I just finished an awesome book about a book club and now I really want to be in one. Thoughts, anyone? Think anyone would like to meet every couple of months or so and discuss books, maybe do a theme potluck?

Kim - What book was it???? I've wanted to do such a thing for a long time. We talked about it previously on the old forums. I'm in! When can we start?
Kim
May 14, 2007, 09:20 AM
To me, as soon as there's more than one person to discuss the book with, the club has begun. The more fun we have, the more people will join. I think that with all of the unique personalities there are in this forum we will have some pretty lively evenings.
How about we start with the book I've just read....we can base the goals we hope to achieve on what we learn from the book. Sheila, I can drop my copy by to you today or tomorrow, or you can come pick it up if you're in Oakhurst. Everyone else, I think you can find it on Amazon, or we can pass this one around and have the first meeting in a month. It's a pretty quick read.

I like the idea of getting together for book talk and a themed potluck.
Messy and I swap books up and down the parkway quite frequently.
I like the Jodi Picoult books.... Kim, you might like the one called "My Sister's Keeper". Its about a young girl with Leukemia and how the family deals with the whole thing.
Kim
May 14, 2007, 09:57 AM
My thought was to rotate members so each one picks a book. We can go by alphabectical order, age...And no holding back. No "everyone will like this one"...I may pick out a book that I know will piss Sheila off just so we can learn some new viewpoints. So, if it's Wolfie's turn to pick a book, she'll post in the forum the name of the book, her reason for choosing it, and where we can get it, be it online or a bookstore. Preferable paperbacks, though, since we all work for a living.
And since we all have computers, whoever can't get out of the house on meeting day can get onto chat and send her opinion live.

excellent Idea Kim! Should we post the book ahead of time, give ppl time to read or start to read the book..... or what?
As for all of us getting a copy of the book... a good option is going to Amazon and buying off of the Used book section. Some great deals can be got there.
Kim
May 14, 2007, 10:10 AM
Oh, it should be posted I would think at least 2 or 3 weeks before the meeting. If we meet every 6 weeks or so at first, that should give everyone plenty of time to read the book.

KEWL! Let's go for it! Any proposed meeting days/times so we can anticipate/kibbitz about what may work best?
Come on by if you get a chance, Kim. I'm home today...working inside/outside. Welcome any excuse for a break but I warn ya - I need a shower - will provide clothespin if ya need one! (GRINS)
What a title! LOL Whatever made ya pick that up and where'd ya find it?
Oh, and I wonder if I should start bein' less opinionated so you don't know what kind of subject matter/view might piss me off! You trying to tell me sumthin'?
Kim
May 14, 2007, 11:01 AM
I'll be over sometime this evening. I think that the book will help us work out the ins and outs of how to do this by itself. The first meeting will on it's own be setting our own ground rules.
Let's have the first meeting in June; I'll look at my calendar and throw out a couple of dates.

Sheila, I drove down to Fresno to the doctor, then back home, then drove Sarah to Madera to her boyfriend's house, then by the time I got to Indian Lakes I was so road-hypnotized I drove right past your turn off and didn't remember I had to turn there until I was pulling into my damn driveway. Will you be home in the morning?

Sunday should be fine. My Dad probably wont come up because he'll be up the following weekend for dance recitals. Anytime is good because school is out.
My dad is up this weekend. He brought me all 3 of Kevin Tredeau's books. I started reading the wieghtloss one last night. very very interesting and a fast read. :read:

food idea for this book review night: wrapped foods.....such as egg rolls.... (symbol of Merit hiding things in her french roll (hair).

Yes...what time? My company should be all gone the night before (their flight is something like 12:01am Sunday, can ya believe????), though if Rob hasn't left yet, he'd be leaving around 2-3-ish Sunday afternoon. At this point I don't even know if Rachel will still be here...trying to convince her the practical thing would be for her to ride back to IL with her father and his gal friend since they intend to drive back and see the Grand Canyon, visit Vegas, etc....and with a vehicle she can pack some stuff that won't hafta be shipped later. But is she listening to me??????????????
As for food, I think we MUST have Bon-Bons, don't you???? And these days I'm craving margaritas like air......{SIGH}

But I am getting ahead of meself.
yes..
bon bons and margaritas!! But I reckon Kim should be allowed to set the menu as she is the host (not hostess).
Kim
May 30, 2007, 09:44 AM
All righty then....Sunday at 4 good for everyone? And yep, as the hostess, I decorate and choose the menu. BTW, the meetings don't always have to be at your house, we could have them over lunch, or over coffee, whatever the host decides.

I am brainstorming on ideas when it comes time for me to host.
And here is an idea.... which came to me when I was looking for another book that I thought would be a good choice... Check your book choice on Amazon.com to check availability of the book.... cos one book I wanted to use was available only for pretty steep prices. Just a silly thought outta my addled brain.

Some discussion points for tomorrow:
!. Who did you love, who did you hate?
2. Who did you want to be?
3. Pick a member of the book club and tell us what you would have done differently in her shoes.
4. Bring a set of "Mule Dam Ground Rules". The unanimous ones will be accepted; the rest will be discussed.
SheilaMae
Jun 16, 2007, 04:11 PM
Kim ---do you want us to bring anything for snacks/drinks?
Also...is the there a 'bus' tomorrow for all us Coarsegold-folk?
Can hardly wait...have told a handful of people I'm in a just getting started book club and seems many are in one already themself and eagerly shares what theirs has read and is doing. It's pretty cool to know many folks are finding books to be a foundation for bonding with others....I mean REALLY, REALLY COOL! When you think about it, sharing what you read with others is almost as intensely personal and intimate intellectually and emotionally as sex is physically.
