Can you name Goodyear's new baby?
(Updated Monday, April 17, 2006, 5:10 AM)
Here's a contest that's really up in the air: The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is asking for suggestions to name its latest blimp, which made its debut last week.
Known only by its FAA designation, N2A, the new blimp will begin crisscrossing the United States right away. The ships travel more than 100,000 combined miles annually, displaying messages over sports events and other large gatherings.
Goodyear's blimps began floating across America in 1925. Traditionally, they were named after winners of the America's Cup yacht race.
The author of the winning entry will win the use of the blimp for an entire day in his or her hometown. Nine other winners will receive tires.
To enter, go to www.nametheblimp.com (http://www.nametheblimp.com) and fill out the form by April 30. A list of finalists will appear on the Web site May 7. Online voting will help decide the winner, which will be announced early in June. Some suggestions, just to get you started: Blimp Bizkit, Walk With a Blimp, George Blimpton or Blimp My Ryde.
Considering that the company's other two current airships are called The Spirit of America and The Spirit of Goodyear, that may not be much help. But we do think the theme song for all three should be "It's Hard Up Here for a Blimp."
