Washington Post Article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/21/AR2005062100430_pf.html)
The researchers plan to test about a half-million chemical compounds to find a pill that does not involve hormones that men could take weekly or monthly. They also hope to find something that is close to 100 percent effective and has no risky side effects.
The research is being conducted with a $7.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. Scientists will test compounds at a high-tech laboratory on the university's Lawrence campus.
It will be at least five years before clinical trials could be conducted on men.
While women have been using the pill since the 1960s, men generally have had two contraception choices: condoms or sterilization.
"Half of the population has been ignored," said Joseph Tash, a reproductive biologist at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
Only 27 percent of women who practice contraception rely on their partners to use condoms or have vasectomies, according to data from the Alan Guttmacher Institute.
"I think some couples would like to have that option," said Gunda Georg, lead researcher on the project. "There's been a shift in attitude. Some men would like to share more in that responsibility."

The operative word there is "hope". No thanks, I'll just stick to the good ol' vasectomy.

Just one more Question;

I've been trying to convince my husband for about 2 years now that he should be willing to take it, I'm sick of all the responsiblity...but he refuses either, maybe by the time it comes out, he'll agree to it....I think that if they can find a safe way, great, let the guys know what it's like to always have to remember some stupid pill at the same time, all the time, daily...and the birth control for women isn't without it's side effects either....can you tell I can't wait!? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

I think I would much rather trust myself to take the pill, especially when I stand my ground on not getting pregnant.
Yesterday I had a Dr. appt and went on a new pill. It's the one where you only have a period once every 3 months. I asked alot of questions about it and thankfully my Dr. is on the same pill. She said the new birthcontrol pills no longer have the side effects as the old ones. No more wieght gain or mood changes.

I will not worry about the weight gain. I already have the extra weight.

There's a new male contraceptive pill, and you don't have to take it orally.
http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gifYou put it in your shoe and it makes you limp.

Even if the newer pill doesn't make women moody or gain weight....how long has it been tested for? what ARE it's side effects, and I'm sick of having to take a damn pill like clock work daily! Only having to bleed once every three months SOUNDS great, but it can't be right...your body needs to flush everyonce in a while....what happens to that uterine lining? Sorry guys, I know you didn't want to read that, but really...we women are totally jumping all over each new form of contreceptive, I'm worried what we're going to hear about these in twenty years..."Have you taken _______ (fill in the blank), if so, you may be intitled to _________"....I don't want my husband to take the male contreceptive until it has thouroughly tested and we have seen some documentation on it, why would I want to jump the gun with my own body? I say "snip, snip, dam it!". I would get tied, but neither California (old home) or Arkansas (new home) will let any female get her tubes tied until she is A) atleast 25 or B) has three children or more...I say this is bull! I know that I don't want more children, I can't afford more, I am very fulfilled with my one, and I don't want to over populate the planet even more! Why should a girl have to have more children that she can't afford, go on financial aid, and over populate just to get her freakin' tubes tied! WHY? I ASK WHY! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

Well I know that Keith probably wouldn't want to take it. It scares me too KJ, that women take pills to stop their cycles for months at a time. And we wonder why we get cancer? Not saying that birth control pills are to blame, hell they could prevent cancer for all I know. It is just that people are so for convienence, and what is good RIGHT NOW, to hell with tomorrow.
That said, I have to agree that waiting until you are 25 is a good thing when it comes to getting ones tubes tied. 5 years ago I knew I didn't want any more children. But come to find out that I did. And I want one or two more too (NOT ANY TIME SOON!!!). What can I say? I want to over populate this world some more.
If you don't want more children then just adjust your lifestyle to accomodate that wish. Be responsible for your body. Cutting your tubes, IMHO is much more drastic then taking a pill that stops your period for three months.

The pill has been tested. It was a man who created the first "pill" to say "ok women should be on a 28 day cycle". When you reach my age it doesnt matter. I've always been regular. Once I hit 40, I don't know what I'm going to get each month. My Dr. is also in her 40s. For women our age it works.
Your age gals, you should talk to your Dr. about it.
I take very good care of my body. Inside and out. Being in the medical profession, you can be dam sure I'm going to talk thourghly to my Dr. and I feel very comfortable with the decision I have made.
