Oh my God,
I can't believe that the Met Cinemas has Brokeback Mountain playing 3 times a day http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/shocked.gif
Oh Rusty, what is the church community going to do when they see this movie ,about, Gay, Sheep hearding, cowboy hat wearing, rump rangers??? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/freak.gif
Funny during the SuperBowl they had a commercial that had the Clydesdales playing football, when a shaved sheep came onto the field, ran around ,stood up and flashed. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/anxious.gif
The cowboys on the fence said,"I hate streakers" http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/annoyed.gif
I wonder if this had anything to do with the Brokeback Cowboy, I mean Brokeback sheep hearder movie http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif
I want to see the movie, but I'm Homo-phobic http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/mask.gif, so I guess I'll have to find a woman to go with me http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif
I hope this won't ruin my next camping experiance http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/sick.gif, when I put up my tent http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/embarassed.gif, Hope I don't have nightmares http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/zzz.gif. Guess I'll have to sleep on my back too http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/idea3.gif.
Any girls want to go to the movies with me http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/rolleyes2.gif?

And it got an academy nomination. I'm trying to figure out what makes this film so wonderful. Maybe the scenery? Guess I'll have to see it out of curiosity.

Wow, I'm a bit surprised at this thread.
A bunch of us went to see the movie (at the Met) Saturday night. The movie was very well done and not at all gratuitous.
It is a love story and the two main characters who happen to be gay.
Jake Gyllenhaal, and most especially Heath Ledger, gave incredible performances. It was the performances these two actors gave that made the film brilliant.
Have an open mind; don't condemn something you've only heard about and not watched first hand.

Wow. I very rarely watch movies, so i don't usually check what's playing at the Met and just assumed they wouldn't play this one.
I'm glad they are and will try to go see it this week.

Does seem to be a departure from Rusty's typical selections.
Not that I care in this case, not really interested in that movie anyway.
Will he play Saw III though? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

On the recording to the Met, Rusty mentioned that he has Brokeback Mountain and Capote because both films are nominated for so many awards and he wanted to get all the Oscar nominated films at the Met.

Average Joe, Scary animals... http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/shocked.gif
Goddesschyyld, I'm open, just making light puns and I'll see it http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/anxious.gif but only because Rusty had the courage, and disclaimer, that explains why it's ok to see.
Rusty covered himself by the mention of oscar, so the church lady would not get him http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/shout.gif.
MtnEagle, good to see you in the forums, hope all is well with you and your family, stay warm..

Keith, where were you?
Keith
Feb 08, 2006, 06:51 PM
I was there!
I sat on the right side middle isle seat.
I walked in with my motorcycle helmet at 1:35pm
Just when the boys where at the bar talking.
I went with an open mind and was really bored to death http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/zzz.gif. This movie was totaly predict(DICKED)able. it could have been a short story.
Liked Quaids line about "stemming the Rose" http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif
And then later in the movie when the two Boys where sharing a bottle of "OLD ROSE" whiskey, made me smile, wondering if the two where linked or I was giving the director more credit then he deserved.
Yeah, the country side was beautiful, but hardly any horsemanship, rodeo riding, bar fighting. All there was ,is a slow moving , boring drama, with very little to carry me to any kind of emotional high or low at all.
Glad I used my red free movie pass and didn't spend the five bucks cash.
I can't see this going against Capote in the Oscars and getting any awards at all.
In my own opinion the movie gets a "C-"..sorry but that's my take on it.
I have a gay aunt that lives in colorado with her life partner and the two of them saw it and hated it.
So much for the arts http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

HAHAHA! This town makes me laugh sometimes. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif Once in a while I feel like I'm living in a black and white movie right out of the 1920's! It's so entertaining!

Somergirl, I'm with you 100%. Coming here from LA has been eye opening in many ways. I never thought I'd be able to live in a town that is so prejudiced towards anything or anyone who is "different" then their perceived norm. Sometimes I feel like heading down to Fresno just to get a little diversity.

So if Brokeback Mountain wasn't nominated for an Oscar, the met wouldn't play it because the two cowboys are gay!
You have got to be kidding me.
Lets go back to the Oakroom thread. See I told you adults act the same way as the peon kids there.

I love Oakhurst it's such a pretty place great weather but can't stand it's abundance of prejudice and intolerance. The fact that Rusty has to justify playing this movie is the perfect example.

Rusty has many times in the past not shown big movies that he thought the churchs would not like.

unfortunately the kids there are just as rude. The kids there (most.. there are some exceptions) are rude to adults and disrespectful). It is enlightening to find youth that is caring of older ppl, different ppl etc. Its the parents that need to teach their kids how to respect adults (pls read "Messys guide to child rearing aka How to Raise your kids into functon al adults")

The reason I don't care to see this movie has nothing to do with gay characters, it's entirely becuase it's a cowboy movie, and I'm just not that big on Cowboy movies.
Keith

It's not a Cowboy movie!!!
It's a story about sheephearders who ride horses and wear cowboy hats. One rode bulls in Rodeo, but they were not cowboys.
Funny, this is still playing and Capote is gone?

Not that it is any consolation but this movie also arrived late to Merced and not to a nationally known chain theater. Merced area residents were driving to Turlock and Modesto to see the film prior to its late arrival.

I saw Brokeback and I thought that it was so much more than the "gay cowboy movie" that people are making it out to be. Best film of the year? Far from it. I thought that History of Violence, Munich, and Capote were better. What I'm wondering is if Rusty is going to be getting V for Vendetta and how people in this town are going to react to it.

the only reason the movie got a nomination at all was the controversy ....the movie is a good replacement for Sominex

Mark, exactly!! Hollywood always goes for shock value first and foremost. They know controversey will sell at the box office. I haven't seen Capote yet but he was definitely gay but where is all the controversy about that film? There is nothing wrong with gay characters in a movie. It's only when they try to make a political or religious statement where it gets aggravating! Content of the story and acting is everything in a movie (jmo).

One of my Favortie movies is a remake of a French movie ... The Bird Cage with Robin Williams ... there is no mistaking the characters were gay .... some how it didnt make a wave .... I think because of the New View of Cowboys being the AMerican All American ... this made this more an exciting movie .... I dunno ... much a do about nothing from my views .... however, on a twisted note .... if this were two women as friends/lovers ... would we be having this type of discussion ?

Oh of course not! It's a man's world and that kind of stuff is ok. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/tongue.gif You're right, I think its the "manly" cowboy thing that just doesn't sit right. But remember that Rock Hudson, Montgomery Cliff and Jimmy Stewart "the ultimate manly men" were gay but no one knew it till too recently. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif As for the Bird Cage - it is one of my all time favorites - great acting and extremely funny! Where was the controversy there?

I think what people are so shocked about is that Brokeback is the first mainstream america film to deal with gay issues and not play it for camp value. Most all gay films so far to deal with gay issues on a non-camp level have been indie films that most of mid america never bother to see. It's also deals with something that is so america myth, which is the life of a cowboy. It's also a shock for two big name actors to be in the main roles. As for the noms, I think that it's a well put together film with some great acting in it. Who would have thought that Heath Ledger would have been able to pull off a film like this after seeing him in some of the other films he has done like Knights Tale and Ten Things I Hate about you. But I wish that come Oscar night that somehow Munich would win it for best picture because out of the 5 that are nomed its the best film out of the lot. I think the only film that stands a chance to take anything away from Brokeback is Crash, which I think was the most overrated film of the year.

I was going to wait for the DVD. I've never been to the theater in Oakhurst. I'm glad they had this movie, although I'm suprised they weren't picketed by the weirdo "churchy" people in this town. I was listening to Howard Stern the other day and he saw the movie and loved it. It's a story that has been told through out the ages, as in Romeo and Juliet. A tragic love story. By the way, can't wait to go the Oak Room again. No guy's ever hit on me there. What am I doing wrong?
