I was called this evening by a neighbor alerting me that a pack of wild pigs has moved into our neigborhood. He says they have been reaking havoc on properties and challenging pets. He said that they can be agressive towards people. What are the laws/rights towards wild pigs that come on your property and reak havoc on your yard or your pets? can you shoot them if they are a threat to you or your pets?

I found this link after I typed the above message http://www.dfg.ca.gov/hunting/pig/regs.htm

Warning If harassed or wounded, can cause serious injury with tusks. Flesh often full of parasitic worms.

It looks like you need a license to shoot them.

We saw one a couple days ago splayed out in the back of a pickup. Don't know the laws, but a call to fish & game might be a good idea.

wild pigs are fair game in Ca. as long as you have a valid hunting license.,., there is no season for wild pig.,.,., shoot em.,., clean em and take them to the butcher.,.,., wild pigs are great eating.,.,.,., if you do decide to try to kill them be sure to use a big rifle.,., or a shotgun with a slug., especially if its a bigger pig.,., they can be very tough

Newcomer, what area are these pigs in? What kind of pets are they challenging? Over by RD 415 & Trabuco and Rd 415 & Jennifer there are big patches of ground torn up by pigs. They just moved in here in the past 2 or 3 weeks. They have been pretty thick in the area around RD 415 and the river near RD 400 too. I saw evidence of pigs in YLP about a month ago. It appears that they are spreading up RD 415 from the river and are up to the rodeo grounds now. Call Fish & Game & they will tell you what to do. These pigs are nasty, ugly things & they multiply quickly.

That's exactly where they are reported by our neighbors on 415 (they have the 80 acres in front of Bohna Rodeo Grounds).

OMG, it's the "invasion of the pigs"! Is this common up here? My sister in W. Va. has told me about them but I never dreamed we had them up here. Also, what kinds of signs do the leave? Tracks, holes, what?

The most obvious sign that wild pigs are around would be the rooted up dirt. They push the dirt around with their snouts. The furrows are about 4" + deep & the ground will look like someone has rototilled it. A lot of times the rooted area will be under the branches of oak trees. You can see examples of this on the corner of Trabuco & 415.

Their tracks look very much like deer tracks but fatter & a little smaller.

Then, of course, there is pig poo. Here is a link to photos of pig signs:

TOKYO (AFP) - Four Japanese nationals needed no reminding that the year of the pig had arrived when they were attacked by wild boars in a rural city on New Year's Day.

The four, aged between 56 and 77, sustained slight leg or head injuries when three wild boars went on the rampage in a residential area in Yawatahama on the island of Shikoku on Monday afternoon, police said Tuesday.

"Some 15 local hunters tried to track down the boars after they went back into the mountains," a duty officer at the police station in Yawatahama, a seaside city of 41,000 people, said by telephone.

"They abandoned the hunt after a couple of hours and we alerted the citizens to be aware of boars by the public address system," he said.

The year of the pig, or more formally the boar, comes after the year of the dog in the 12-animal cycle in East Asian astrology.

According to the lunar calendar, the year of the pig will begin on February 18. But Japan officially follows the solar calendar and its first day of the year of the pig was January 1.

this is true.,., wild pigs for the most part.,., are extremely spooky by nature.,. youd probably be hard pressed to actually SEE them if your outside and makeing any kind of noise., talking.,heavy foot steps throught the bushes., they can smell and hear quite well but their vision is not so hot.,.,., they can be quite dangerous if they are cornered or wounded so if you see one.,., and your not intent on killing it to eat and mount its head on your wall,.,., I say., keep your distance.,., 99% of the time faced with a human confrontation.,., theyre gonna run away from you.,., but some of the big boars can have lower tusks that they use for rooting up to 6-7 inches long., and if they want to., and they can get ahold of you.,., your gonna get fairly cut up.,., so basically.,., not outwardly dangerous.,., but why push it., they are wild animals after all

Pigs can be very damaging to a persons property. I have seen a beautiful lawn be destoryed and it looks like someone when in and shoveled there front lawn in.. damage that could lead into alot of money to fix. with the money of what already put in. plants gone... rooted up .... it is a heart breakingn deal when you put your heart and soul and money into a beautiful place and they destroy it.

Okay I am posting for my husband he wants to put a few words in to share a few insites for everyone.....

first of all: he has been hunting and guideing wild boar hunts for over 30+ years, here is his imput.

They can be aggresive at times but hardly ever with humans, they can be distructive 100% of the time. It takes a hunting lic. and pig tags to hunt them but you cannot fire a rifle in area like trubbuco and wells road, and it is illegal to hunt them at night. The pigs you are seeing at Road 400 at the river are not the same pigs you are seeing at trubbuco and road 415, if you are seeing 10 pigs guarantee there are a 1,000 more within four square miles. You can shoot at them myabe kill one or two but they will be back and more. They can breed up to three times a year with up to 14 piglets in a brood and sow can breed at the earliest age of 6 months. The most effective way to get rid of them is to track them but that takes a state trapper and fish and game will not send a state trapper unless the problem is really bad. Also it is illegal for you to take any kind of money without a guide lic. you can charge a traspass fee but then you are asking for trouble. everybody clams that they can get rid of your problem but unless it is handled professionally your problem will return. With a gun you maybe get one and then they are gone, my way is archery equipment get one or two at a time daily
until your problem is gone. you can put flyers up but then would you call a plumber to take care of electrical problem? Just our two cents.

The pigs are not on my property but I do know where they are and will keep an eye out for them if they move towards my property. I heard today that they come through every year about this time and the people who have them on their property have learned to deal with it. We have never had a problem with them. We will see. Maybe your hubby can get a TV show called 'The Wild pig Hunter" Crikes mate.... http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

Believe it or not.. My daughter and son inlaw in San Jose are having the same problem!! Yes, wild pigs in San Jose http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif Anyway my son inlaw has rigged up a motion activated sprinker jet that sprays the garden with water when activated by the buggers. Leave it to those silicon valley types to build a better mouse, I mean pig trap. This one even got him featured on the local San Jose tv news.

Cheers, Bob

Hi Michelle,

They live in South San Jose. They are in a housing development that backs onto wide open space. It's all open space between them and Mt. Diablo 50 miles to the east. Lots of space for wild pigs to roam and reproduce. I just thought it was funny.. Wild pigs in San Jose!! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/shocked.gif

Cheers, Bob

I've talked to cowboys who claim they saw a pig disembowel a horse. Timid normally with great sense of smell, they are primarily nocturnal in feeding habits, but can be out in the day, hardy, requiring a med to heavy rifle or a good shot with the bow. Meat is suppossed to be very good as far as wild table fare goes, good luck finding themhttp://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif
They can be hunted year round, used to be cheap for a tag, now DFG has jumped on the money wagon and inflated the tag to $16.80 a tag-huge rippoff for Californian hunters
