Who was the first black quarterback to start in the NFL and what year?

==> I believe the first black quarterback to start in the NFL was Doug Williams
of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Until that time, Black players routinely played
every other position but for racist reasns, weren't given starting jobs at QB.
John McKay (head coach of the Buccaneers) changed that.
I believe the year was 1978.
I may be wrong about this -- WIlliams was certianlyt he first SUCCESSSFUL
black QB but he may not have been the first.

James Harris, the first Black quarterback to start a NFL season, played from 1968 until 1981. On HBO's program "Inside the NFL," Harris pointed out that NFL scouts wanted to switch him from quarterback to another position once he graduated from college. Harris refused to bow to this form of racial profiling and went on to have a successful career as the leader of a number of NFL teams.

I saw that "Inside the NFL" show, too. My hat's off to Harris. It takes couragious people like him to stand their ground and change the world, even if it's just little by little.
