WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A strong earthquake rumbled in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday and was felt across the southeastern United States, the U.S. Geological Service said.

The quake, with a magnitude of 6.0, came from about 6.2 miles (10km) below the Gulf surface, about 250 miles south-southwest of Apalachicola, Florida.

The tremor hit at 10:56 a.m. EDT (1456 GMT) and was felt in parts of Florida, Louisiana, Georgia and Alabama. Media reports from Tampa, Florida, said residents reported feeling their buildings vibrate for up to 20 seconds.

hmmm...

Maybe a new Magma plume is on the rise...

We could have new islands in the gulf in a few centuries...

mtn eagle... you arent far off. There is a hot springs up near Mammoth..... between Crowley Lake and Mammoth... it used to be open to hot spring soaking.. but cos of geo thermal shift/activity... the springs are closed. now tell me.. possible magma activity? I think so.

Yeah, since 1980 it's gotten busy under Long Valley Caldera...

You also know I'm sure, that the hot springs on the West side of the Sierra's are connected to it's activity too, such as those above North Fork and near Huntington Lake, etc.

About 4 years ago there was a 4.3 eqrthquake centered about 8 miles South of Oakhurst, and about 10 miles down...
