold cold nights is to leave a faucet running in the house...just a trickle, but running. And, if you have a well; put install a heat lamp bulb in the pump house. And, unlike me...remember to actually turn it on when the weather turns cold. I had a DUH!! type morning a couple of weeks ago...woke up to no water all because I had not turned on the pump house light!!

Does this really work? if you leave it on a trickel it may take a half an hour to an hour for the pressure tank to drop down to the low pressure switch setting that kicks in pushing new water. In that time can't the water in the pipes freeze at such low temps?

Here is some info I just found I guess the drip thing does work but they are talking about a public water source Hmmmmm.
Winterize your water pipes. - Printable Version
Prepare your plumbing (outside and inside ) for freezing weather. Know what to do during freezing weather and if your pipes freeze or break.
Outside plumbing
Caulk around pipes where they enter the house . Close all foundation vents. (Open foundation vents are probably the greatest cause of frozen or split water lines.) Cut wood or styrofoam blocks to fit vent openings, then slide them into the vents. (Styrofoam is available at hardware stores or from insulation suppliers.) Open the vents again in the spring to prevent dry rot.
Protect outside pipes and faucets. In some homes, the outside faucet has a separate shut-off in the basement. If you have a separate valve for outside faucets, shut if off. Then go outside and turn on all the faucets to drain water in the lines. Leave the outside faucets on while you go back and check your outside shut-off valve for a small brass plug or cap on the valve. Turn this plug far enough that water drains from the valve. Then, tighten the plug back and turn off all the outside faucets.
Wrap outside faucets or hose bibs. Do this if you don't have a separate valve to turn off outside faucets. (Also remember to disconnect garden hoses.) Use newspaper or rags covered with plastic, fiberglass or molded foam insulating covers to wrap the faucet. (Molded foam insulating covers are available at plumbing and hardware stores.)
Drain in-ground sprinkler systems. Check manufacturer's instructions for the best way to do this.
Inside plumbing
Insulate pipes in unheated areas such as the crawl space, attic, garage or basement. Use insulating tape or molded pipe sleeve and wrap it over the entire length of exposed pipe. Cover all valves, pipe-fittings, etc. with insulating tape or fiberglass. (Check your hardware store for supplies.)
Shut off and drain your water system if you are leaving home for several days. (Turn off the water heater before draining the system.) Leaving your furnace on a low setting while you're gone helps, but may not prevent freezing. Turn off the main shut-off valve, then go through the house and turn on all faucets, sinks, tubs, showers, etc., and flush the toilets. Go back to the valve and remove the plug so that it can drain completely. Follow-up by re-tightening the valve and turning off the open faucets.
Open cupboard doors in the kitchen and bathrooms. Water lines supplying the kitchen or bathrooms are frequently located in outside walls. Any air leaks in siding or insulation can cause these pipes to freeze. Leaving the cupboard doors open when the temperature is below freezing allows pipes behind the cupboards to get more heat.
Let the water run if the temperature dips below freezing. (A stream slightly smaller than a pencil width should be sufficient.) Faucets farthest from the street should be the ones left running. Using cold water will save on your gas or electric bill.

Letting the Water Run
Letting a faucet drip during extreme cold weather can prevent a pipe from bursting. It's not that a small flow of water prevents freezing; this helps, but water can freeze even with a slow flow.
Rather, opening a faucet will provide relief from the excessive pressure that builds between the faucet and the ice blockage when freezing occurs. If there is no excessive water pressure, there is no burst pipe, even if the water inside the pipe freezes.
A dripping faucet wastes some water, so only pipes vulnerable to freezing (ones that run through an unheated or unprotected space) should be left with the water flowing. The drip can be very slight. Even the slowest drip at normal pressure will provide pressure relief when needed. Where both hot and cold lines serve a spigot, make sure each one contributes to the drip, since both are subjected to freezing. If the dripping stops, leave the faucet(s) open, since a pipe may have frozen and will still need pressure relief.

Snow? I can see every star in the sky right now (7:53pm) Though it's freezin' cold and very dry at the moment, I wonder if we'll get much precipitation from this system. Forecasts I've seen only predict a 20-30% of rain/snow showers...
I'm waiting with much anticipation for snow...

20 degrees out this morn - no snow, and no ice on the ground (No dew! YAY!)
But, ice definitely in horse troughs and cat bowls... taking hot water (Newcomer's idea) out of the water heater and pouring into their water to help melt the top layer of ice.

We've had the pipes break, well go out, & electric go off so many times over the years that we do some basic preps before storms or freezing weather now. We fill several buckets with water & keep them in the bathrooms. You can either fill the toilet tank with the water or just pour it right into the bowl. We also keep a hudson sprayer just for water. It has 4 spray options & the "wand" part can be removed so you don't have that long stick to deal with. It sure makes kitchen clean up & hand washing easier. (mark it for water only & never put pesticides in it!)

friends of mine in YLP had there hot water pipe break sat. night. No one I mean no one has insullation of any kind. My friend Sunday and I were calling everyone to see if they had extra.
They just got done remodeling the house and thought it was weatherized pretty well.
scary thing is the pipe was buried in 2ft of insullation.
Luckly they have good ins. and the drywallers are coming out today because the house started to stink yesterday.

I always try to have extra pipe insulation on hand just for times like this. There are those pipes that you can sometimes do nothing about but we have been lucky so far. I took the tip that was given here to heart and kept the cold water running just a bit at the farthest faucet from the main water manifold and lucily for the hot water we have a recirulation hot water pump that I usually have on a timer to save propane costs and I turned that on full time and its pipes ren parallel to the other cold water pipe so I think that helped also. I think we are on the up slope of this freeze as it seems to not going as low each night by a couple of degrees. But that is Coarsegold. Some other areas like Oakhurst had a real bad night last night.
You can tell the places that had breaks outside by the frozen ice trail leading from the business

Our pipes are ok, but our heater died on us last night. I woke up this morning to cold air coming out of the registers. Had Oakhurst Air come out and he said we would be better off getting a new unit as the one we have is so old, but he no longer installs new units. So we called another place, but they can't even come out until Thursday to look at what we need. Guess it's just another reason for us to cuddle and keep warm.

Below-freezing nights continue to ice foothills
While local temperature highs are increasing, lows are still expected around 19
By Elizabeth Gabriel
(Updated Wednesday, January 24, 2007, 1:32 PM)
Did somebody say "global warming?" For the last few weeks, you'd have been hard put to get Mountain Area folks talking about Al Gore's signature topic.
We're getting a bit of a respite in the daytime, predicts the National Weather service: Through Sunday, highs should hover around 60. But at night, Oakhurst can expect lows around 19, still cold enough to put a chill in your bones and cause you to run to the wood or pellet pile.
Rod Poplarchick of Climate Control Systems of Oakhurst said he has had to put on extra help to answer the calls of people who need more pellets.
"It's all about preparedness," he said, explaining that some big-box stores in the valley and some consumers failed to lay in a suffcient supply.
That sent users out looking for more. He said he has just received a new shipment and should meet his orders by Friday. The pellets cost from $4 to $5.75 per bag, and the average house uses about 100 bags a year in their stoves.
Talk of propane shortages was apparently just that. A survey of several local companies revealed no difficulty meeting demand.
During the worst of the cold snap, burst and frozen pipes were the watchwords: School rooms became ice rinks, aisles at the new True Value in Oakhurst were off-limits until the floors dried out, people used to showering in the morning had to put it off to the end of the day when the water was flowing. Horse troughs, dog dishes, even swimming pools, had thick layers of ice.
Hardware stores ran out of pipe blankets and - of all things - duct tape.
The long-term weather forecast calls for warming, with highs in the 60s by Feb. 1. But the cold will be back sooner or later, so you'd better be prepared.
Here are some tips from the national Centers for Disease Control and the state Office of Emergency Services. Besides laying in an ample supply of firewood, hot chocolate mixings and blankets, there are many things to remember.
Personal protection:
Dress in layers and make the outer one water- and windproof or wind and water resistant. Wool, silk or polypropylene inner layers will hold more heat than cotton.
If you start to sweat, peel off a layer because damp clothing chills the body rapidly.
Your mother was right: wear a hat, scarf (cover your mouth and nose to protect your lungs from the cold air), sleeves that are snug at the wrist, mittens (they're warmer than gloves) and water-resistant coat and shoes.
Keep as much of your skin covered as you can to prevent frostbite.
Eat well and stay hydrated. Don't make that drink caffeine or alcohol-based. You may think they're warming, but they can make you lose heat faster.
If you're shivering, get inside pronto. It's an important first sign that the body is losing heat.
At home:
Be sure you have plenty of heating fuel and a backup - this is no time to run out of propane. There's always a possibility of a power outage, so plan for some safe form of heat and a way to cook. Do not make that form of heat a barbecue or other heating device intended for use outdoors because deadly carbon monoxide could chill you permanently. Know how to use your fire extinguishers - a popping log from the fireplace can get a blaze going inside at any time.
Keep your cell phone charged and have a battery-operated radio handy.
Break out all the extra blankets.
Make sure you have an adequate supply of prescription medication.
Have plenty of food and water. If the electricity goes out or the pipes freeze, you'll need that water. And if worse comes to worse, melt ice or snow before using it for your water source. Don't eat snow or ice: Remember, you're trying to defeat the cold, not welcome it inside your body.
Insulate your pipes now so they don't freeze later, but learn how to shut off your valves if that does happen. A thaw is coming, and you don't want a flood.
Let faucets drip so the water will keep flowing.
Just because your animals have fur coats, don't make them go without protection. Bring them into the house or make sure they have a snug barn or shed where they can get to unfrozen water and food.
On the road:
If you don't have to go out, don't. If you do have to, check road conditions before you go. The Caltrans is: www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo (http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo) or (800) 427-7623.
Maintain at least a half-tank of gas.
Have good brakes, good tires and chains.
Watch the roads for ice patches and take it easy with the speedometer. It's better to go slow, go back or go around than wind up freezing in a ditch.
Have a cold kit in your car: food, water, blankets, shovel, window scraper and working flashlight are good. So is a change of shoes and clothes in case you get wet. It couldn't hurt to have a brightly colored scarf to tie to the antenna as a signal to rescuers.
If the worst happens:
Know how to recognize the symptoms of exposure.
Confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and shivering are signs of hypothermia. If you see them, get help immediately.
Gray, white or yellow skin discoloration, numbness or waxy skin are symptoms of frostbite. Get medical help. Do not walk on frostbitten feet or toes. Do not rub the area with snow or massage it at all - you can damage the skin. Don't use a heating pad, heat lamp or other strong source; immerse the affected area in warm water or warm it with body heat.
Remove wet clothing and immediately warm the body with blanket, body-to-body contact or warm fluids such as hot cider or soup - this is no time for coffee or alcohol.
If you get stranded, wrap your entire body including your head, in extra clothing, blankets, or newspapers.
Stay awake; you'll be less vulnerable to cold-related health problems.
Run the motor of your car about 10 minutes per hour with a window open slightly to let in air. Make sure snow is not blocking the exhaust pipe.
Move legs and arms to keep your circulation going and to stay warmer.

Severe Weather Alert
Statement as of 6:00 AM PST on February 20, 2007
... A significant winter storm may affect the mountains of central
California later this week...
A cold Pacific weather system taking shape in the Gulf of Alaska
is expected to move into and across central California Wednesday
night through Friday morning. So far this winter, snowfall in the
Sierra has been rather light and snow pack is well below normal.
There is the potential for this incoming winter weather system to
drop over two feet of snow over the Sierra from Kings Canyon to
Yosemite park, while lesser amounts are possible from Sequoia Park
southward to Kern County.
Forecast models are projecting that quite a bit of cold air will
accompany this storm, and snow levels may fall to 3000 to 4000 feet
or slightly lower by Friday morning. This would bring the threat
of accumulating snow into the foothills as well as the Grapevine
and Tehachapi Pass.
Travelers are advised to monitor weather forecasts over central
California if their travel plans include a trip into the higher
elevations later this week. Winter storm watches and/or warnings
may be needed for this potential winter weather event. Stay tuned
to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite media source for updates
on this winter storm.

Now
A steady rain will continue to fall across the east central San Joaquin Valley through 2 PM. Some of the rain will be moderate to locally heavy at times and will cause reduced visibility for travelers on area roads. The back edge of the band of steady rain was currently working eastward across the west central San Joaquin Valley and as of 12 PM extended from a line roughly running from Merced southward to Coalinga. Spotty showers will still be possible this afternoon as the atmosphere remains unstable across the west central San Joaquin Valley. Further east in the foothills of Mariposa...Madera and Fresno counties snow levels continue to lower and based on spotter reports were currently down to around 2500 feet. Snow levels will continue to drop across the foothills this afternoon as colder air works into the region. Travelers in the foothills should be alert for rapidly changing weather conditions and the potential for slick spots on untreated and less traveled roadways.

Statement as of 5:39 AM PST on February 27, 2007
... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 2 PM PST

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 2 PM PST
Wednesday for the Sierra Nevada and foothills from Yosemite
to the Kern County line.
Moderate to heavy snow has fallen overnight over the Sierra and
foothills at elevations above 3000 feet as a strong cold Pacific
storm system moves across central California. Remote weather
sensors indicate that more than 2 feet of new snow has fallen in
several locations above 6000 feet.
Colder air will continue to infiltrate into the region today and
widespread snow showers will develop later this morning. In
addition to the heavy snow snow showers, strong west to northwest
winds will cause blowing and drifting of snow, especially over
ridges. An additional 1 to 2 feet of snow is possible before the
storm system moves east of the Sierra Wednesday afternoon.
In the foothills, snow has fallen at elevation as low as 3000
feet, however thus far at larger population centers, the rain has
not yet turned to snow. This should change shortly as even colder
air arrives. In heavier showers, the snow level may fall to less
than 2000 feet. Up to several inches of snow is possible by Wednesday
morning as bands of snow showers continue to affect the foothills.
A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow are
expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will
make travel very hazardous or impossible.

SNOW!! No Fair!! I have ugly black clouds in the front yard and sunshine in the backyard and the only tiny bit of excitement was the one minute the power was out!
I am happy to have had this little break today though. I had to move a truck load of stuff from the lower wood shed up to the garage. I was going to do this today rain or no rain. It was much nicer without the rain though!

Anyways, I also use Photoshop -- I can resize my digital shots - those are at 450 x 300 I think...
But the ones from earlier today I put on our personal website and then linked to them (using the posting button (on the green toolbar when you post) that looks like a landscape photograph (URL), then paste the properties of the shot I copy from the website photo properties).

A Pacific storm will reach the central California interior by
midday Monday... and spread rain southward during the afternoon and
evening. There will be a chance of snow in the foothills above 3000
feet around daybreak Tuesday as the coldest air moves into the
region. The unsettled weather is expected to continue into
Tuesday. Temperatures will cool to below normal with the
storm... and will be as much as 15 degrees cooler than the
conditions felt over the weekend.
The airmass with the storm will be very cold and unstable.
Thunderstorms will be possible Tuesday through the early evening
over the central and southern San Joaquin Valley... and the Sierra
Nevada foothills.

Statement as of 2:00 PM PDT on April 09, 2007
... A Pacific storm to reach central California Wednesday...
The next east Pacific storm will reach the central California
interior Wednesday morning. While there remains some uncertainty
about the strength and track of the storm... it has the potential to
bring light rain to the region with a few inches of new snow to the
higher elevations.
Snow levels are forecast to fall to around 4500 feet near Yosemite
by Thursday morning... and to 5000 to 5500 feet in the mountains of
Kern and Tulare counties. Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches will
be possible before the storm moves east of the region Thursday.
The storm also is forecast to bring gusty winds to the mountains and
deserts. A high wind watch has been issued for the Kern County
mountains and deserts for Wednesday and Wednesday night. For the
rest of the southern Sierra Nevada... winds over the higher terrain
could reach sustained speeds of 30 mph... with gusts to 60 mph. These
winds could create areas of drifting and blowing snow.
People planning travel into the mountains Wednesday or Wednesday
night should check the latest forecasts and be prepared for winter
driving conditions.

Statement as of 6:17 AM PDT on September 19, 2007
... Much cooler with Rain... Mountain snow... and wind Wednesday night
through Saturday for the central California interior...
The first significant weather system of the season is continuing
to take shape over the Pacific northwest today and it is forecast
to move south into the central California interior beginning late
tonight and linger through Friday.
Forecast models have come into much better agreement in
projecting that the Canadian low will drop southward into
northern California by late today... reaching central California
by mid day on Thursday. The models then diverge in their solutions
concerning where the upper low will track on Friday and into Saturday.
Some of the guidance is indicating a more westward track off the
coast... which would mean a drier forecast for most of the
region... especially the Sierra. This is mainly due to the moisture
remaining near the center of the circulation and would be confined
to the coastal region where locally heavy amounts or rain could
occur. Some other guidance is bringing the upper low center right
along the coast and this would be favorable for moisture to make
it into the valley and possibly into the Sierra. And the final
solution is the upper low would track along the Sierra and would
remain completely moisture starved and would only bring some isolated
showers to the mountains. Confidence is still pretty low at this
time on which track the upper low will take beyond Thursday. We are
trending the forecast to indicate it will track right along the
coast and will bring some precipitation into the region. The upper
low is now forecast to exit the region by Friday night and
clearing would be in time for weekend activities.
Right now... the system is moisture starved and may not have
enough moisture to produce any significant precipitation tonight
across the region... however we have put in a threat of rain and
High Mountain snow over the Sierra Nevada and over Merced
County tonight... then as the low moves southward... possibly
towards Point Conception on Thursday... a more widespread threat
of light rain showers may occur... but mainly along the west side
of the valley. The low is then forecast to linger off the coast near
Point Conception Friday and begin to move NE Friday night and this
will shift the threat of precipitation southward into the Kern
County mountains and deserts... as well as the southern Sierra
Nevada. On the south facing slopes of the Kern County
mountains... locally heavy rain will be possible Friday and Friday
night.
This storm system has plenty of cold air to work with and
temperatures will be much colder over the entire area. High
temperatures on Thursday and Friday will be as much as 20 degrees
lower than today and snow is possible in the mountains above 6500
feet. As the colder air arrives... winds will be on the increase
and very windy conditions are likely over the Sierra crest... the
Kern County mountains and deserts today through Thursday.
Although the calendar says late September... hikers... campers and
other outdoor enthusiasts should be prepared for winter-like
conditions and prepare accordingly.

updates on this situation.

Loved it, Loved IT, LOVED IT!!!
(Now, 4 years ago, you would never have heard me saying that about rain in So Cal)
But have been doing a rain dance hoping for lots of rain and snow pack this year - the water issues are so great for all - and hearing about all those wells going dry lately... we need the rain so badly! And the oaks, and the pines and the Buckeyes and the wildlife...
And I LOVE when it greens things up around here!

I was watching the lightning storm up here from down in Fresno last night at my son's. Absolutely awesome! We got some rain down there, but no thunder and lightning where he lives. The sky was beautiful, but deadly I know. We heard the emergency alert on the radio for the hail and lightning as we were going to John's Incredible Pizza. Actually, since I'm afraid of thunder and lightning, I was glad I was down there and not here (yeah, I know, the big toughie is a woosie)

Snow? Sounds fun. Nothing here at 3400 feet on Road 222--just a few sprinkles. Must be scattered showers. Lets hope for a wet year!

Ironhorse, I think you're ok. It's just snowing off and on and not really sticking on the roads, just a bit in the trees, on the rails, etc.

Mysteefied bite your tongue (or typing fingers!) :-D My mom sent me a message saying that they got a heavy hail at 3200 feet, no snow, then it iced a little, then a heavy rain that melted the hail and it was 41 degrees when she sent that. Oh well, I just got stuck here till Sunday morning, so it should all be over by then, LOL.
