I voted for just one but I am a member of the Mountain Bear Fan Club and spend my weekends looking for Teddy Bears or other stuffed animals.I hit all 3 of the Oakhurst stores and every couple of weeks I go over to Coarsegold. I also attend the garage and yard sales.

I love thrift shopping. I have gotten so many deals, I like to find stuff and sell it on e-bay. You just never know what you are going to find. But, A month ago I went to the heartland one, I was looking at the dresses and pulled one off the rack, There was a HUGE scorpian on it..black..SWEAR..I screamed that was so scary..not your usual small oakhurst scorpian..isnt that wierd? I never find anything at that one..they need to weed out thier stuff. Love the candled egg and the community thrift shop. I always find something at those, they are clean and organized.

a black one?? arent those emperial scorpians...poisonous? How scary!!
Ive found a lot of great finds at the Heartland one, but youre right, they need to rotate the clothes a little better. Not bad for volunteers though!
Right now Im looking for some super tacky luggage. Im thinking bright yellow with big red flowers or something. If anyone find that please let me know!

I used to go to the NF one all the time.. hella cheap prices.. the stuff wasn't so good though.. I found a lot of good books there http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/stretch.gif
I don't like the Candled Egg so much.. I like Heartland ok.. it is pretty cramped there.. but I have found awesome mushroom stuff there for my kitchen.
The Methodist store is by far the best organised, but I hate, HATE, HATE that they have such nice things (quilt racks, tables) that they refuse to sell. They are a thrift store ya know? It isn't like the stuff is never going to be replaced.. I don't know.. it frustrates me.
Anyone been to the thrift store in Coarsegold?

I go to all of 'em. Don't know what I'd do without Thrift Stores! Concerned - I'm always lookin' for Black Bear stuff cuz we have a black lab named Bear and it fits with the rustic, cottage/cabin decor I like.
That scorpion at Heartland freaks me out......ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!! Just bought a basketful of clothes there to send to my younger sis in OH who just recently became wheelchair bound and wanted some oversize clothing easy to get in and out of...
My favorite is Candled Egg with the Coarsegold Village one second. I might even head to both before going home after work today! Would like to find a small indoor/outdoor table......

I don't know if anyone noticed but the 41 Trading Post has moved across the street into the old car parts building. The Candled Egg is going to be taking over the old Trading Post spot with a second store called Candled Egg Collectables. Antiques, vintage items and of course collectables. It will be a high end Candled Egg.
When I was still undecided about moving up here but visiting quite often, I remeber there being several of these types of stores in town. It will be nice to have one close by the house even if it is just for window shopping. I just hope their prices will still be in reach for my budget!

I don't know the name of it, but I like the big one in the building that used to be the Snowline Restaurant up on the 41. And they have a really neat kittie cat there, too! The only problem is, it can be challenging to turn left from their parking lot -- kind of a dangerous curve there.

I actually thought to ask this very question while there yesterday. The lady said Heartland was expanding and needed their space back. She also said Hwy 41 frontage is a better location for the business. Can't miss the huge thrift store sign over the door...that's for sure

For all of you mothers and grandmothers who shop thrift stores for "dress-up boxes" for little girls, where are your favorite stores? My granddaughter will be 3 in a few weeks and she just loves to dress- up. I went to some of the thrift stores in Oakhurst and was a little shocked at their prices, I guess everything is "vintage" now. I am looking for big floppy hats, bridal Vail, shoes. I found one bridal Vail and it was old and I would have had to do major work on it, sewing beads back on it, I asked the price and she said oh, how about $13.50. I laughed and said I want it for a dress-up box for my granddaughter and she didn't offer to go lower. There are 2 shops in Coarsegold, the new clutter closet where Rust Brothers used to be and the thrift store connected to Stoney Creek Church, I think I will try them tomorrow. Any others that might have some good stuff but not expensive? Any other ideas for little girls dress-up boxes, I am new at this we have all boys, I am so good at picking out baseball and golf gloves and tennis rackets.

dancingqueen - did you go to the one by Community United Methodist? They often have 'dress -up' style things and their things are a set price by category. Haven't been there in a while myself though. There's also a new thrift shop in Coarsegold further down 41 next to the UHaul place...haven't stopped in there because it seems awkward to get in and out in 'traffic' but I didn't know Clutter Closet had gone where Rust Bros was...interesting...

My mom was just here for a cocktail and I was laughing and telling her about my experience at the thrift stores today and coming home empty handed. She reminded me of the one at the Methodist Church. She and I are going to check it out tomorrow and also the ones in Coarsegold. Thanks for the info about the one by u-haul, I will check that out too.

Maybe the prices at Thrift Stores go up as so many people lose their jobs and are priced out of more expensive stores? Just a thought...

It really looked to me as if some of the "thrift stores" have turned into vintage stores" like the one where Granny Fanny's bread store is. Very nice and well displayed, everything was clean. When I walked in I knew they were not going to have dress-up clothes but I was fascinated and looked around. Some of the others were just plain junk stores with high prices.

Our little thrift store over here in North Fork, is like a good "old fashioned" thrift store, (or more like a thrift store is *supposed* to be!!!) Their prices arent inflated and what I consider outrageous, like others have gotten to be up here~ rolleyes: They are only open on Tues and Thurs however, 10 -2 (or maybe till 3 pm....not sure!) but its a fun little church thrift shop! You never know what you will find, trash to treasure! lol

I hit the jack pot today. The first thrift store I went to was the new one on 41 next to the u-haul store. Very nice owners and very nice merchandise, very well displayed and clean. VERY good prices. The owner even went looking in the back for things she thought might be nice for a dress-up box. I bought several things in there. Next stop was the new location of the clutter closet on 41 where the rust brothers used to be. Hardly anything was priced, when I asked about an item and told her I was looking for items for my granddaughter's dress-up box, she said everything here is vintage, I said, so how much is this (it was a kimono not in good shape), she said, I don't know the owner is out of town. We left. Then we went to the Stoney Creek church thrift shop and they were delightful and helpful and I found several things there. Next to the Methodist Church thrift shop, very nice people, very clean and well displayed I only found one dress in there. I had never been in the Kids Connection before and I am glad I stopped buy, first of all she had a large dress-up box that holds the clothes, very nice I did get several things in there. So I was successful, I am happy. Granddaughter will be delighted. Her birthday is not until the 3rd so I won't put this in the mail just yet, still looking for a bridal vail, floppy hat.

I took the time to go down to the Cherry Avenue Swapmeet in Fresno- i think it's worth the drive. I actually wanted to take down some of my stuff that didn't sell at our garage sale since they sell a booth for $15 a day and they have 11,000 people walk through. I was tired of sitting at my garage sale the whole day to have maybe ten people stop by so I thought of going there for one day. There is also a swapmeet at the Fresno fairgrounds on Sundays. I like the idea of going to one place with rows and rows of stuff that has something different at every turn- a good mixture of new product booths and good old garage sale finds. Many times I've struck it rich there- from great deals on new socks to bird food to outdoor play equipment to good toys for a quarter. By good, I mean just about every fourth booth has a grab bag of action figures and toy cars and charge a quarter or close to it. I give my three kids a couple quarters each and we've always come home happy. Plus they have a farmers market section and pony rides. Worth the drive.
