FALCONS CELEBRATE MARDI GRAS WITH ZOOPERSTARS & JERSEY AUCTION

Auction After Friday’s Tilt with Condors Supports Hinds Hospice

FRESNO, Calif. – The ZOOperstars, which in seasons past have featured such characters as Mia Hamster, Peyton Manatee, Ichiroach Suzuki, and Roger Clamens, will entertain during the first and second intermissions this Friday, Feb. 24, when the Fresno Falcons host the Bakersfield Condors at 7 p.m.

The team will be wearing specialty jerseys celebrating Mardi Gras. The jerseys will then be auctioned off following the game with a portion of the proceeds to benefit Hinds Hospice. Also entertaining fans before the game will be the Stone River Band. The entire evening of festivities is presented by AT&T, Mega 97.9, and KSEE 24.

Hinds Hospice was founded in 1981 by Nancy Hinds, who began caring for terminally ill patients in her own home. Now, 25 years later, Hinds Hospice’s services have greatly expanded to include a perinatal hospice, formal physician education, and the only inpatient hospice facility in Fresno, Madera, and Merced counties. Hinds Hospice also provides outpatient services in Madera and Merced counties.

Individual tickets for the game against Bakersfield are on sale now at all Ticketmaster outlets and Save Mart Center’s box office with prices ranging from $8 - $23. Game called after Falcon breaks leg
By Ken Robison / The Fresno Bee

(Updated Saturday, February 25, 2006, 6:45 AM)

Do you think the NCAA should penalize the Fresno State men's basketball team above and beyond the self-imposed sanctions? Why or why not?

James R. Bray Sr. said: On these basketball sanctions I think when a player fouls up he should be punished, and I think that should...
[Join the talk!] It was a day that began with upbeat optimism, but Friday suddenly turned grim for the Fresno Falcons.

Just a few hours after the team's new ownership was announced in an afternoon press conference, Friday's game against Bakersfield was called off because of unsafe ice conditions at Save Mart Center — after Falcons defenseman Cory Murphy suffered a broken fibula and dislocated ankle when his skate caught between the ice and the boards.

About seven minutes into the game, Murphy was skating untouched in the corner when his skate lost its edge and he crashed into the boards, snapping his left ankle.

"Nobody tripped him, there was no contact" Falcons coach and general manager Matt Thomas said. "The conditions of ice weren't good, we believe that caused him to lose an edge."

Murphy's screams could be heard even in the upper concourse.

"It was as ugly as you can imagine, major pain," Thomas said. "You don't see a grown man in that much pain too often."

Play never resumed after Murphy's injury. The game will be made up at a date to be determined. There was no score.

The injury came when Murphy was at a high point of his career. He just returned to the Falcons after spending six games playing for Cleveland of the American Hockey League, one step up from the ECHL.

"I interviewed him before the game," said Falcons announcer Brian Clark. "He said he proved to himself he could play in the AHL and now he wanted to come back and win a championship. This is his home."

Murphy is lost for the season, but Thomas said the 30-year-old defenseman's health is a bigger issue.

"Anytime we lose our best defenseman, we're concerned," he said. "But this is a game, and Cory Murphy's life and health is what we're we most concerned about."

New Falcons owner Brian Glover, whose company Fresno Hockey Club LLC took over ownership of the team earlier in the day, visited Murphy in the hospital after the game and said the injury did not appear to be career-threatening.

"Cory will be in a cast for six weeks and get rehab after that," Glover said. "I was concerned because of the extent of the injury, but he will play next year, without a doubt."

Thomas said he complained about the condition of the ice Friday morning to Save Mart Center officials. He said during the morning skate-around the Falcons placed pylons over places where concrete was exposed.

"We have been concerned quite often this season about the condition of the ice at Save Mart Center," Thomas said. "[The Falcons] have nothing do with the condition of the ice. The biggest problem is the ice isn't thick enough or maintained enough. I almost want to say it's brittle.

"It's not strong enough because it gets covered up a lot."

The Falcons share the Save Mart center with Fresno State basketball teams, concerts, monster truck pulls and bull riding events.

But Glover wasn't buying any excuses.

"There's no excuse for negligence," he said. "They have to pay attention to [the ice].

"As part of our lease, the playing conditions are supposed to be safe and acceptable for hockey. It's [Save Mart Center's] responsibility.

"Someone got injured tonight, and that is not acceptable. We're supposed to be provided with a safe working place and that didn't happen today."

Glover said he expected Tuesday's game against Las Vegas would go on as scheduled. But Thomas wasn't as sure.

"We had enough concern tonight that we decided the game could not be played," Thomas said. "Before we play another game we have to make sure we address those concerns."
