Need suggestions on who's selling firewood now in the area and what's the best kind to buy for fireplace to get the maximum heat and least smoke.

Thanks! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

We love Oak because it burns really hot and lasts a long time. Our wood guy just moved to Texas so we need to find someone new to start buying from.

Johns Firewood in the Valley has some good Fruitwood. I have his card in my store but I think he has an add in the classifieds

You can also call George at 642-7367. He sells quality oak as well as pine at decent prices. Before I lost my woodstove I used to use him and I was not disappointed.

Are they still selling outta those boxes on the 49? The street before Kaiser... You can usually pick up a few days worht there, and theres people on the 426 who have a sign out for firewood for sale, don't know the type, though.
We just had some delivered today, but he's been promising to deliver for the past few months... aggghh, (paid for since Sept.)
Is wood your only source of heat?

There is the guy on 426 right at John West rd...I'll have his number later.

Man this is ultra familiar!! We just paid 230 bucks for propane just under a month ago. The guy came out and put in 126 gallons. We were already under 5%... 311 dollars for this month. Good grief, not only does my husband not bring in the wood that has been sitting out front since we moved in (mind you it is very little) he says that we shouldn't waste money on any more this winter. Ummm.. yeah.

Argh!

We are gonna take a drive up the 426 tomorrow to see what we can find. We also have heating (propane) but our gas is under 20% now! We don't have a choice tonight but to run the heater. I hate waking up in the mornings with a "heater headache" though. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/sick.gif

Nascar, let me know what you find out about Rd. 426 guy - we're in the same boat - never figured on this severe weather lingering on. My propane bill is very high but they are letting us pay per month. Still, even the monthly payment is high - hate to use it.

I'm also looking for wood, hubby has been cutting up pallets for fires. I refuse to use the heater and the pallets if you get the real good ones get the woodstove going and heat up the house really nice. I am soooo looking forward to the nicer weather.

I see the price goes up higher as ppl get desperate for more wood as the winter creeps along.

Newcomer
Mar 21, 2006, 05:41 AM
I hate price gougers. People that try to take advantage. The wood that the are selling now took no more effort than the wood they cut last year.

monkey
Mar 21, 2006, 06:24 AM
Yeah, but people are allowed to sell for what the market will bear. My rooms in the winter are $79, but the same room in the summer costs $140.00. The money we make in the summer helps offset the money we lose in the winter. Ya gotta make hay while the sun shines.

Yosemite_Wolf
Mar 21, 2006, 08:13 AM
oops. Didnt mean to start anything here. Hotel room prices are one thing... thats a holiday expense. but wood? come on.. The wood only gets better as it sits and dries out. And if they want to get rid of the wood before it gets to wet from the rain.. you think theyd sell for the same price? I dunno. Its bad enough they kill us for propane prices!

Newcomer
Mar 21, 2006, 11:59 AM
People expect hotel rooms to vary depending on season like monkey says but firewood I would think would remain the same. But I guess I am wrong. I was not trying to start trouble, you know me http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

Yeah, you are both a couple of "rabble rousers"
http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif (I don't even really know what a rabble rouser is, I've just heard the expression)

oakhurstleaf
Mar 21, 2006, 03:59 PM
I always thought it was a rebel rouser...someone who likes to arouse the rebels.

Maybe firewood prices go up like anything...gas prices seem to affect the cost of everything. And supply of course. Maybe supply has gone down...and then of course, prices will go up. Maybe it just depends on the type of wood...maybe one type is still quite plentiful and the other not so much as wood-burning season has been in full swing for a while.

I don't have a wood-burning stove...it's all propane central heating here. With an electric ignition...worthless during a power outage. Our fireplace is more for ambience than anything. Propane is crazy expensive!

monkey
Mar 21, 2006, 06:11 PM
Oh, REBEL rouser. That makes much more sense. Maybe we could hire a bunch of aroused rebels for Mystee's party. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

They do the same with just about any product. Ever try to buy flowers around Valentines/Mothers Day, etc.?
A Soda/Beer at a Ball Game? (Not to mention those cool glasses with the shaker tops I got with a friend at Pac Bell Park) http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif

The key is preparation, and stocking up for winter. (Just like I didn't)

My dad's favorite admonishment was that ant and grasshopper thing ... don't know how many times we all had to listen to it over and over whenever we were doing something he thought to be frivolous. It ended up becoming a family joke.

I can picture that, it makes me laugh inside.
You can add a little more to it: cutting wood for winter warms you twice. I'm sure you have heard many more like it.
