Just looked at the photos in the Gallery of Shuteye and Chilkoot Lake. What a beautiful place! I have to go there. Can someone give directions and/or surrounding areas that are a must see? Also, what is the elevation?

You just saw those? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif
Heh, well I forget the path to Shuteye, but Chilkoot Lake I know by heart, camped there many a time.
From the Pines resort take Beasore Road ~15 miles till you reach Cold Springs Summit (where the year round restroom is in that little parking lot). If you start heading downhill towards Beasore Meadows then you've gone too far.
At this cross roads you can go left on a dirt road toward Sugar Pine, or go right on a gravel/dirt road that goes behind the bathroom towards the East, or you can go straight on the paved road toward Beasore Meadows.
You want to take the right turn, and you will go about a mile and to the right will be a road marked with a Jeep symbol. Take this road or otherwise you'll end up going another 5-6 miles toward a dead end that overlooks Beasore Meadows (which is actually a very cool place to hang out in the day time or camp at too).
After turning right on the 4x4 road, you'll go about a quarter mile until you reach the point where YOU WILL need 4x4. You can park here and hike the remaining part of the road to Chilkoot Lake and the campgrounds, or brave the road in 4x4.
Many times the road is blocked by fallen Red Fir or Lodgepole Pines though, and the snowmelt often drains down that road and really messes it up.
You wouldn't expect to find a lake there up in the granite peaks, but it's there... http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif
I've camped there in Snow, Wet, and Dry seasons. When the lake is at it's fullest, and the weather warm at night, there are millions of frogs singing in unison. It is an excellent place to wath the Perseid meteor showers, and stargazing in general.
Fair warnings, be cautious, there are Bears and Mountain Lions up there. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif Also Lightning can be very dangerous up there during storms.
The lake is roughly 8,000-8,500 ft level give or take a few hundred feet. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif
I've never seen fish in that lake, so I don't think it gets stocked.
I've hiked to the top of many of the surrounding peaks. One thing is take make sure you give youself enouigh time to get back to camp or down the mountain.

I went to Shuteye a few times last summer and a few times the summer before. I'll go again this year, for sure. Hey DG, maybe we'll bring Davy and his quad up there again?

Re:Chilkoot Lake.
It's a reservoir, and nearly drained by Summers end. I'm sure it's frozen solid down to the bottom, so no fish likely survive, but I don't know if it is ever stocked. Trout plants are published in the Star.
If I remember right, you need a "high clearance" 4x4 on that Jeep trail. It's not just a dirt road... LOL http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif
I've done it on a motorcycle and a lifted 4x4 pickup.

I made it many times in my Jeep CJ-5. RaiderFan did it fine in his CJ-7.
Definately not a Geo Metro road!
Hah hah!

Well, I ain't got no 4 X 4 and by the looks of it you need one to explore that area. Maybe I could find someone who has one and talk them into a little trip.........LOL

Would an ATV (Or Rhino) make it? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/smoking.gif

Yup, last year we dropped Davy off on his ATV & he took it all the way up. We were in the jeep. We parked the trailer for the ATV near the bottom of the cut off road. I think my subaru would make it if it were a little higher, unless I wanted to scrape up the bottom a bit. We're working on the registration for the Blazer so I can take that this summer.

It's also not that bad of a hike from the parking either. Rather pleasant nature walk really.
