We just got home. Earlier today I was driving thru North Fork after picking Davy up from school. I had a packed car and as we were coming up the 200 a lightening bolt hit the road just as I passed. The car shook (I thought we blew out the tires) and I saw a big flash in my side view mirror. David was in the back seat & covered the baby in his carseat... the car recovered after a few seconds (I swear we were off the road), I know I had loss of steering for a few seconds... my window was partially open and my face tingled with electricity for a few minutes after it hit. Cristina just sat in a stunned silence...
I didn't think lightening would hit the road, but now I know otherwise...
What a weird day...

Unbelievable lighting show last night - we sat and watched after unplugging TVs and computer. I didn't think to grab my camera til it was almost over (dummy me!) But got a couple shots.

Here are a couple pix taken from our place in Coarsegold - we got to watch the lightning to the south (Fresno) and West (Chowchilla/Merced) both moving up our way. Thankfully we had NO hail. Only rain.

My granddaughter was telling me yesterday how scared she was. They were coming home from the rink in Fresno and a bolt of lightning hit close to them on the road. Then when they got home, the whole street was flooded, with water halfway up their driveway. About 4 more feet and the dogs (who were in the garage) would have been taking refuge on the workbenches! I've never seen their street flood like that, and all the debris left behind, silt, leaves, branches.................. I didn't see the lightning storm, I close all my curtains and stay away from windows. Only thing I hate worse than lightning/thunder are snakes and spiders.

Got curious this afternoon and looked at Fresno monthly rainfall back through the 1878 water year. This year has been the 13th driest in history through the end of November, continuing a series of very dry falls. Last year was the 12th driest and the year before was the 6th driest through November. The approximate chances for a below normal precipitation year in Fresno are now up to 75%. Hope for a year like 2005-2006, where we had 0.26 inches through November and 14.56 after (and, of course, a hell of a lot more than that up here!).

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 4 PM this afternoon
to 10 PM PST Friday for the southern Sierra Nevada from Yosemite
park to the Kern County line.

A winter storm will move toward central California today... then
across the area tonight and Friday. Moderate to heavy snow will
occur in the southern Sierra Nevada this evening and will
continue into Friday evening. Snow levels could fall as low as
4000 feet by Friday afternoon. Two to 3 feet of new snow will be
possible in and around Yosemite park above 6000 feet... with 1 to
2 feet around Sequoia Park... tapering off to less than a foot
near the Kern County line. Strong and gusty winds over ridge tops
near the crest will create considerable blowing and drifting
snow.

The snow will diminish Friday night... but snow showers will
linger into the weekend... especially near the crest.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow...
sleet... and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also
possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

Well at our place in Coarsegold we had quite a lot of rain last night. Rain gauge says a little over 2" But KK just called me on her way to work and there is SNOW on 415 and Trabuco also on the 416 (Spinelli Rd.). Very strange since they both are lower altitude than our place. It is melting fast though. Very heavy winds at our place also last night as the cell passed right over us and the lightning was right on top of us.

The thunder that was over us all morning long(12:00am- 4:30am) was so loud and the rain it sounded like someone turned the hose on and was standing over our house.
I never seen the lightening i don't know why but the winds were strong also.. a bit of a storm that we had. My husband has been decorating the city of fresno christmas tree and the lighting it tonight I guess it is a mess down there. They are running around trying to get everything back together for tonight. I pray they are able. is there more rain coming? at least the kids were able to walk to the bus this morning without getting soaked...

yeah snow always dropping around me..that is what you get when you live outside of the box...laughing...

everyone be careful driving the road today!

The Thunder was so loud and booming I couldn't believe it!!!

I almost gave up trying to get back to sleep at 3:00 a.m. - the lightning and thunder was just non-stop!

Amazed to see snow this morning on the 415 and down along Spinelli (417)... and it WAS snow - not hail - the real powder stuff... but only for a small section of about 5 miles.

Winter arrives as snow blankets higher elevations

By Elizabeth Gabriel (egabriel@sierrastar.com)
<!--/STORYHEADLINE--><!--STORYBODY--> (Updated Wednesday, December 12, 2007, 5:17 PM)

You could hear the joy in Kenny Karst's voice Friday morning.
<!-- BEGIN Component: SierraStar : component/storylevel/photo.comp -->
<!-- BEGIN Component: SierraStar : component/storylevel/mainimage.comp --> <table align="right" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="252"><tbody><tr><td> <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="252"><tbody><tr><td>http://www.sierrastar.com/ips_rich_content/561-kstar_p1212_tenaya.jpg

</td></tr></tbody></table> <!-- END Component: SierraStar : component/storylevel/mainimage.comp -->
"It's snowing now," he said. "From my office I can see the flakes floating down from the heavens."
Karst is the go-to guy at Delaware North Companies, which runs the concessions at Yosemite National Park. His office is in the park, so he pretty much always has quite a view.
But he loved seeing that heaven-sent snow.
Delaware North also operates Badger Pass ski area in the park, and he was sweating its opening planned for this Friday.
"It's been snowing steadily since 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon," Karst said. "It's not snowing heavily, but it has been steady, and that's good news."
Badger believes in Mother Nature. No snow-making machines for it. So it was really important for the old gal to come through.
By Monday morning, the tone in his voice had changed. A deflated Karst reported that Badger had gotten only 14 inches of snow and that wasn't enough to safely open the ski runs.

A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Thursday evening
through Saturday morning for the southern Sierra Nevada... from
Yosemite to the Kern County line.

Snow is expected to begin by Thursday afternoon... before
increasing in intensity Thursday night and Friday. Heaviest snow
accumulations can be expected Friday and Friday night... before
beginning to decrease a bit Saturday. Total snow accumulations
from Thursday night through Saturday morning are still somewhat
uncertain... but will likely be several feet. The snow level will
start out around 7000 feet Thursday... lowering to 6000 to
6500 feet Friday... then to 4500 to 5000 feet Saturday.

In addition to the snow... strong southwest winds will develop
over the Sierra crest Thursday night and continue into Saturday.
This will create blizzard or near blizzard conditions above
8000 feet.

A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant
snow... sleet... or ice accumulations that may impact travel.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Howling winds, pelting rain and heavy snow pummeled California on Friday, toppling trees, flipping big rigs, cutting power to more than a million people and threatening mudslides in fire-scarred areas.

Flights were grounded in Northern California as gusts reached 80 mph during the second wave of an arctic storm that sent trees crashing onto houses, cars and roads. Forecasters expected the storm to dump as much as 10 feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada by Sunday.

The heavy snow was slowing search efforts for a family believed to be missing in the mountains, authorities said.

Highways from Sacramento to the San Francisco were closed because of debris or toppled big rigs blocking lanes, and local roads were flooded.

"A huge tree, over 100 years old, just fell across the house. It just wrecked the whole thing," said Faye Reed, whose daughter Teenia owns the damaged home north of Sacramento. "They won't be able to live in it. The whole ceiling fell in, and now it's raining inside."

More than a million people from the Bay Area to the Central Valley were in the dark. Crews worked to restore power, but it could be days before all the lights are on, said Pacific Gas & Electric spokeswoman Darlene Chiu.

Well, it's not local weather for you folks but

January 1, 2008 started off with a nice freeze and some light snow at our place out here. Didn't mind, since I was off recovering from a severe case of overtime.

Took some shots of the cave/waterfall. Low's have ranged between 8 and 19 degrees F at night. Things are warming up now so had to get the pics before they drop.

.Very cold air and moisture from the Pacific will bring a
continued threat of heavy snow in the Sierra Nevada and significant
snow to the Sierra foothills above 3500 feet as well as the Kern
County mountains above 4000 feet through late Sunday evening.
Heavily traveled mountain passes in Kern County such as Tejon Pass
over the Grapevine and Tehachapi Pass will be affected by snow.

... Winter Storm Warning now in effect until midnight PST Sunday

The Winter Storm Warning is now in effect until midnight PST
Sunday night for the Sierra Nevada from Yosemite to the Kern
County line.

Snow will continue... heavy at times... today through Sunday
evening. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 4 feet are likely
above 7000 feet through Sunday evening. Snow levels will be
around 4500 to 5000 feet through this evening then colder air will
arrive driving snow levels down to less than 4000 feet though
Sunday evening.

In addition to the snow... strong southwest winds will affect the
the higher elevations until midday Sunday and create considerable
blowing and drifting snow with local whiteout conditions. Local
wind gusts of 80 mph or higher will occur along the Sierra crest
through Sunday morning.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow are
expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will
make travel very hazardous or impossible.

Persons should curtail their travel plans through the weekend if
their destination includes the mountains and National Parks. Many
roads leading into the higher elevations will either be closed or
require chains during this time. Please check ahead to determine
travel plans.

Update through the end of December:
A good December in Fresno (2.31 inches) bumped this year up to 55th driest through 12/31 since 1878. The odds of having a drier than normal year declined to 72%. This does not include January, which already has a total 1.58 inches.

Statement as of 7:30 PM PST on January 19, 2008

A cold storm system over the Great Basin will begin to impact
central California weather as early as tomorrow night and possibly
continue through Thursday.

A cold storm system over Idaho Sunday will begin to move to the
south and west. As the storm draws nearer in the afternoon... there
will be an increasing chance of rain and high elevation snow
around the Yosemite area Sunday night in the southern Sierra as a
very strong cold front moves through the region Sunday evening.

The cold front will move through the area relatively dry but will
usher in very cold air into the region late Sunday night. Gusty
winds will be associated with the front as it pushes across the
interior central California Sunday night and into Monday morning.

The second surge of Arctic air gets better organized off the
central California coast associated with an upper low by Tuesday
and moves south along the coast into Wednesday. A break in the
weather may occur on Monday and Tuesday... however the timing and
intensity of this system is still uncertain and the exact track of
the storm is also uncertain at this time. Models suggest that the
low will get organized off the central coast by Wednesday and move
onshore Thursday and into Thursday night.

The total amount of rain and snow this system will bring is still
a large question mark... as it is highly dependent on exactly how
much of the storm travels over water and the exact track of the
storm. At this time this storm looks like it will drop around one
half inch of rain in most valley areas... although the potential
exists for totals over one inch along favored upslope areas and
locally heavy snow amounts into the southern Sierra.

People planning travel into or through the mountains and deserts
this week should be aware that these areas will likely be impacted
by this developing storm system.

Please stay tuned to the latest National Weather Service forecasts
and statements as this weather situation develops.

A Snow Advisory for the southern Sierra Nevada... north of Kern

Storm Watch remains in effect from Thursday afternoon through
Friday afternoon.

Snow showers this afternoon and tonight will accumulate 4 to
7 inches at 4000 feet with as much as 11 inches above 7000 feet.

A Snow Advisory means that periods of snow will cause primarily
travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and
limited visibilities... and use caution while driving.

Another storm system dropping southward along the West Coast of
the United States will spread precipitation into interior central
California once again. Another round of accumulating snow is
possible... with accumulations of as much as a foot or more in the
high country. Anyone planning extended trips to the mountains
should be prepared for wintry conditions... carry chains and a

I have one of those Mr Heater thingys that attaches to a propane bottle so I was able to keep warm, but no water, and like you say NO PC! LOL - so that accounts for the short legs! He's very cute anyway - even with long legs! Also I have to comment on KK and YW's dogs as well - hey no favoritism here - all your dogs are adorable. I'm just hankering for a Corgi lately - don't know why. Oh, back to the weather - It has been heavy sleet here and rain most of the day and very cold. It is quite awful - reminds me of my home on the east coast - when there was no snow it was just a heavy, cold, damp yucky atmosphere. Like...... Philly!

Nope school is on, which is frustrating. Since chains are required at the Mariposa line (about 2 miles up from me) and 3 miles north of Coarsegold. So why the bus would pick up my children with no chains on and the roads with two inches of snow is beyond me.

Slick driving conditions possible over the foothills and
Kern County mountains...

Cold air behind a cold front has lowered snow levels to 1600 feet
in Mariposa and Madera counties and to around 3500 feet in the
Tulare foothills and Kern County mountains. Scattered showers
moving through the area will provide brief periods of moderate
snow. An inch or two of snow will be possible below pass level
resulting in hazardous Road conditions. This includes Interstate 5
over the Grapevine and Highway 58 over Tehachapi Pass and 178 over
Walker Pass.

Statement as of 11:50 AM PST on February 02, 2008

... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 6 PM this evening
to midnight PST Sunday night for the southern Sierra Nevada and the
Tehachapi Mountains...

The National Weather Service in Hanford will allow a Winter Storm
Warning to remain in effect from 6 PM this evening to midnight
PST Sunday night for the southern Sierra Nevada and the Tehachapi
Mountains.

The next Pacific storm will reach the region later today and
continue through Sunday. Snow levels will fall to 3500 feet by
Sunday afternoon. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 3 feet will be
possible above 5000 feet in the southern Sierra Nevada. In
addition... strong gusty winds may create areas of blowing and
drifting snow.

In the Kern County mountains... although snow accumulations will
be less... the combination of low snow levels and gusty winds will
impact travel through the Walker Pass beginning late tonight. By
Sunday afternoon... snow will fall on the Grapevine and on the
Tehachapi Pass... and the mix of snow and gusty winds will hinder
travel between the San Joaquin Valley and Southern California.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow...
sleet... and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also
possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio... or your favorite news source...

Well, this is the most snow we have had all year. We have about a foot. In some places it is more. I just walked down to Dodgergirls house and there were a few places where I sank up to my knee. Try walking in a foot of snow with straight legs (I have JRA). It's not easy.

I attempted to drive Dodgergirls Subaru from her house to mine and it wasn't having it. It took us almost an hour just to get it back in her driveway. Then, another neighbor came along in a Subaru and got stuck. Four wheel drive trucks and SUV's are getting through with no problem. I'm reconsidering buying an AWD car... I may end up going with a 4WD truck or SUV instead. It's times like these that I miss my Jeep.

BTW: It's still snowing here in Teaford and they have yet to plow us.

Its nice to see the snow come down (on weekends!) But now, glad no snow.

What a difference 8 hours makes - Table Mountain on the way to work this morning... and Table Mountain on the way home this evening...

Beautiful pics KK! The last few nights that I have driven to work, the sunsets over the valley have been GORGEOUS! Im like, wish I had time to stop for pics. This morning is absolutely gorgeous so Princess Topaz and I took a walk. Blue Heron lake was pretty this am with the mist rising off the lake and the herons on the water. I was going into the clubhouse to vote after work and OF COURSE did not have my camera and knew that if I ran home and got it, the mist would be gone along with the photo op. * note to self* put camera back in car.

Hi everyone,
I'm new here. Does anyone know what the weather like in April of this year? I've booked my trip to Bass Lake in April 10, 2008, any advise? Thanks.

Could be warm, could be cold; I believe it was two years ago we had snow in May...
The definitive factor is what kind of weather are you hoping for? There are so many activities for both summer/winter fun, but I don't believe there will be too much Lake activity, that is, unless we continue this warming trend and the lake fills early..., but I think that's just wishful thinking on my part.

Summer activities generally do not begin until May. That is when the lake gets full and it is warm enough to enjoy it. Although the lake really isn't warm until the end of May. Most likely, it will be too cold to get in the lake in April. In fact, March is often our wettest month and sometimes that rolls over to the beginning of April. However, we may be surprised and get an early spring.

I do remember a few years ago we had snow in April one week and 90 degree weather the following week. I had friends that went snowboarding in the morning and wakeboarding in the afternoon. Although April is generally the month that people wear wet suits if wakeboarding on Bass Lake. The fresh snow melt is pretty cold.

So, I would say that you should be prepared for winter and summer weather. You may get a bit of both when you are here. Make sure you have snow chains for your car. You are required by law to carry them if the roads have snow on them.

April? Hoo, boy. Last year, it was pouring rain. The year before, too. I think that it's been 5 years since it was nice and sunny on my birthday in early April... doesn't mean it won't be nice, but it will likely be chilly and messy. There are still nice hikes to do.

Badger Pass closes ... a week after Easter? So there won't be downhill skiing, but the Glacier Point Road might still be open for snow play.
