View Full Version : Alfonso's in Coarsegold

My experience at Alfonso's was less than perfect. We entered the front door and stood behind a couple of elderly ladies waiting to be seated. A woman, I believe to be the owner, came and seated them and then went about her business. We stood there for about five minutes while people bustled all around us without even acknowledging us. Finally, the owner seated us in the bar area. We ordered soda and tea and my husband's tea came with a fork instead of a spoon. We chuckled and watched the people and looked around the bar. We noticed a boy about the age of 8 or 9 with a matador mustache drawn on his face running around behind the bar! We assumed he was the owner's son and he pretty much had free reign of the place. When the waitress came to take our order in a reasonable amount of time, I asked if I could get meat on my tostada. She said yes, but then they would have to take off the sour cream. I had to order sour cream on the side. Then the waitress said that our food may take awhile as the place was busy but we could help our self to the salsa bar. Our chips were stale and from a bag and the Salsa was definitely not homemade and from a jar. I LOVE Mexican food and would eat it every day if I could. I was happy to see that Alfonso's boasted food that was made fresh, never out of a can, and a warmth of Mexico. Sadly to say, my beans were Rosarita and very dry. My tostada tasted okay, but once we got our food, our waitress wasn't seen again. It's a good thing my salsa or tostada wasn't spicy because I didn't have any more soda! When we asked the owner for drinks, she seemed like we were inconveniencing her, and when another customer asked for a box, she acted the same way. Then she gave the customer a tiny box and when the lady said it was too small, she said, "well that's all I have." the lady left her food behind because it wouldnt' fit in the box. The service was horrible, the food was less than what I could have made at home with tortillas and Rosarita. I won't ever go back there.

Sounds like I will be sticking with El Cid's and Castillo's. Thank you for the update, I was wondering how it was going to turn out.

I've never been because I've heard the same from other people. Now I KNOW I'll never go.
Thanks for the info.

Dang! I'm also one of those that would be happy to eat Mexican food daily, but will steer clear of this place. Sounds like they have alot of issues to work out. Too bad. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/sad3.gif

I too heard that this place has, um, quirks to (hopefully) work out. Haven't eaten there since they moved, but frankly, I wasn't all too impressed when I ate there before. It was average.

Mmmm El Cid.

Unfortunately, the food has not improved. Indigestionville. Probably will stick to El Cid's which is NOISY, or Castillos.

I love El Cids, but the authenticness of Lucy's could take me there every day.

Lucy's is very good, reminds me of my Dads cooking, but for a really incredible Mexican meal go to La Cabana in North Fork.

Lucys is good. TOO good!! El Cids is ok. (not as authentic) The Taqueria doesnt know the meaning of "spicy".
I used to go to Alfonsos all the time in their old shop. The first time i went to their new place (CJ's) it sucked.. got the fish taco and it was BLECH. went last week with Messy and SheilaMae and it was MUCH better. I think they just have to get used to having a bigger place. But they do need to keep an eye on the salsa bar.. as it was pretty much empty when we got their for lunch.

I understand that Lucy's sold a couple of weeks ago to a family member of hers. I ate there a couple of days ago and it was still wonderful.

I have to agree with you on all points YW. I really like Lucy's (great chicken taquitos - a meal in itself), but always thought Taqueria was bland. I am a total spice freak. Alfonsos had great tamales but anything else was not so good. El Cid is El Cid. Not terrific but I have learned to like it pretty much now. Love the salsa and chips and of course the margys on the rocks.

I drove by the Taqueria yesterday and saw a neon OPEN sign in the window, so I guess they have finished the move. Looking forward to reviews.

Drove by last night on my way to the Mountain House and the doors were open and their wood signs now have arrows pointing to their new location... inside were lots of people and what looks to be a buffet island...

Considering all the other sign rules are commonly ignored in Oakhurst http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/sad3.gif, I would guess the sign will be there awhile.

Someone told me a story of a bunch of kids in the park with the Raleys Drug Store sign (with the word Drug) flashing on & off. They thought it was amusing. Would that qualify as an animated sign? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/rofl5.gif

Now, where did I hear that & did I get the details correct?

We used to go to Alfonso's when they were in Oakhurst, but haven't since they moved to Coarsegold. I used to be a fan...wonder if I'd be now (several years later).

I, personally, think all the Mexican restaurants claim they have "authentic" Mexican cuisine while their competitor doesn't...but really none of them do. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif Not speaking for Lucy's though, as I've never been there.

I wonder how Pete's feels about the Taqueria's banner advertising Breakfast Burritos on the wall facing Pete's...when Pete's is known for the same thing. Bet they're not too happy.

I went by there yesterday morning and counted 10 outside signs, not counting the ones in the windows.

Lucy's is on 49, in the 'junction 90' center and La Cabana is in North Fork.
