Auto Cool

I just watched the Consumer Alert on Channel 30 and they showed the testing they did on this device. You hang it on your car window and it's solar powered and supposed to cool your car down, so they say. It's about 17 dollars. Anyway, they showed it on a car in Fresno, it didn't work, the car got up to 120 degrees, even though the fan was spinning. Also, they expressed concern that the weather stripping that you put at the top of your window when you put the device on, could make your car more vulnerable to car thieves forcing the windows open. Just figured I'd share this with ya'll.

On something like this, I usually wait until Channel 30 does a Consumer Alert test on it to see if it really works. I figured as bad as the heat has been, some people might be getting desperate for something to cool their cars off, so figured I'd post the warning. Everytime I saw that commerical I would tell my husband what a bunch of crap.. it is essentially blowing hot air around, it isn't like there is freon in it or something.

OMG I can't stand that commercial. My theory is they are trying to GIVE you a headache so you will need their product!

Way back when (before I was old enough to remember) my Grandfather had a 'swamp cooler' which he attached to the window of the car. We still joke about it now and then at Thanksgiving get togethers.

This picture is similar to what everyone describes his as looking like. Note, though, that I think the car needs to be running for it to work, because the flow of air at driving speed is what caused it to circulate.

I tried one of those years ago. It does pull air from your open vent and exhausts it through the device, but it doesn't move enough air, even in low heat conditions.
If you don't have a vent, or another window open a little, it can't do anything.

The only thing I have ever bought off there is the Grabber, you know, the extension grabber thingy for short people. Use it all the time and it works great! I do get some strange looks when I pull it out at the grocery store, but hey! whatever it takes to reach those top shelves when you're in the granny carts, LOL!
