Ahh, I thought you were referring to the Dead People. As in the ones referred to in the above post, ya know, Dia De Los Muertos.

Guess we shouldn't have taken their land in the first place. Then we wouldn't be having this conversation. You can find this information in American History II.

But...
Mexican Americans are Legal Citizens & under the Constitution have the right to practice their religion, which I believe Dia De Los Muertos falls under the heading of...

I appreciate your apology,no hard feelings, but still disagree with your point of view. Some of those illegals have lived in deplorable conditions and I just can't condemn the individuals who come across the border in a desperate attempt to improve their lives. What I don't like is the ones that come over and don't try to learn the language or follow our laws. I know they can put a strain on social services with us paying for their health issues, supplying them with food from food banks, etc. But if I were in their situation with little or no education and no chance of improving my life in my own country, I think I would do whatever I could to improve the lives of my family, legal or not. Fortunately, we grew up in America with plenty of opportunities for most.
I hope your shoulder heals quickly. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

Honoring the dead lives on

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Carol Reiter
CREITER@MERCEDSUN-STAR.COM

HORNITOS -- With the ancient smell of myrrh competing with the foothill smell of sage, the Rev. Steve Bulfer reminded the crowd in the tiny cemetery that the living are always connected with the dead.

"We pray for our brothers and sisters, for those who lie here in rest," Bulfer said.

The Catholic priest, along with about 250 people holding candles, gathered Thursday night in this small Mariposa County town to celebrate All Souls Day. Started in France in the 11th century and embraced by Mexico in later years, Hornitos is one of the few towns that still celebrates the day, also known as Day of the Dead.

Hornitos was first established by Mexican miners in 1848, and quickly became a Gold Rush boom town. By 1870, more than 15,000 people were living in the hill town that got its name from the above-ground graves of miners that looked like little ovens, or "hornitos" in Spanish.

Now the population is down to less than 300, but every year, a big crowd gathers on Nov. 2 to remember the dead and make the walk up the hill to the church and graveyard.

This year, a crowd of about 250 people from all over the state came to take the steep hike up to St. Catherine's Catholic Church and place candles on the graves of the dead in the graveyard behind the church.

Bulfer said that the tradition of celebrating All Souls Day in Hornitos was started by Dona Candelaria, who lived from 1817 to 1903.

At Candelaria's grave, Bulfer blessed the crowd with burning myrrh and holy water.

"We still have memories of the dead," he said. "Those bonds never break."

The procession to the church and graveyard started in town at the plaza, where Julie Kleinsmith of Mariposa passed out candles.

Kleinsmith said that the tiny church of St. Catherine's was only open twice a year, for the Day of the Dead and for St. Catherine's feast day.

The church has no electricity, no lights, and no restrooms, and only a few ceremonies other than the two scheduled days are held in the church that has been overlooking the town since 1862.

Residents from Hornitos mingled with people from as far away as Southern California, walking along the hilly path from the town square up to the church. Luminarias marked the way under a cloudy sky.

After Bulfer blessed Candelaria's grave, people moved throughout the graveyard, placing candles on family graves. Mass was then said in the church.

One of the oldest residents of the area, Thelma Robinson, made it one more time to the tiny town where she was born.

With 29 relatives buried in the cemetery, 93-year-old Robinson said she plans on making the trip to Hornitos as long as she is able.

"It's our way of showing respect," she said.

Reporter Carol Reiter can be reached at 385-2486 or creiter@mercedsun-star.com.

I went to a local store yesterday and bought a 32 inch flat screen tv on sale. When I got home, I found they had given me a 37 inch tv with someone's name on it. It was worth about $700.00 more than I paid for mine. So, I drove back into town to return it. The guy that helped me said "Shoot, you should have just kept it" and I told him I was too honest to do that and the man who's name was on it would not have been happy when he came to pick it up. The employee just rolled his eyes. Never one did anyone apologize for the mistake or thank me for being honest. What is this world coming to when actions like mine are treated like I'm being a bother and an idiot?

Besides being a jerk for rolling his eyes (which makes me immediately want to poke them out when I see that done), he's the idiot....who did he think was going to get called when the one with your name on it was still in the store?
Maybe a local business owner to other local business owner-type call should be made.
And if you got it at the place I'm thinking, good luck ever getting it repaired if it needs it. Getting my washer repaired was a epic adventure complete with several crying jags on my part.

Monkey, I agree with you that integrity and honesty aren't as prevalent as they once were. People don't seem to understand honor and goodness. I have actually gotten eye-rolling, too, when I tried to call attention to something dishonest or unfair.

Far too many people think in selfish terms these days and it is very sad, indeed. And usually, they are the ones who squawk the loudest when somebody treats them unfairly!

I need a vacation - yearning for the ocean and seafood. Would like to go to some place on the Norcal Coast I have never been. Ideas? Oh, I've been to Santa Cruz, Morro Bay, Pismo, Monterrey, Carmel, S.F. Anyone ever been to Humboldt? Worth looking into?

We just came back from Cambria. It was gorgeous. The rates are lower at this time of year $79/night at the Fogcatcher on Moonstone Beach if you stay 2 nights (breakfast incl.)and you can see the elephant seals on the rocks. Try The Sea Chest restaurant.Originally posted by Summer:

When it comes to health Care this country is number 37. Heck Puerta Rico is above us. Pretty sad ah. It's also sad when attained terrorist get better health care then american citizens whom have health care. Nope terrorists don't get denied they get the best.

I hope this move p*sses alot of people off.

I know the funk is bad when I don't even want to listen to music. When I get like this I try and do something I don't like doing since I'm cranky anyway so I cleaned the house and b#&*!tched and moaned the whole time. I think I got it all out and I'm ready for a tear jerker movie tonight and a brand new day tomorrow. Today I have cooked one double-batch of Chinese Chicken Salad (the one with ramen noodles and cabbage), one double-batch of the same, only meatless, one taco salad, four batches of caramel corn, cooked and chopped several pounds of broccoli and bacon for stuffed potatoes, chopped six bunches of green onions, made three batches of salad dressings, cooked chicken breast and thighs, went grocery shopping, cleaned the cat's litter box and fed her, did two loads of laundry, wrote two articles, got my camera gear together, made business calls and caught up on a bunch of e-mail, did some tax work, took a shower, gathered up the trash, packed for a trip, and I am still not done. Now I get to write two food columns before I go to bed and it's almost 11 p.m.

Is that enough random nonsense? Wow......and I am only drinking root beer! Where's the good stuff?!!! :)

Lil Mom, sorry but you need to put your foot down, especially now with the price of groceries ! I know its not its not easy on anybody right now, but they need to find another source for their food supplements. Maybe recommend the manna house to them, but tell them your very sorry but you just CANT afford to loan your familys food~ ( or anything else they may want to use you to borrow...You said grocery store...so I ran with that....lol...) Learning to say "NO" can be tough at first but you will feel better and be farther ahead in the long run..

3 of my children were the same way and would run to the corner to do the deed or be standing in the kitchen with their face turning red and it was so aggravating. Maybe I'm awful but I let them run around the house naked or just in a tshirt. when they needed to go to the bathroom it wasn't nearly as comfortable. DEfinitely have a potty chair and or sit the kiddo backwards on the big potty. They are much more stable that way. wo wants to fall in a toilet.yuck. good luck and sorry to have butted in

It's amazing how much happiness comes from your toddler learning to use the potty!... my wife and I had a pooping party when my 4 year old son finally learned! It's only been a few months and we're still partying!

The downside is having to then use whatever bathroom you can find when you're out in public... ick!

It's kinda funny, I'm using the same tactics for my grandson I used when I taught a two year old class (I was constantly teaching at least 8-10 children to use the potty)... It's one of the things I don't miss about teaching preschool... ;)
I have a container of 'potty treats' and the only time he can have one is when he uses the toilet. Since Justin does not usually receive candy or treats very often, the gummy bears work really well. I did pick up some gummy strawberries in Santa Cruz and when I offered one to him his response was 'potty treat?'
As for my own kids, one was not yet two when she decided, one was about 2 1/2 and the other, well, he was really close to turning four and finally got it.
It's all about timing and paying attention to the cues, from what I've learned and like I said, I taught a whole bunch of them... if you train yourself, or push the child to hard, they will resist. Try to make it a game and offer a small reward, positive reinforcement doesn't really work in this area (and I am a positive reinforcement advocate in most other areas). Give them something tangible to reward the behavior. Don't tell them they're 'a baby', don't embarrass, sometimes they just aren't ready when their siblings were... Also, it's time consuming, but for the pooping part, usually there is a time pattern established, so near the time, sit them on the potty and read them a story, they may start to resist, but if the story is interesting they generally start to relax and nature takes over. Be sure to finish the story even if they go quickly. Give them a small treat, don't make too big of a deal of it, we don't get applause when we poop... Tell them thats what people do, and go on with your day. Usually a few days of this and they get it. (I've learned a lot since mine were little) ;)
Oh, and use the extra diaper $$ for a pedicure....

Hey YJ about a month before we went to Disneyland I told Kirsten that only big girls that are potty train get to go to Disneyland and I am not kidding in 1 weeks she pee pee and pooped in the potty and she only had a couple accidents. It was like over night. Disneyland was her reward and it worked great. oh and her and Cole loved Disneyland. I think it ment more to her going there knowing she did something good to go there and not just going there because she is a kid.
