When I moved to Oakhurst in 1988, we did not have a problem with theft. Our house was always left unlocked. In fact, I don't think we even carried house keys. Also, keys were always left in the car ignition in our driveway and even in the Raley's parking lot when we went to town (before Vons was built).

When I moved out of this town in 1996, it was still fairly safe to leave doors unlocked and keys in the ignition, but I think people started to get a bit more aware that the town was growing fast and "city people" were moving in.

I moved back to Oakhurst in 2002 and everything had changed. I no longer felt safe leaving my house unlocked and I locked my car. It seems like every week you would hear of several burglaries.

Now it's 2007 and locking your house and car is required! In fact, I am now taking additional steps to secure my belongings. I often read or hear about stolen cars and home invasions. I now have video cameras watching my house, a car alarm, deadbolts locks, window locks and a few other precautions to protect my belongings.

I have never stolen anything in my life. I never would even think of stealing a car or breaking into a home... not even when I was a teenager. I hate thieves and liars. I don't want them around me. I'm glad to hear that this property was recovered and this woman, if guilty, will have to take responsibility for her actions.

It makes me very sad to see the crime levels increase in our mountain community.

I feel the same way Sandman. Like I said before I'm 43 and have been coming up here all my life. My grandparents bought thier property on rd 620 in the late 50's and retired here in the late 60's.

My grandparents never locked thier front door. There was never any crime in town. Plus there was only 1 sheriff in town whom recently passed away.

With city folk moving up here and more teenagers with nothing to do crime has risen. It's such a shame.

I am such a stong believer that parents need to be apart of there kids life. I am so involved with my kids and there life that some people would think i was crazy. my kids can come home and tell me anything. I make sure they are involved with sports and everything in the middle . you have to keep them busy or they will end up walking the streets of oakhurst and coarsegold and getting into trouble. no way I would never let that happen with my kids. I watch them walk the highway 417 and I read in the paper that a house was broken into.. makes me sick. my kids watch kids get in trouble for bringing pot to school and we sit and talk about it. I tell them how does that make you feel about that kid that they know because they have been in school together and it makes them sick and yes they are putting there practice clothes on for either baseball or football or basketball. my youngest son justin his hero and best friend chris rolff is an awesome kid with awesome parents. my daughter kayleigh her hero is Katie Menton and Lauran Rolff. they are awesome kids that just shine. my son cory he is so into playing sports. he love it. my daughter kristina loves to do whatever she can to be apart of her brothers and sister. so we are a close family ..
so yeah get in your kids life and get them to do something they love do it together. i ask everyday how there day is and what is going . i hear alot of drama but at least they are talking to me.
okay i think i am done...hahahahahahaha;)

I really didn't mean that only city kids were the problem, just as I'm sure you didn't mean to imply that city kids were never a problem. I think that those that have lived in this area for a long time are just as interested in preventing crime as the new residents that move from the city. What I was referring to was a general increase in population, most of whom move from the city. There wasn't much of a problem when we were a smaller town. Now that the population is increasing, there is more crime.

I would love to blame boredom, but the kids that broke into my house are local boys that had good paying jobs...well over minimum wage and Family that were more than involved in their lives. These boys were also raised with a good sturdy religious background. They knew right from wrong, were busy and had their own money...but not enough to feed their ever growing drug habits.

Drugs play a huge huge part in the break ins in the area. A lot of people up here don't feel pot is all that big of deal, but when you are a kid and you want it...you're gonna find a way to get it.

I couldn't agree with you more BGW. It is the ever growing drug problem, not where you came from, city folk, or country folk, or even long time Oakhurst folk. Small towns can have drug problems too, ask my husband, raised in Covelo, CA. Where is that? you ask. Exactly, so small no one even has heard of it. They had drug problems too, and even more now, much much more now. Be worried, we all should be...

Also I think that alot of adults contribute and are part of the drug problem..

The burglary on our street involved a MOM who drove the getaway car.

Go figure that !? WE saw her and have yet to catch her..

:surprised:

To have ppl break into your house is an awful feeling. Many of you dislike YLP, but as a community, it is awesome. I live right on the parkway and people know when their neigbhours are home on on holiday. No one is really sticking their noses in each others windows... but you just know when the wrong person is in your neighbours house. You can bet that If I saw a strange person sneaking out of Messy's house... Id be ringing security AND the Sheriff's dept. (and lock and loading) And Messy would do the same... heck, she even knows when there is "eye candy" working near my house..... LOL. So YLP may suck but it's a great community that keeps watch out for one another.

YW--I think I would be calling the S.O. first as I see your YLP Security Guards and the patrol car here in town more often than not.:o Take last night for instance...I saw them at Valero and they headed North after that. I hope there is more than one car on patrol!!

YLP hires Zaks security. They do not keep all of thier trucks in YLP. When they go for maintenance I know they take them to Oakhurst. And yes there is more then 1 truck.

Yup...I stand corrected. I asked my Mom about it and she said the car I see is the old security guard in his private vehicle still painted and dressed up like a 'company' car.

If the vehicle still appears to be a security company car (markings, etc.) that should be reported to the SO. It's against the law for them to drive it around like that if it's not being utilized in the company anymore. Just FYI.
