Hi, I check mine twice a year and blow them out with a air duster frequently. I also replaced 2 last year that triggered false alarms and continued even after cleaning. The previous owners had placed a smoke detector in the attic near the furnace which was a code violation, I am replacing it with a heat detector now. Smoke detectors malfunction at above 105 degrees and that was happening with the attic one they put in since the attic can reach 150 in summer. The heat detector is set at 195 and is a rate of rise detector also. Now its will be done the right way.

I do not want to lose a life, my house and all its contents to a simple thing like not having a working system that is simple to maintain.
