Sandino's Velvet Rose is great. It's a welcomed addition to Oakhurst.
The Sierra Star had a great preview review last week.

The prices are very resonable for good Italian food and the food is great.
The owners are brand new to the restaurant business. They have nothing to do with the last place that occupied the building.

Here is my review of the Velvet Rose.
I called the number 411 Information gave me because I wanted to call and get reservations for this past Friday night. I called at 5:30 PM and got an answering machine that said you have reached the Velvet Rose please leave a number and we will call you back -- did not receive a call back. I guess there is no way to make a reservation by phone yet, Maybe I called too early?
The greeting when we got there was nice and accomodating and we only had to wait 5 minutes for a table at 6:45 PM.
THe waiter that came to the table (Roger) was very well mannered, humerous and presented himself with class. He was very good taking the orders and even made a substitution for one of the items I ordered even though it was not on the menu.
I ordered the Chicken Picatta and so did Kahlua Kid. They brought out fresh bread that was good, then the salad that was a mix of fresh baby greens & spinach with a house vinagarette that comes standard on the salad. The salad was a good size, not too big & not too small and was very fresh. The dressing was also very good.
The meal came out in a normal amount of time just as we finished our salads and our waiter Roger took great care on the placement of the meal in front of you as he placed the plate he the turned the plate to align the main dish with you. He was good on checking back on drinks & refills. The place got packed by the time that we completed dinner and we had a small wait for our check but not bad. THe prices were in-line with good Italian restaurants for the size portions although if you went withthe Veal Piccatta it was $19.95 vs. $12.95 for the Chicken Picatta. I felt that the veal price was a bit high but considering beef prices lately I guess it was about right. Overall on a scale of 1-10 I would give it a 8.5 out of 10.
At the end of the meal they brought all 3 of us complimentary cordials of Annisette (spelling?). A nice touch.. although we didn't finish them.
If they keep the good service up I think this place will make it, Not sure about through the winter with the tourist slow down but that's where the service comes in to play to bring back in the local's after the tourist season is over.

Well, I finally was able to go to the Velvet Rose the other night and was not too impressed. I had the chicken catchatori and it was pretty good. I hated the decor, all those roses were overbearing. I also didn't like the service. Everytime the busboy came to fill up our water, he asked us if we wanted more water. My opinion is that he just should have filled the dang glasses and not interrupted our conversation each time. The server did a good job though. I don't think I'll be back anytime soon, but if I get a cravin for Italian, I guess I'll go there as there is no where else in town http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/sad2.gif I was also suprised that they had veal and chicken, but no veal or chicken parmesean. It didn't make much sense to me that they don't have it on the menu as they have all the ingredients. I thought their menu was limited.

Tried it. The service was great. The food was ok - just average. I've had better. It was a little bland. The paintings everywhere were there when it was Viewpoint. I'm surprised they are still there. Maybe that was a requirement in the lease - they get a discount if they display all those paintings for the landlord('s mother? daughter? self? friend?) But hey, they're trying. Its hard to get a restaurant off the ground let alone make a go of it. Restaurants are the #1 business to fail - average is 60% failure rate in first year.

It was the worst food for the highest price I ever payed. My wife returned her burned food and our friend could not eat his. I ate half of mine. There were 9 of us on monday eve. after graduation in North Fork, and we were all very hungery. The Chef gave us a 25% off for the next visit. I know they can do better. Tom Owen

I have tried to eat their twice. The first time they were serving dinner to the employees only as a thank you for the work they did getting the place ready. The second time we stopped at 4;15 on a Sunday afternoon. There was a big sign that said open. So we parked and went in. Sorry, the said, we don't open until 5pm. We are going to give more try and if we are turned away again that will be the last time we try. I have seen their menu and their prices are high.
As for the paintings, they were done by the landlords wife.

I've been there twice. The food and service were o. k., but not worth the prices they charge. They have some work to do to become the first class restaurant they claim to be.
You're right about the roses (paintings). Most of them are awful. We have so many really good artists is our area, why not allow some quality art on the walls.

Sandino's is an excellent place to dine. I myself have been there several times and have brought others as well. The food is delicious and the service is great! http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/stretch.gif Being that I have been there on numerous occasions I have been waited on by different servers and they have all been very attentive, professional and friendly. There is always room at any establishment to improve or change things for the better and I believe Sandino's is well on it's way! See you all sometime soon!

I agree with you Cindy. The staff is excellent!!! Every single one of them seem very well trained and polite. I appreciate that when I'm paying a higher price in a nice restaurant. And it is a higher price than I am accustomed to spending, but I went with my sister on Christmas Eve... so it was a nice occasion for a nice restaurant.
They were very busy. We had a reservation but were asked to wait a few minutes before we were seated. This was no problem and I was understanding to the fact that it was the night before a holiday and the place was packed with tourists. We just had a glass of wine in the bar and the table was ready within 5 to 10 minutes. It was actually nice getting a drink at the bar first.
The bar is very nice. I think they have great bartenders and a wide variety of drinks. In fact, they pretty much have it all. I have been there when they gave free shots to the entire bar every hour. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/wow1.gif
Our waitress, Ashley, was great! She was so nice and was dealing with the busy restaurant very well. I think she was the only waitress, in fact. But she handled the job great! We had no problems. The water was filled, she took our order promptly, brought salads out right away... she did it all perfectly.
The food was good. I had the five cheese lasagna. I can't remember what my sister had, but I know they made a substitution for her. The food was hot and delicious.
I gave them a 5 star rating in this poll. They did an excellent job on a very busy evening. I will go back. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/hungry.gif

I have tried a lot of things at the Velvet Rose now and I gotta say that I like the steaks best. I think this place has the best steaks in Oakhurst. The lasagna was also good and I have had the pizza there several times... always good. Service is ALWAYS great there, IMO. I'm sorry some of you didn't have the same experience that I always have.
Give it another try. It's worth it. Oh, and I'm not just saying this since I'm the web deisnger. http://oakhurstforums.com/icon/lol.gif

Meh. Maybe you get good service b/c you are the web designer?
When Nick and I went the service was super slow and the place was packed but only had one waitress! My alfredo sauce tasted like it was from a can, Nick's salmon wasn't cooked all the way and it was way overpriced for what we got. We never had our drinks refilled, and had to prompt the waitress twice for our 10% locals discount.
I'd give it another try, but not for dinner, maybe lunch.

My family had dinner at the Velvel Rose one night. My Dad's and my chicken was nothing to write home about. My husband's spaghetti tasted like "Chef Boyardee" from the can. The prices were too high and I didn't know about any local discount. I still would have felt ripped-off.

I suggest you give Sandino's Velvet Rose another try. They have very good steaks, pizza and lasagna. The place is always packed when I go in there. They have been staying open later. I think they were open until midnight this weekend.

Sandino's Velvet Rose is changing ownership in as soon as two weeks...I have no word yet on if it's staying the same (concept-wise) or if there'll be some big changes.

I hope it is revamped, the food was awful when I ate there. Stouffers lasagna tastes better than the lasagna they fed me.
My guess is that the steakhouse will be next.

I understand that the restaurant is under new management and has improved considerably. I'm told that it is worth another try. We have needed a quality Italian restaurant in or area ever since Andrade's closed. Maybe this is it. I'm keeping good thoughts and plan to try it again soon.

They did change the name. I called and they answered "Amore something" Said it was still Italian and in a few weeks will be adding some Mediterranean dishes. (keeping fingers crossed that it's good)
