Of course it has to be the "talking bear"! EVERYONE in town knows who this is. If you're new you had better find out fast cuz most directions given by locals is in proximity of the "talking bear" on Road 426, in front of Century 21 Ditton on the corner.

It isn't plastic. If my memory serves me, its fiberglass. Oh, and it doesn't talk, it plays a recording when you push a button.

"Growl!" "Growl!" "I'm a California grizzley bear!"...I forget the rest. Something about how many there used to be until Wal Mart moved in or something...

Y'all are correct. The bear does not talk amymore. The bear now communicates telepathically. I have had many conversations with him during the late night hours. Or was that the whiskey talkin to me? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/freak.gif

I had a therapist meet with the bear, The bear apparently had some issues. Something to do with a kidnapping of a fellow bear last year. He has worked out his issues and yes he is talking again. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

The Bear was placed there by Ditton's and used to "talk" via a recorded message about grizzleys and Oakhurst/Yosemite area. It was a tape that was kept inside the Realty building. It used to malfunction alot and also the bear was vandalized many times over the years. Brad kept it running for many years in spite of this. If I can find the fact sheet I will try to post it..we used to hand them out when I worked there. I bet someone at Ditton would be able to find an old fact sheet somewhere. The bear has been at that corner since the 60's I believe when the little building (which is now at the corner of rd 415 and 41 in Coarsegold) was the Realty office. When they built the new building he was given his permanent home as you see him now. If anyone ever sees Brad Ditton I'm sure he could tell you all the stories about the bear (if he had time) hehehe.
