New area stoplight planned

Traffic is backing up at Highway 41 and Road 415 in Coarsegold and has become a serious safety issue, according to Madera County Planning Director Ray Beach.
The intersection at Highway 41 and Road 415 in Coarsegold has become a huge safety issue. Cars are backing up on Road 415 and unsafely crossing traffic onto Highway 41. A stoplight in that area is planned for spring.
A new stoplight is scheduled to be put in at the intersection this spring, to help reduce the potential for traffic accidents, Beach said.
"This is only going to partially solve the problem," he said. "In order to fix it, eventually there will need to be a widening of Highway 41, a widening of Road 415 and the bridge across Coarsegold creek — all of which are not going to happen right now."
Beach said with the heavy increase in traffic comes a service deficiency. "Cars are having to wait a while to turn onto 41 from 415, which leads to cars taking too much risk," he said. "The stoplight will allow cars to learn to go in moderation and it will reduce the potential for traffic accidents."
The stoplight will be funded by the county in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation.
Beach said the county has been requesting a light at the intersection for years, but has struggled with funding.
"This is going to make it more convenient for everyone and safer for everyone," Beach said.
