BUTTERFLIES GONE WILD: On May 4 and 5, the town of Mariposa will host the 2007 Butterfly Festival. The highlight will be the butterfly releases throughout the weekend to help re-establish the population. The butterflies released will be the native Painted Lady variety, which look like smaller monarch butterflies. The releases will take place at the Mariposa Creek Parkway sign at the bottom of Fifth Street. The first will be at 6 p.m. May 4. That night there also will be a costume contest and entertainment by Cousin Jack's Kids and a short presentation on the meaning of Mariposa. During the day, local artists will decorate the sidewalks in the Arts Park with chalk. Belgian waffles and strawberries will be served at the American Legion, the Art and Artisan Show will be in the Arts Park, the Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the Flamin' Butterfly Chili Cook-Off at Chocolate Soup, a quilt show will be at the History Center, and a parade is scheduled downtown. There also will be a butterfly garden demonstration, street entertainers, American Indian dancers performing, the Widders and Floozies walking the streets, a Miss Chili Pepper Contest sponsored by the ShadowCasters, raffles, a special event area for kids, and a food court on Seventh Street. For information, call 742-5522 or send e-mail to butterflyfestival@sti.net.
