View Full Version : Interesting, Unusual Loads Seen on the road...

Years ago as a newlywed we moved from Ohio to North Carolina in a rust primered '49 Chevy Pickup, looking for all the world like the Beverly Hillbillies with everything but Granny in 'er rocker (I made SURE I had a rocking chair when moving AWAY from NC!). Self conscious about our 'unusual' appearance on the highway then, I've since always noticed overfilled automobiles and unusual loads in open truck beds. Here, I'm always especially amused at vacationers with SOOOOOOOO MUCH gear they barely have room for passengers.

Yesterday and the day before at around 5pm both days, I saw pickup trucks with the most interesting furnishings headed up 41 just north of 417. The truck I saw Saturday was carrying a very ornate dresser/vanity with a beautifully curved mirror...looked antique, but may have been a repro. Then Sunday another truck (or could it have been the same one????) was carrying pink and cream victorian chairs. Definitely NOT the usual style of furnishings for these parts. I couldn't help but be curious about the home(s) they were headed for and have been wondering since if I'll happen to get a chance to see the interior so decorated.

What's the most interesting thing you've seen being transported through the area?

LOL, I "look at loads" too as we go down the road. I always check out the furniture because I love looking at old antiques, and you're right, some of the vacationers pack so much stuff they can't possibly be comfortable in their vehicles (and will probably never use half of what they bring). I find myself imagining what the people are like based on what load they are carrying. The load that made me the most nervous one time was a load of bee hives (complete with bees). I sure didn't like stopping behind them at lights. For some reason I love looking at the logging trucks, guess it's because really you don't see many anymore, and there used to be so many. The most interesting load I have ever seen was a carousel being moved from somewhere in the valley. We passed it going over to the coast. I LOVE carousels, just couldn't figure out how to reach out and grab it and get it in my Focus, LOL!

BGW that looks like your ole truck. lol j/k...to funny
I look at loads also. Sometimes I can't beleave how they get all that stuff in there. Sometimes, I keep my distance cause looks like they might lose their load. The funniest I've ever seen was a pickup loaded with bikes and 2 sheep. Hmmmmmm

As far as camping, we're loaded down. Would love to bring our dog but no room for him being he's a 100 lb lab. With 3 kids and all our stuff cant fit him in.

As far as vacation airplane travel I try to stuff a suitcase full for check in and my carry on is packed too. I hate lugging suitcases thru airports. This year we're meeting the Bigman in Puerta Vallarta. Each kid will have a suit case and a carry on. Well be interesting.

By far the most interesting loads I've seen were in Thailand. And of those, the most interesting were the motorcycles and scooters. It was not unusual to see three adults and a child on one moped, or three adults with one holding a tool bag and another holding a 6 foot aluminum ladder!
